A hot dog is a cooked and/or smoked sausage, usually made from beef, pork, poultry, or a combination. In the U.S., USDA guidance says to refrigerate them promptly; people at increased risk from listeriosis should reheat them until steaming hot, and whole hot dogs should be cut safely for children under four.
What is a hot dog made of?
Under U.S. federal standards, “hot dog,” “frankfurter,” and “wiener” refer to cooked and/or smoked sausages. They are made from comminuted meat—that is, meat reduced to small particles—and may use beef, pork, turkey, chicken, or a combination. The package label states which species the product contains. Recipes and ingredients vary, so check the label rather than assuming every hot dog has the same composition.
Ingredients and nutrition depend on the particular product and serving size. When comparing packages, use the same serving-size basis and check calories, sodium, saturated fat, protein, meat species, and the ingredient list. USDA FoodData Central also lets you inspect records for selected foods, but a generic figure should not be treated as representative of all hot dogs.

Packaged hot dogs are fully cooked, so cooking them again is not generally required for people who are not in a higher-risk group. However, ready-to-eat foods, including hot dogs, can carry Listeria monocytogenes, which can grow slowly at refrigerator temperatures. USDA FSIS advises pregnant people, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems to reheat hot dogs until steaming hot before eating.

For grilling fully cooked meats such as hot dogs when reheating, USDA FSIS advises heating to 165°F (74°C) or until steaming hot. Use a food thermometer rather than relying on appearance alone. Because a hot dog is thin, insert the probe from the side so its sensing area reaches the center. See USDA FSIS guidance on hot dogs and food safety and its grilling and food safety guidance.
How long do hot dogs last in the refrigerator?
USDA says to refrigerate or freeze hot dogs promptly after purchase. If the package has no date, its recommended refrigerator limits are two weeks for an unopened package and one week after opening. For best quality, USDA says to freeze hot dogs for one or two months.

Do not leave hot dogs at room temperature for more than two hours, or more than one hour when the temperature is above 90°F. Product dates such as “sell-by,” “use-by,” and “best if used by” are generally not safety dates; follow safe storage practices regardless. How should you cut a hot dog for a young child?
USDA identifies whole hot dogs and other round foods as choking hazards for children younger than four. Before serving, cut the hot dog lengthwise or into very small pieces. If it has a casing, remove the casing before cutting it into pieces. Supervise children while they eat.

Where did hot dogs come from?
Hot dogs are linked to German sausage traditions, but the origin of the hot dog in a bun and the origin of the name remain disputed. The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council recounts several parts of this history, drawing on food historian Bruce Kraig, but it is an industry council rather than an independent historical archive. Its account is best treated as a history narrative, not proof of a single inventor or definitive naming story. The council describes its establishment by the American Meat Institute in 1994 on its hot dog history page and about page.
