Homemade Knitting Machine: Designs, Parts, and Realistic Capabilities

Homemade circular knitting machines are feasible, but each open design has its own needle count, materials, mechanism and manual workflow. Compare documented projects before buying parts.

Yes, you can build a homemade circular knitting machine, but it is not a single standard design. Open projects differ in needle count, fabric size, drive system, fabrication accuracy and how much work the operator must do. Choose a documented design first, then source its exact files and parts; do not assume that components from one project will fit another.

What a homemade knitting machine actually is

A circular knitting machine arranges needles around a ring. A rotating assembly carries yarn around those needles while the needles rise and fall to form stitches. Ben Everard describes one 3D-printed design this way: “The rotator spins, winding the yarn around the needles, and pushing the needles up and down within the stator.” Read the full explanation in Raspberry Pi Official Magazine.

That description applies to the particular mechanism discussed there, not every homemade machine. The Idda project compares different hobby-machine mechanisms, including latch and bearded needles. A hand-built peg loom or knitting spool is a simpler device and should not be confused with a rotating-needle circular machine.

Choose a design before buying parts

Open hardware projects are not interchangeable kits. Compare their intended output, needle mechanism, fabrication method and documentation before ordering anything.

Project Published capabilities or specifications Fabrication and operating notes
Circular Knitic Open circular knitting machine project; the repository supplies build files and links to an Instructables manual and project documentation. Uses 3D-printed components plus laser-cut sheet stock. The creators emphasize print precision. The repository records five machines knitting during an eight-month exhibition; that is a project history, not a controlled reliability or speed test.
FashionTec Circle Knitting Printable design offered with 22 or 46 needles. The project reports circular and rectangular swatches; its 46-needle version lists a maximum swatch width of 17.75 inches. Cast-on, bind-off and forwarding are performed manually according to the project description. The width is a stated design specification, not an independent measurement.
Idda Open development project for a 3D-printable circular machine. Includes engineering notes on needle mechanisms and a teardown of a purchased machine. Its observations are intended to be representative, not a survey of every commercial or homemade machine.

Parts and fabrication: what one build may require

There is no universal bill of materials. Circular Knitic’s repository specifies 5 mm and 6 mm plexiglass for laser-cut parts and provides 3D-print files. A separate 2017 Fab Academy build log using Circular Knitic files describes high-quality prints, wood framing, 60 needles, a NEMA 23 stepper motor, motor driver, Arduino Uno, 14 bearings and other hardware. That account says wood could substitute for maker beams in that build and also reports local sourcing problems.

Treat both lists as examples tied to those builds. Before purchasing, use the selected project’s current repository files and bill of materials. Depending on the design, you may need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • an FDM printer and a design-compatible filament; the reviewed projects do not establish one universally correct plastic, brand or print setting;
  • laser-cut plexiglass or another specified sheet material;
  • needles matching the project’s geometry, plus bearings, shafts and frame stock;
  • a hand crank or the specified motor, driver and controller;
  • fasteners and alignment hardware.

Print accuracy matters. Mis-sized holes, warped rings or rough needle channels can prevent the rotor and needles from moving freely, so follow the project’s tolerances rather than treating the files as rough illustrations.

How the knitting cycle works

  1. Load the needles and yarn. Follow the selected project’s threading and needle-position instructions.
  2. Cast on. Some open designs require the operator to form the initial stitches by hand.
  3. Rotate the mechanism. The rotor carries yarn around the needle circle while cams or shaped tracks move needles through the stitch cycle.
  4. Advance the fabric. Forwarding may be manual; it is not automatically handled by every homemade design.
  5. Bind off. Finish the final stitches by hand when the project specifies manual bind-off.

The FashionTec 22/46-needle design explicitly documents manual cast-on, forwarding and bind-off. Those tasks are project-specific requirements, so a homemade machine should not be presented as a push-button replacement for hand setup.

What fabric can it make?

Needle count and spacing limit the fabric dimensions. The FashionTec project reports both circular and rectangular swatches and gives 17.75 inches as the maximum swatch width for its 46-needle version. A different needle arrangement will produce different dimensions and fabric behavior.

Gauge is also design-specific. For conventional domestic machines, the Knitting & Crochet Guild describes fine (3.5/3.6 mm), standard (4.5 mm), mid-gauge (6/7 mm) and chunky (9 mm) categories, each associated with different yarn ranges. Do not apply those categories automatically to an unrelated homemade mechanism. The Guild also warns that putting thicker yarn on alternate needles narrows fabric and can cause needle-hook problems.

Check the chosen project for its needle type, spacing and recommended yarn. A conventional accessory that fits one model may not fit another; the Guild specifically cautions that machine accessories are not universally compatible. Homemade needle channels and latch clearances can differ even more.

A practical comparison checklist

Score candidate projects against the constraints of your workshop and the fabric you want:

  • Needle count and dimensions: What circumference or flat width does the design document?
  • Output shape: Is it circular only, or does it document rectangular panels as well?
  • Manual work: Which steps require cast-on, forwarding, tension adjustment or bind-off by hand?
  • Fabrication access: Can you make accurate prints and obtain the specified laser-cut parts?
  • Component availability: Are the exact needles, bearings, motor and electronics available where you live?
  • Documentation quality: Are there current STL files, assembly drawings, wiring information and an assembled-build record?
  • Drive choice: Do you want a hand-operated mechanism or the project’s specified motorized drive?

A sensible build sequence

  1. Select one repository. Download its current files, read the assembly instructions and list every non-printed component.
  2. Confirm tools and tolerances. Verify printer build volume, calibration, sheet-cutting access and the ability to make clean holes and bearing seats.
  3. Prototype critical interfaces. Print small test pieces for needle fit, rotor clearance and bearing alignment before committing to a full frame.
  4. Fabricate and inspect parts. Remove print artifacts, check that needles slide without binding and confirm that the rotor runs concentrically.
  5. Assemble without yarn first. Turn the mechanism slowly by hand, checking that every needle follows its intended path and that no fastener enters the moving envelope.
  6. Add the drive system specified by the design. If using a motor, follow that project’s electrical diagram and controller settings rather than mixing unverified electronics from another build.
  7. Test with scrap yarn. Practice cast-on, several rotations, manual forwarding and bind-off before attempting a finished garment.

What the evidence does—and does not—show

The available project accounts demonstrate that these machines can be built and can produce knitted samples. They do not provide a standardized comparison of cost, speed, durability, noise or stitch quality, and they do not establish universal safety specifications. Circular Knitic’s report of five machines operating during an eight-month exhibition is an account from the project creators, not a benchmark.

Plan for iteration: sourcing may be difficult, printed tolerances may require adjustment, and a design that works in one workshop may need different frame material or hardware elsewhere. Keep fingers, hair and loose clothing away from rotating parts, disconnect power before clearing a jam, and use guards or covers where the design permits.

Bottom line for a first build

For the clearest starting point, choose a project with downloadable files, an assembly record and a parts list that matches your fabrication access. Circular Knitic is a documented 3D-print-and-laser-cut route; FashionTec offers a 22- or 46-needle printable concept with explicitly manual operations; Idda is useful when you want to study mechanism choices. Build to one design’s specifications, validate alignment before adding yarn, and describe the resulting machine by its documented needle count and capabilities—not by assumptions about homemade machines in general.
