The cabinet trend designers say is returning to 2026 kitchens is honey oak: warm-toned wood with visible grain. The modern take is less about recreating a glossy look and more about letting the oak’s character show through a matte or satin finish. That’s a qualitative design observation, not evidence of a measured industry-wide comeback.
What is the cabinet trend making a comeback?
It’s honey oak cabinetry and accents. After a period when white tones predominated, Peggy Haddad, founder of Peggy Haddad Interiors, says designers are seeing warmer oaks return, especially when the grain is visible and the tone feels sun-warmed. Her comment describes what she is noticing; it does not establish how common honey oak is across the market.
Oak’s appeal is partly its distinctive grain. Rebecca Mahoney, principal designer at Robinwood Kitchens, describes oak as versatile and durable enough for everyday wear. The design direction also extends beyond kitchens to built-ins and other cabinetry.

Choose a less glossy finish

Use the wood selectively
Haddad says she uses honey oak in moderation. If you like its warmth but don’t want it to dominate, consider it for a limited run of cabinetry, an island, or a built-in rather than every surface. Those are ways to apply the restrained approach, not a prescribed layout.
How can you update existing honey oak cabinets?
Keeping the cabinets and refreshing the surrounding details is a practical alternative to replacing them. Haddad recommends updating hardware, lighting, and counters to make existing cabinets feel intentional and current.
