A residence a few steps from Place des Vosges in Paris’s Marais now reads as a deliberate collision of eras: exposed stone and ceiling beams remain from the historic shell, while mirror, stainless steel, chrome, marble, mahogany, and crocodile-embossed leather supply a sharply contemporary finish. Architectural Digest’s February 7, 2026 feature describes the property as a 14th-century building made from two structures that were later joined. Architect, designer, and artistic director Jérémy Chaillou organized the interior around that join rather than hiding it.

The project in one sentence
Chaillou, founder of the multidisciplinary firm Chaille, turned the seam between two formerly separate buildings into the apartment’s visual spine. It runs from the kitchen through the dining and living areas toward a fireplace, with a mirrored step announcing the change in level and the change in architectural history. Instead of disguising the old masonry, the design lets it sit beside polished, reflective interventions.

What is known about the Paris residence
Architectural Digest places the residence near Place des Vosges in the Marais and calls the building 14th-century. That age and the account of the buildings being joined are descriptions reported by the feature, not an independently documented historical survey. The article does not provide construction dates for individual rooms, a measured floor area, or a restoration chronology.
Chaillou describes the client as bold and confident and says those qualities informed the design. That is the designer’s characterization; it does not establish anything further about the client’s identity or lifestyle. The feature’s “bachelor pad” framing belongs to the project’s presentation, while the documented design decisions are the materials, circulation, and furniture described below.
The join between two buildings becomes the plan
Most renovations try to make an awkward junction disappear. Here, the junction is the organizing axis. Chaillou explains the challenge directly:

“There were originally two separate buildings that were later joined together. It was one of the main challenges of the space,” says architect, designer, and artistic director Jérémy Chaillou, founder of the multidisciplinary firm Chaille.
The route begins in the kitchen, crosses the dining and living spaces, and terminates visually at a fireplace. A mirrored step marks the threshold. Because the step is reflective, it does more than solve a change in floor height: it catches fragments of the rooms on either side and makes the transition legible from multiple viewpoints.
Chaillou summarizes the perspective strategy this way:

That approach explains why the apartment’s strongest elements are aligned rather than isolated. The mirror is not merely a decorative panel, and the marble is not limited to a single wet room; both participate in a sequence that makes the combined buildings feel like one continuously unfolding interior.
Historic fabric is kept visible
Existing stone walls and exposed ceiling beams remain in view. Their roughness gives the polished finishes something to oppose, so the apartment does not become a showroom of uniformly smooth surfaces. Lime-washed surfaces soften parts of the envelope, while the original masonry supplies tonal variation that manufactured materials cannot replicate.
Chaillou calls this relationship an intentional clash rather than a compromise:
“I like this idea of creating anachronisms between this old building and my contemporary interventions,” the designer says.

In practical visual terms, the old fabric acts as a counterweight. A mirror can double whatever is in front of it; a stone wall refuses that kind of visual repetition. The beams establish a horizontal rhythm overhead, while stainless steel and chrome introduce precise lines below. The tension is what keeps the scheme from reading as either a museum-like restoration or a generic modern apartment.

Kitchen: reflective surfaces across two levels
The kitchen concentrates the project’s hard, reflective language. Its cabinets are brushed stainless steel, the backsplash is Avocatus marble, and a mirror adds another layer of reflection. Brushing the steel matters: the surface reflects light without behaving like a single, uninterrupted sheet of chrome.
The kitchen floor crosses two levels, making the building’s inherited complexity physically apparent. Rather than flattening that difference, the design allows it to participate in the route toward the dining and living rooms. The mirror and marble pick up changing views as someone moves between the levels, so the room is experienced as part of the apartment’s axis rather than as a self-contained work zone.
Why the kitchen does not feel purely industrial
- Avocatus marble introduces natural veining and a distinct geological pattern against the regularity of steel cabinetry.
- The mirror extends the room visually, but the retained stone and beam structure keep the reflection tied to the historic shell.
- The level change prevents the stainless-steel composition from reading as a standard, flat-wall kitchen installation.
Living and dining: upholstery supplies the warmth
The living area includes the Rotondo sofa by The Socialite Family, upholstered in garnet cowhide with crocodile embossing by Espace Cuirs JCA. The deep red-brown tone links the seating to the bedroom’s red mahogany and satin textiles, while the embossed surface adds tactile pattern without introducing a new color family.
The dining table is custom mahogany and aluminum, designed by Tom Ducarouge. Leather and stainless-steel chairs by Axel Chay continue the conversation between warm and reflective materials. Ducarouge is also credited with a pendant light, giving the dining setting a coordinated overhead element without requiring every piece to come from one collection.
Three metal stools in the living room are identified by the feature as being from Zara Home. That identification is part of the article’s room description; the feature does not establish current availability or a price.
The mirrored threshold as furniture-scale architecture
The mirrored step between the formerly separate buildings is especially effective beside the dining furniture. A table and chairs occupy the human scale, while the step records the larger architectural condition. The reflection allows the threshold to be seen from the room rather than only encountered underfoot, turning circulation into a design event.

The bedroom: red lacquer, satin, leather, and chrome
The primary suite is small and L-shaped, so its impact comes from concentrated material decisions rather than expansive proportions. Wood paneling wraps the walls. The bed and its built-in-storage headboard are made from red-stained, high-gloss-varnished mahogany, creating a continuous, furniture-like mass.

