HMG Paints donated decorative paint to YES Manchester for the renovation of the charity’s original centre in Newton Heath. Local volunteers helped repaint the community space, using shades chosen to make it feel calmer and more welcoming while preserving colour and character.
What paint was used at the YES centre?
The project used two shades from HMG Paints’ Essential Colour Collection: Brook, a soft powder blue inspired by the brook at the company’s historic Collyhurst site, and Irk Valley, a green-grey inspired by the River Irk. The Painting and Decorating Association’s report, published 6 October 2026, describes how the products were used:
- Contract Matt Emulsion: applied as an obliteration coat over the existing bright pink walls.
- Vinyl Matt emulsion: applied to the walls and ceiling as the visible finish coat.
The account does not specify which shade was used on each surface, how much paint was donated, or the project’s cost. It also provides no comparative figures for coverage, durability, finish performance or environmental impact, so the project should not be treated as a product test or ranking.
How the renovation came together
YES approached HMG Paints for support with the centre renovation, and HMG donated paint from its decorative range. Volunteers helped carry out the work. The stated aim was to create “a more calming and inviting environment while retaining a strong sense of colour and character.”

Alyssia Thorburn of HMG Paints said: “HMG Paints is proud to have played a part in supporting YES, helping to create a brighter, more welcoming space where individuals can continue to develop their skills, build confidence and work towards achieving their ambitions.” These are statements about the project’s purpose; the report does not provide measured outcomes for wellbeing, service access or employment.

What YES Manchester does
The Painting and Decorating Association describes YES as an employment and skills charity supporting communities across North Manchester and Greater Manchester. It works with unemployed and under-employed people, offering one-to-one support from qualified advisers, digital skills sessions and courses with partner organisations. The aim is to help people pursue employment, volunteering and learning opportunities. The report says YES has supported the community for more than 10 years.
The report describes the centre as “a place where people come for support, confidence, connection, opportunities and a sense of belonging.” That wording reflects the organisation’s description of the venue, not independent evidence of outcomes from the repaint.

What the project does—and does not—show
This is a local renovation account, not an assessment of paint performance or a quantified charity-impact report. It records a donated paint contribution, the named shades and products, and volunteer involvement. It does not state the donation’s volume or value, or establish that the refresh changed service use, confidence, employment or other social outcomes.
