A cramped kitchen, competing floor finishes and dark surfaces were making this small Vermont retreat work harder than it should. The 2021 renovation improved circulation first, then used white paint, plaster, walnut and the home’s original mahogany trim to create a brighter contemporary mountain interior without erasing its 1970s identity.
The Quechee, Vermont, house profiled in Architectural Digest’s 2023 feature is a useful case study in renovating a compact period home. Jess Klein, a Boston-based interior designer, and her husband bought the three-bedroom, two-bath getaway in 2017. After several years of family weekends spent skiing and hiking, they renovated it in 2021.

The successful move was not simply making the rooms look newer. Klein changed how the kitchen, dining area and living room functioned, then selected finishes that acknowledged the house’s original materials. The result is contemporary, but the white walls, plaster fireplace, exposed wood storage and reeded walnut island still relate to the original mahogany trim and the midcentury-modern character Klein says these Acorn Deck House homes were meant to express.
The project at a glance
| Item | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Location | Quechee, Vermont |
| Home | 1973, three bedrooms and two bathrooms |
| Size | 750 square feet, as reported by Architectural Digest in 2023 |
| Purchase | The owners bought the home in 2017 |
| Renovation | Completed in 2021 after use as a family ski-and-hiking retreat |
| Initial budget | $100,000, stated in the 2023 feature for this project |
| Final bill | Around $140,000, with no itemized explanation of the difference in the article |
| Design aim | Restore a midcentury-modern spirit while making the small home brighter and more functional |
Those figures describe one renovation, not a typical cost for a Vermont home or a benchmark for a 750-square-foot project. Labor, structural work, location, finish level and the condition of an existing house can change a budget dramatically.

Why the layout had to change before the finishes
The old kitchen restricted movement
The former kitchen had a small island positioned in a way that blocked circulation. Its relationship to the dining room also limited how many people could work in the kitchen at the same time. In a vacation house used by a family and guests, that bottleneck affects everyday tasks as much as it affects parties: one person preparing food can make it difficult for another to pass through or help.
The renovation expanded and reoriented the work zone
Klein’s plan expanded the kitchen and turned the island so the main passage could flow more naturally. The change is functional rather than decorative. A larger, correctly oriented island provides work surface and seating without forcing people to move through the busiest part of the kitchen.

Dining moved into the living room
Instead of treating the existing dining footprint as fixed, the plan moved the dining area into part of the living room. That reallocation gave the kitchen a better working relationship with the rest of the house and made entertaining less segmented. It also allowed the living area to be arranged around the home’s tall ceiling and fireplace rather than around an awkward circulation path.
How the palette reconnects the house to its 1970s character
Original mahogany became the reference point
The door and window trim is original mahogany. Klein explained that earlier updates had not embraced the home’s intended style, so the owners wanted to bring that character back. Rather than paint over the trim, the renovation repeated its warmth in new wood elements, especially the reeded walnut island and exposed wood storage.

The article identifies Acorn Deck House as the builder and presents the midcentury-modern interpretation as Klein’s and the article’s account of the home’s design intent. It does not provide independent architectural-history documentation or name an architect, so that attribution should remain specific to the project feature.
White walls make the ceiling and woodwork legible
The walls are painted Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore. Klein said the owners wanted a bright white that did not read too yellow or too blue. In a compact room with tall ceilings and substantial wood trim, a neutral-leaning white can reflect daylight without competing with the mahogany. The important lesson is not that one white works in every house; it is that the undertone was chosen in relation to the existing wood and the available light.
Dark finishes were replaced with lighter, coherent surfaces
The living and dining areas previously combined carpet with faux-wood flooring, while dark finishes made the tall-ceilinged space feel smaller. The renovation replaced that visual patchwork with Villa Bella’s Villa Borghese Collection Challans smoked French oak engineered planks. The smoked oak keeps a natural wood presence, but the continuous floor helps the connected rooms read as one larger volume.
A plaster fireplace adds a matte, tactile surface. Exposed wood storage supplies warmth without requiring every wall to be dark. Together, those choices keep the room from becoming an all-white interior while allowing daylight to do more work.

