A high f-stop means a small aperture: it lets in less light and generally keeps a deeper range of the scene acceptably sharp. Use one when you want more foreground-to-background detail, but balance that added depth of field against the slower shutter speed or higher ISO the reduced light may require—and the fine-detail softness that can appear at very small apertures.

What a high f-stop means

Aperture is the opening in a lens diaphragm that lets light reach the camera sensor. It is expressed as an f-number, such as f/2.8, f/5.6, f/8 or f/11. The numbering can feel backwards at first: a higher f-number describes a smaller opening, while a lower one describes a larger opening. Nikon’s Understanding Maximum Aperture guide puts it simply: “The higher the f/stop—the smaller the aperture—the greater the depth of field.”

Because a smaller opening passes less light, a high f-stop is not a way to make a photograph brighter. It changes both how much of the scene appears in focus and how much light reaches the sensor.

How aperture changes the in-focus range

Depth of field is the zone in front of and behind the point of focus that appears acceptably sharp. A narrower aperture generally increases this zone; a wider aperture generally makes it shallower. That makes a high f-stop useful when you want a broader stretch of a scene to look sharp, while a low f-stop can help isolate a subject against a softer background. Sony’s aperture guide explains the relationship between aperture, light and depth of field.

Aperture is not the only factor. Camera-to-subject distance and focal length also affect depth of field. Moving closer to a subject can make the in-focus zone shallower; increasing the distance can deepen it at the same aperture. Sony’s depth-of-field guide describes these factors.

When to choose a high f-stop

Landscapes and broad scenes

If your goal is to render more of a landscape acceptably sharp, try stopping down. Nikon gives f/8 and f/11 as example choices for landscape depth of field. They are starting points, not universal rules: the right aperture depends on your lens, camera position, focal length and the scene’s focus needs.

Portraits and selective focus

If you want a portrait subject to stand out from a less-detailed background, a wider aperture can help create a shallower depth of field. Nikon gives f/2.8 as an example of a lower setting for selective-focus portraiture. The result still depends on factors such as subject distance and focal length.

Account for the light and movement

A smaller aperture reduces the light reaching the sensor. To maintain exposure, you may need a slower shutter speed, a higher ISO, or a combination of the two. Sony Canada’s exposure guide explains how aperture, shutter speed and ISO work together.

A slower shutter speed can make handheld camera movement more visible and can blur a moving subject. If the subject is still, a tripod may help keep the camera steady during a longer exposure; it will not freeze movement within the scene. If the subject is moving, consider whether a higher ISO is preferable to letting the shutter speed fall too low.

Why stopping down too far can soften detail

Stopping down can increase depth of field and may reduce some lens aberrations, but very small apertures introduce diffraction, which can soften fine detail. The point where that softness becomes noticeable varies with the camera and lens, including sensor pixel size, so there is no single best aperture for every setup.

Nikon’s diffraction explanation reports f/8 as the highest-resolution setting in its example using a particular camera-and-lens combination. That result applies to that setup, not to every camera. Nikon also notes that stopping down too far can soften images from high-pixel-count cameras in its guide to capturing high-resolution images.

A simple way to find a useful aperture

  1. Choose a static scene and keep your framing and focus point consistent.
  2. Photograph it at several apertures, including a lower and a higher f-number.
  3. Adjust shutter speed or ISO as needed to maintain exposure, and note those changes.
  4. Compare the in-focus range and fine detail by magnifying playback. Nikon recommends checking playback to assess depth of field.

Choose the aperture that gives you enough depth of field without sacrificing more light or fine-detail sharpness than the scene warrants. If a static shot requires a long exposure, a tripod can steady the camera, though not the subject.
