To reduce the risk of heat damage when setting down a hot pot, pan, or serving dish, place a properly sized trivet or hot pad between the cookware and the counter or table. Choose one using the heat limit and care instructions for that exact product, and use extra caution on delicate surfaces: a manufacturer’s temperature rating does not guarantee complete protection in every situation.
What a trivet can—and cannot—do
A trivet or hot pad creates a barrier between hot cookware and the surface beneath it. Manufacturers describe their products as suitable for setting down hot pots, pans, or serving dishes, but those descriptions do not establish that any particular trivet will prevent damage on every countertop or table material under every condition.

Surface material matters. Joseph Joseph warns that its Spot-On trivets may not provide total heat insulation on vulnerable surfaces, including natural, polished, or lacquered wood, plastic table coverings, and cork-backed mats. Le Creuset UK likewise warns that its French Trivet will not provide total heat insulation on delicate surfaces. If the surface is especially vulnerable, follow both the cookware and trivet instructions and consider a more protective placement rather than relying on the rating alone.

How to compare a hot pad or trivet
- Check the exact model’s heat limit. Published ratings differ by product and are manufacturer specifications, not interchangeable ratings for all silicone trivets.
- Check coverage. The trivet should support the cookware base; compare its dimensions with the item you plan to set on it.
- Read surface cautions. Look for warnings about delicate materials or incomplete insulation.
- Follow cleaning directions. Dishwasher-safe claims apply to the named products below; check the care instructions for any other item.
- Check heat-source restrictions. A trivet meant to hold cookware is not automatically suitable for use on a burner, flame, or other direct heat source.

Use the trivet as directed
- Read the instructions for the specific trivet, including its heat limit, surface warnings, cleaning directions, and restrictions on direct heat.
- Place it on a stable, dry area of the counter or table before setting cookware down.
- Check that the trivet supports the cookware base rather than leaving part of it overhanging.
- Set the cookware on the trivet without shifting it across the surface, and use additional care if the counter or table is delicate or covered with plastic or another vulnerable material.
- Clean and store the trivet according to its manufacturer’s care instructions.
What the ratings do not establish
The cited product pages provide manufacturer specifications and cautions. They do not establish a universal maximum temperature for hot-pad protection or independently compare performance across countertop materials. Treat each rating as a claim for its named product, not as proof that the trivet will prevent damage in every setting.