Materials and products named in the renovation
The following details are the products reported in the 2023 feature. They are not confirmation of current specifications, stock, prices or finish availability. The custom cabinetry, island and dining table should be understood as made-to-order work rather than products with guaranteed retail equivalents.

|---|---|---|
| Wall paint | Chantilly Lace by Benjamin Moore | Bright white selected to avoid an overly yellow or blue cast |
| Flooring | Villa Bella Villa Borghese Collection Challans smoked French oak engineered planks | Unifies the living and dining areas after mixed carpet and faux-wood flooring |

Furniture that supports a small, social floor plan
The furniture list reinforces the decision to make one connected space rather than a series of formal rooms. A Burke Decor Union Saddle counter stool serves the island. In the living room, the named pieces include a West Elm Hunter Shaped Wood stacking chair, an Urban three-piece L-shaped sectional and a Maddox coffee table. A custom Vermont Farm Table walnut dining table anchors the relocated dining area, while a Room & Board Otis swivel chair adds a movable seat. Storage comes from the Crate & Barrel by Leanne Ford Annie charcoal storage cabinet.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeveral of these pieces can be moved, stacked or reconfigured, which matters in a 750-square-foot retreat. A sectional defines the living zone without requiring a wall; a swivel chair can face the fireplace, the sliders or a conversation; and stacking chairs can be added when guests arrive. The walnut dining table and reeded island also prevent the white walls from making the interior feel visually cold.
What the renovation teaches about painting a period getaway
1. Test white against the permanent woodwork
Paint samples should be viewed beside the mahogany trim at morning, afternoon and evening. A white that looks neutral on a store card may pick up a warm or cool cast from adjacent wood, artificial light or reflected greenery. Use large sample boards rather than judging a small swatch on a wall, and leave the boards in place through the day before committing.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
2. Prepare old walls before chasing a crisp finish
- Clean walls to remove cooking residue, dust and smoke film, especially near the former kitchen.
- Repair dents, nail holes and failed caulk, then sand repairs so they do not telegraph through the new color.
- Spot-prime patched areas and any glossy or stained surfaces with a compatible primer.
- Protect the original mahogany with careful masking and a sharp cut line rather than trying to paint quickly against it.
- Apply the finish in the sheen recommended for the room and the selected paint system, maintaining a wet edge to reduce lap marks.
3. Let one white serve the architecture, not erase it
In this house, the white walls provide brightness while the trim, flooring, fireplace and walnut carry the visual identity. If every surface were painted white, the renovation would lose the contrast that makes the original wood meaningful. A contemporary refresh can therefore mean simplifying the background while preserving selected historic or original elements.
4. Coordinate undertones across connected rooms
When a living room, dining area and kitchen share sightlines, compare the wall color, floor sample, stone sample and wood samples together. The goal is not identical color temperature everywhere; it is avoiding accidental conflicts, such as a blue-leaning white beside a strongly orange wood or a gray floor that makes warm cabinetry look muddy.

Layout choices to consider in a similar renovation
The Vermont project is a single-home case study, not a test of competing plans. For another small house, compare options by circulation and simultaneous users before selecting finishes.
| Layout question | Option A | Option B | Decision test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Island orientation | Island parallel to the main run | Island turned to open the passage | Can two people pass while one cooks? |
| Dining location | Keep dining in its original footprint | Move dining into part of the living room | Which arrangement gives the kitchen a clearer work zone and the living room a useful seating plan? |
| Wood treatment | Paint existing trim | Keep trim and repeat its tone in new wood | Does the existing wood contribute character worth preserving? |
| Floor strategy | Separate flooring by room | Use one continuous floor through connected spaces | Will transitions clarify zones or make a small plan feel chopped up? |
Understanding the $100,000-to-$140,000 difference
Architectural Digest reports a stated $100,000 budget and a final bill of around $140,000. The feature does not provide an itemized reconciliation, so it cannot establish whether the difference came from scope changes, labor, material substitutions, site conditions, fees or other factors. It should not be used as a universal percentage overrun.

For your own project, record an initial scope and a running committed-cost schedule. Separate allowances for cabinetry, appliances, flooring, paint, electrical work and labor from confirmed contracts. Keep a contingency that reflects the age and condition of the house, and document every change order. That process will tell you why your number moves instead of leaving the final total unexplained.
What is and is not established about the named products
The article identifies the faucet as a Delta Trinsic single-handle pull-down model and says it came from a previous project. It does not verify the current model number, finish options, specifications or availability. The same limitation applies to the listed appliances, lighting, flooring and furniture. Check manufacturers and retailers directly for current dimensions, certifications, lead times and finishes before specifying anything.
Galloway Fine Furniture is named for the custom cabinetry and reeded walnut island, and the dining table is described as a custom Vermont Farm Table piece. Their inclusion demonstrates the role of local or made-to-order work in the design; it does not establish that an identical item can be purchased today.
The central idea to take from the Quechee house
Klein’s own description captures the lived result: “I love the kitchen,” she said. “My favorite thing to do is to wake up and watch the sunrise through the sliders. It’s the best setting for making coffee. And it’s the best setting for entertaining. The space brings joy.” That outcome came from aligning the plan with how the owners actually use the retreat, then choosing paint and materials that make the original architecture visible.
For a 1970s getaway of your own, start with the blocked path, the underused room and the material worth saving. Once those decisions are clear, a carefully tested white, continuous flooring, tactile plaster and selective new wood can deliver a clean contemporary interior without flattening the house’s history.