Red satin sheets and a dark-red crocodile-embossed leather bedspread intensify the monochromatic treatment. The leather echoes the crocodile embossing on the living-room sofa, but the bedroom uses it in a more enveloping and intimate way. Glossy mahogany, satin, and leather each catch light differently: the varnish gives a hard sheen, satin produces a soft glow, and the embossed bedspread breaks the surface with relief.
A full-length mirror is outlined with smooth chrome tubes. The feature does not identify it as a retail model, so it is more accurate to describe the chrome detail than to assign a product name. For anyone seeking a similar visual effect, “full-length chrome mirror” is a useful design-search phrase, but an off-the-shelf item found under that description should not be presented as the mirror used in this residence.
How the small suite avoids visual clutter
- The L-shaped plan gives the bed and storage a clear built-in zone rather than scattering freestanding pieces.
- One dominant red family unifies the mahogany, sheets, and leather instead of competing with them.
- The chrome-tube mirror supplies a slim vertical accent, preserving floor area while reflecting the saturated finishes.
Bathroom: lime plaster and Emperador marble
The bathroom changes the texture of the palette without abandoning its material intensity. Lime plaster finishes the walls, giving them a matte, mineral surface. Emperador marble is used for the floor, baseboards, shower, shelves, and sink, so the stone appears as a continuous architectural system rather than a small vanity accent.
The broad use of Emperador marble also demonstrates how the project handles pattern. In the kitchen, Avocatus marble appears as a backsplash against brushed steel. In the bathroom, Emperador extends across multiple planes and fixtures, making the room feel carved from one material family. Victorian accents in some lighting and bathroom fixtures add historical references, but they are inserted into a room otherwise defined by lime plaster and marble.

Lime-washed surfaces versus lime plaster
The feature describes lime-washed surfaces elsewhere in the residence and lime plaster in the bathroom. Those terms should not be collapsed into one finish. Limewash is a coating that leaves a translucent, often softly varied appearance on a substrate; lime plaster is a wall finish with its own build and texture. In this project, that distinction helps the bathroom read as more enveloping and tactile than the reflective kitchen.

How the hard and soft materials are balanced
The project’s most useful lesson is not that chrome or marble makes a room luxurious. It is that every reflective or dense material is paired with something that changes its temperature. Stainless steel is set against marble and old stone. Mirror sits beside lime-washed surfaces and timber. Chrome outlines a mirror, while mahogany, satin, and leather occupy the bedroom around it.
The warm side of the palette is also deliberately edited. The red family appears in the garnet sofa upholstery, the stained mahogany, the satin sheets, and the dark-red bedspread. Because the colors relate, the rooms feel connected even when their finishes differ. The embossed leather adds pattern without introducing a separate decorative motif.
A practical sequence for borrowing the approach
- Identify the room’s existing irregularity. A level change, exposed beam, masonry wall, or awkward junction can become the organizing feature instead of being concealed.
- Choose one reflective anchor. Use a mirror, polished metal, or stone on the main sightline so it participates in circulation rather than functioning as an isolated accent.
- Add a warm structural material. Timber, leather, or another substantial natural material should occupy enough volume to counter the reflection.
- Repeat a color, not every finish. The Paris residence repeats deep red while varying mahogany, satin, and embossed leather; copying every surface would make the composition heavy.
- Reserve ornate references for precise points. Victorian lighting and bathroom fixtures provide historical punctuation without turning the apartment into a period replica.
Objects, art, and the limits of what is identified
The feature names art, ceramics, lamps, and antique objects by makers including William Guillon, Alexandre Veillon, and Violaine d’Harcourt, among others. Those pieces are presented as part of the interior’s collected atmosphere, but the article does not provide a complete inventory, prices, or purchase links. The central architectural elements are similarly specific in description but not always tied to retail products: the chrome-outlined bedroom mirror, for example, has no identified model.
That distinction matters when translating the look. The documented design is a case study in relationships—historic masonry against contemporary surfaces, a continuous axis through a split plan, and repeated red with varied textures. It is not a shopping list with verified current stock.
Why the apartment feels coherent despite its contrasts
Three decisions hold the project together. First, the old-to-new relationship is repeated in every major room, so the contrast is structural rather than decorative. Second, the circulation path gives the materials a sequence: steel and mirror begin the route, furniture and leather occupy its social center, and the fireplace provides a visual destination. Third, the designer limits the color story. Garnet, red mahogany, and dark red recur, while limestone, marble, stainless steel, and chrome supply variations in reflectivity and texture.
The effect is an interior that acknowledges its complicated origin without allowing the plan to feel unresolved. Chaillou’s stated interest in blurring points of reference is visible in the mirrors and level changes, but the retained beams, stone, and lime-based finishes keep the viewer oriented in a real, materially legible building.
The defining takeaway
According to Architectural Digest’s February 7, 2026 feature, this residence near Place des Vosges succeeds by making its history active. The reported 14th-century shell and the later joining of two buildings are not background facts hidden behind a new finish; they dictate the axis, the threshold, and the view through the rooms. Chrome, marble, mirror, and embossed leather then sharpen that framework, while mahogany, limestone, lime plaster, and exposed stone keep it grounded. The design is memorable because the contemporary interventions do not erase the old building—they make the building’s contradictions the subject of the interior.
