The fastest way to make a television disappear is to decide whether you need concealment or only camouflage. A folding cabinet or artwork cover hides the screen completely when it is off. Fluted panels, a dark wall, or a decorative frame merely make the black rectangle recede. The four projects below cover both outcomes, from a reversible renter-friendly treatment to furniture surgery and wall-mounted art.

Measure the screen, bezel, mount, power lead, and the clearance needed to open or slide every moving part before buying materials. The examples from published tutorials use specific television sizes, so treat their dimensions as starting points rather than universal plans.
Choose the right kind of disguise first
| Project | What happens when the TV is off? | Reversibility | Work involved | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Converted vintage hutch | Doors fold over the screen for full concealment | Low to moderate; the furniture is altered | Furniture cutting, hinges, mount and cable routing | A bedroom or living room with a suitable cabinet |
| Fluted half-moon panels | Screen remains visible but blends into textured wall decor | High; picture-hanging strips can be removed | Painting and careful alignment | Renters or anyone who owns a frame-style TV |
| Folding canvas-art cover | Four hinged art panels close over the screen | Moderate; the wall support is permanent | Wood frame, canvases, print, hinges and stud mounting | Large TVs where a statement artwork is welcome |
| Decorative wood-trim frame | Screen stays visible, but the TV reads as framed art | High to moderate, depending on attachment | Trim cutting, brackets, caulk and paint | A low-cost visual upgrade with no moving cover |
Homes & Gardens also identifies built-in joinery, sliding doors, mirrors, gallery-wall arrangements, artwork on rails or folding bi-panels, and a dark feature wall as alternatives. These choices sit on the same spectrum: cabinetry and moving art conceal a screen, while a dark backdrop or surrounding gallery reduces its visual weight.

1. Convert a vintage hutch into a closing TV cabinet
A solid hutch gives you the most convincing “TV gone” effect without building a cabinet from scratch. Designer and prop stylist Brady Tolbert adapted one for a bedroom television by turning the existing doors into accordion-folding panels and placing the screen inside.
Materials and tools
- A vintage hutch with enough internal width and depth for the television and mount
- Four hinges for splitting and refitting the doors
- A jigsaw or handsaw
- An articulating TV mount rated for your television’s weight and mounting pattern
- A drill and suitable screws
- An extension cord or an appropriately routed power lead
Build sequence
- Measure the television, including its bezel, and compare those dimensions with the hutch opening. Leave room for the mount to articulate and for the doors to fold without striking the screen.
- Remove the hutch doors and mark a center cut on each one. Cut carefully with a jigsaw or handsaw, then smooth the edges.
- Install hinges so each door’s two halves fold in an accordion pattern. Test the full swing before fitting hardware permanently.
- Attach the articulating mount inside the cabinet. Tolbert cautions that some hutches need an additional piece of wood on the back panel to support the mount: “Depending on your cabinet, you might need to install an extra piece of wood on the back panel to offer some support to the TV mount.”
- Drill a small hole in the rear panel for power and signal cables. Add a grommet or sand the opening smooth so insulation does not rub against a sharp edge.
- Hang the television, check that the mount locks securely, and close the doors slowly while watching for interference.
Where this approach succeeds—and where it does not
The hutch conceals the screen entirely, but it is the least forgiving project. The cabinet must be structurally sound, the mount must be anchored to solid material, and the doors need enough clearance to fold. A shallow or decorative hutch may not safely carry a modern television. Do not rely on a thin back panel if the mount manufacturer requires a thicker substrate; reinforce it first or choose a different cabinet.
Because the television sits inside furniture, check that the set’s ventilation openings are not blocked and that heat can escape when the doors are closed. Keep the mount’s movement within the cabinet’s dimensions rather than forcing the screen against the frame. This is a furniture alteration, so it is a poor choice when you need to return a rental or preserve an antique.

