Holi colors are the powders and colored water used during Holi, the spring festival commonly celebrated in March. The powder is called gulal. Its ingredients vary: some colors use plant-based materials, while synthetic gulal often uses a cornstarch base and dyes. A “natural” or “herbal” label alone does not tell you exactly what is in a particular package.
What are Holi colors and gulal?
Holi is a spring festival observed on the last full moon of a Hindu lunisolar month, usually in March. The Gregorian date changes each year. The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, describes celebrations that include Holika Dahan on the eve of Holi, followed by the playful use of colored powder, or gulal, and colored water. Traditions associated with the festival include stories of Prahlada and Holika and of Radha and Krishna; communities may emphasize these traditions differently. The ministry lists 4 March 2026 as the date for that year, not as a date that applies to other years. Check a reliable calendar for the relevant year and location. Ministry of Tourism: Holi.
What are Holi colors made of?
There is no single recipe for commercial gulal. Poison Control says traditional gulal was made from natural sources and that synthetic gulal is often made with a cornstarch base and FD&C-grade dyes. Making vivid natural blues and greens can be more difficult or costly, so colors sold for Holi can differ in both ingredients and formulation.
Some reports describe powders made from or contaminated with metals, industrial pigments, talc, asbestos, mica granules, or ground glass. That is not evidence that every powder contains these materials; it is a reason to pay attention to ingredient disclosure and seller information rather than assuming all products are alike. Poison Control also describes reported eye injuries, skin irritation and itching, possible toxicity if an unknown product is swallowed, and a risk that some powders can ignite or explode near flames. These are documented hazards, not inevitable results of ordinary Holi play. Poison Control: Are Holi colors safe?

What “herbal” or “natural” can—and cannot—tell you
Herbal dry colors are a documented product category. The Government of India’s India Science, Technology & Innovation portal lists Herbal Dry Colours (Herbal Holi Gulal) and Herbal Colours for Rangoli, developed by CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute. This establishes that such a product category has been developed; it does not certify every item currently sold as herbal.
ICAR describes plant-based color preparations using ground neem leaves and spinach for green, and turmeric for yellow and red. These examples show possible plant inputs, not the formula of any particular retail package. Look for ingredients that are actually named instead of treating a broad marketing claim as proof of composition. How to choose Holi colors
Available sources do not establish an independent testing standard or certify individual brands. Use the product information you can verify when comparing options:
- Ingredient disclosure: Check whether the ingredients and dyes are identified rather than described only with a broad claim.
- Seller information: Buy from a reputable source that provides usable product details. Poison Control’s prevention guidance says, “Only purchase Holi colors from reputable sources.”
- Claims: Treat “natural” and “herbal” as claims to check against the listed ingredients, not as a guarantee about composition or safety.
- Intended use and handling: Read the package directions and consider whether the product is meant for dry-powder play, water-based play, or another use.
- Form and color preference: Decide whether you want dry gulal or colored water, and choose based on the disclosed formulation and the way you plan to use it.
No individual brand can be ranked from these general sources, and a label or seller description cannot establish the contents of every package.

How to reduce exposure while playing
Poison Control recommends practical precautions that reduce contact but do not make play risk-free:
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses or protective goggles, and avoid wearing contact lenses.
- Wear a close-fitting mask over your nose and mouth to limit inhalation of powder.
- Cover exposed skin with clothing, including your arms and legs.
- Keep powder away from your mouth and eyes, and keep it away from flames.
What to do if Holi color gets in your eyes, on your skin, or in your lungs
Eye exposure
Rinse the eye immediately for 15 minutes with water at a comfortable temperature and pressure. Seek medical care promptly for severe or persistent pain, changes in vision, or sensitivity to light.