2. Add fluted texture beside a frame-style television
If you want a quick, low-commitment change, flank the screen with painted foam half-moon dowels. Chelsey Brown’s treatment was designed to be temporary and renter-friendly. It adds shadow and rhythm around a frame-style television, but it does not cover the display.
Materials
- Foam half-moon dowels
- Paint and a paintbrush
- Picture-hanging strips
- A level
Installation steps
- Plan the layout on the floor. Decide how many dowels will sit on each side and how far the texture should extend above or below the television.
- Paint the dowels with two coats, allowing them to dry for at least five hours before applying adhesive strips.
- Apply three picture-hanging strips to each dowel, following the strip maker’s surface-preparation and weight instructions.
- Use a level to align the first dowel beside the TV. Place the remaining pieces from that reference line so the fluting stays parallel.
- Press each piece firmly into place, then wait for the adhesive’s recommended set time before disturbing the arrangement.
Expect visual blending, not concealment
The texture breaks up the empty wall around the screen and can make the television feel like part of a composed installation. You will still see the screen whenever it is off. That trade-off is useful when you cannot drill into studs, do not want to alter furniture, or may need to remove the treatment at move-out. Test one strip on an inconspicuous section first, especially on delicate paint or wallpaper, and remove it according to the manufacturer’s method rather than pulling straight outward.
3. Build a folding canvas-art cover
A hinged artwork cover gives you full concealment while allowing the television to remain in its normal wall position. Kate of House Mix built a four-panel frame around a 70-inch TV using paired canvases and a large-format print. Her measurements are project-specific; a different screen requires a new layout.

Published example dimensions and materials
| Part | Dimensions in the 70-inch example | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Long boards | Two at 6 by 66 inches | Top and bottom of the outer frame |
| Short boards | Two at 6 by 42 inches | Outer frame sides |
| Narrow boards | Two at 2 by 64 inches | Internal support pieces |
| Canvases | Eight at 16 by 20 inches | Four folding panel sections, two canvases per section |
| Hardware and finish | Wood box frame, large-format print, spray adhesive, piano hinges and lag bolts | Structure, artwork, folding action and wall attachment |
How to adapt the build to your television
- Record the TV’s overall width and height, not merely the advertised diagonal. Add enough border for the art to overlap the screen without touching it.
- Lay out the four panel sections on the floor. Confirm that their folded width clears nearby walls, shelves, sconces and curtains.
- Assemble the wood box frame and internal supports. Keep the frame square by measuring diagonals before tightening fasteners.
- Bond the print to the canvases with spray adhesive, smoothing from the center outward to avoid bubbles. Follow the adhesive’s ventilation and curing directions.
- Join the canvas sections with piano hinges. Open and close every joint repeatedly before hanging the assembly.
- Locate wall studs and fasten the frame with lag bolts. The wall attachment carries the artwork; do not assume the hinges or canvases can support the assembly by themselves.
- Center the closed art over the television, then open it slowly to verify that the panels do not contact the screen, cables or wall trim.
Why measurement and anchoring matter
This is a substantial cover, so the frame needs a safe path to fold and a wall connection appropriate to its weight. The published 70-inch project is an example, not a standard kit. If your television is smaller, resize every board and canvas relationship rather than trimming one dimension at random. If the wall has metal studs, masonry or no accessible studs at the desired location, use an anchoring method approved for that substrate or have a qualified installer assess it.

4. Make a decorative wood-trim frame
A trim frame is the quickest way to make a standard television look intentional. DIY influencer Laura Burkhalter built one from PVC trim, joined the corners with L-shaped brackets, filled seams with caulk and spray-painted the result. The frame surrounds the screen but leaves it visible.
Build and finish it
- Measure the television’s outer corners and the wall space around it. Size the inside opening so the frame clears the bezel without covering the picture.
- Cut the PVC trim to length and dry-fit the four sides on a flat surface.
- Join the corners with L-shaped brackets. Check that the rectangle remains square by comparing diagonal measurements.
- Caulk visible seams and let the caulk cure according to its label.
- Spray-paint the assembled frame in a finish that relates to the room’s furniture or wall color. Apply light coats in a ventilated area.
- Hang it from scrap-wood brackets, or attach it to the television with suitable Velcro strips if the set and manufacturer allow that method. Keep the frame independent of the screen’s ventilation openings and controls.
Cost and trade-offs
Burkhalter reported spending $20 on her frame in the 2022 Architectural Digest article. That is her reported project cost, not a current typical price; trim, paint and hardware prices vary by location and date. The frame is inexpensive and visually effective, but it cannot hide the display. Choose it when your goal is to turn the television into a deliberate architectural element rather than make it disappear.

Sliding framed art: an additional concealment pattern
A sliding system can cover a television without hinges projecting into the room. Amy Ehmann’s Minted tutorial uses two framed artworks on drawer slides to cover a 46-inch flat-screen TV. The example uses two 24-inch drawer slides, a 2-by-2 pine support board, screws, framed art and felt pads.
- Measure the television and choose artwork large enough to cover it when the panels meet. Include the extra width of both frames in the open position.
- Fasten the support plank to wall studs, keeping it level.
- Install the two drawer slides to the support and attach the framed-art carriers. The slides move the art; they are not intended to carry the television.
- Add felt pads where frames meet or approach the wall, then test the full travel before placing the television behind the artwork.
The 46-inch screen and 24-inch slides belong only to that tutorial’s example. A wider TV, heavier frames or a different wall may require another slide length, additional support or a different mechanism.
How to decide among concealment, camouflage and built-ins
Choose full concealment when the screen should vanish
Pick the hutch, folding canvas cover or sliding art when you do not want a black rectangle visible at all. These options require accurate measurements, a reliable support structure and enough room for panels or doors to move. They also add weight and mechanical parts that need periodic adjustment.

Choose blending when reversibility matters most
Fluted panels, a decorative trim frame, a gallery wall or a dark feature wall change the TV’s context without moving it. They are generally easier to undo than cabinetry and can work in rented homes. A dark wall reduces contrast around a black screen, but it does not block reflections or hide the image.
Consider permanent joinery for a remodel
Built-in cabinetry and sliding doors provide the cleanest integrated result when you are already renovating. Plan the cavity, ventilation, power, signal access and service clearance before the wall is closed. Mirror fronts can conceal a screen when it is off, although reflections and viewing-angle compromises are possible, as TV CoverUps notes in its FAQ.
Installation checks that prevent expensive mistakes
- Measure the real object: Include bezel, stand or mount, cable bends and the widest point of any moving cover.
- Verify structure: Mounts, art frames and cabinet reinforcements must connect to material rated for the load. Locate studs where the plan calls for them.
- Preserve ventilation: Do not seal vents inside a tight cabinet or press decorative parts against them.
- Protect cables: Drill smooth, appropriately sized pass-throughs and leave enough slack for an articulating mount without pinching wires.
- Test movement unloaded: Open doors, hinges or slides repeatedly before the television is in place.
- Plan viewing and lighting: Mirrors and glossy art can reflect windows or lamps; check the sightline from every main seat.
- Respect adhesive limits: Picture strips and Velcro have surface, curing and weight limits. They are not substitutes for structural mounting when an assembly is heavy.
What professional lift systems cost
For a concealed television that rises from cabinetry or drops from a ceiling, a vendor FAQ from TV CoverUps gives a stated lift-system range of $4,000 to $8,000. The FAQ is undated and was accessed in 2026; the figure is a vendor’s range, not an independently verified market estimate. A motorized lift also introduces electrical work, service access and moving-part maintenance, so it belongs in a different budget and planning category than the four hand-built projects above.

For complete concealment, use a reinforced hutch, folding canvas cover or sliding framed art. For a faster and more reversible change, flank the TV with fluted panels or build a simple trim frame. In every case, size the project to the actual television, anchor heavy parts to suitable structure and test clearances before the screen goes in.
