How a 212-Square-Foot Dallas Kitchen Made Green, Wood, and Reuse Work

A Dallas kitchen renovation shows how salvaged Shaker cabinets, deep green paint, wood, plaster, soapstone, and a larger island can transform an open room without replacing every appliance.

A 212-square-foot kitchen in Dallas’s Midway Hollow neighborhood became warmer and more practical without replacing every cabinet or appliance. The homeowners and their design team reused the existing Shaker cabinetry, painted it Sherwin-Williams Laurel Woods, enlarged the island, and balanced the green with wood, plaster, and soapstone. The result addressed a specific spatial problem—the original island looked miniature in the open room—while creating the organic, inviting atmosphere the family wanted.

The project was led by Urbanology Designs and MHM Living and documented by Kelly Dawson with photography by Nathan Schroder for Architectural Digest on December 14, 2022. It is a single-project case study, not a cost survey or independently inspected construction report.

Why the original kitchen needed more than a color change

The existing room functioned, but its visual balance was wrong for the open floor plan. Song described the starting palette as dominated by white and gray, with extensive cabinetry that felt flat and overwhelming. The island, meanwhile, looked too small for the surrounding room. Her brief was unusually clear: retain what worked, bring in more warmth and personality, and create “a much bigger island.”

That distinction matters when planning a renovation. A room can have serviceable cabinets and appliances yet still fail because the scale, circulation, or material mix does not fit the architecture. In this kitchen, the island—not appliance performance—was the main spatial mismatch. The redesign therefore invested in proportion and finish rather than automatically buying a complete new kitchen.

Reuse became the central design decision

Salvaging the cabinet boxes

The team kept the existing Shaker cabinetry instead of demolishing it all. Painting the cabinets Sherwin-Williams Laurel Woods changed the room’s character while preserving a functional storage system. The project also used replacement Shaker doors, allowing the familiar profile to remain while giving the fronts a refreshed, consistent appearance.

Reuse is not simply a budget tactic. Keeping sound cabinet boxes can reduce demolition, disposal, and the amount of new material required. It also lets a design team spend its effort where the room needs it most—here, the larger island, new surfaces, lighting, and the hood solution. Cabinets should still be evaluated for water damage, sagging shelves, failing hinges, and awkward internal layouts before a reuse plan is approved. The Dallas feature establishes that this team salvaged the cabinetry; it does not claim that every existing cabinet is a candidate for repainting.

Retaining the appliances

The original appliances stayed, specifically to help control costs. That choice avoided turning a visual renovation into a full equipment replacement and kept the budget focused on the elements that changed the room’s experience. Appliance retention works best when dimensions, ventilation, electrical service, and finish are already compatible with the new layout. If an appliance is near the end of its service life or forces an inefficient cabinet plan, keeping it may create a false economy; the Dallas project offers a successful example of retention, not a universal rule.

How green, wood, plaster, and soapstone create warmth

Laurel Woods supplied the deep green anchor. Green cabinetry can feel heavy when every surrounding surface is equally dark, so the design introduced natural and tactile counterpoints: visible wood, plaster, and soapstone. The combination gives the eye different textures and light responses instead of one uninterrupted field of painted millwork.

The palette is material-led rather than dependent on a single accent color. Painted fronts provide the saturated tone; wood adds grain and visual warmth; plaster contributes a softer, hand-worked surface; and soapstone grounds the work areas with a dark, honed character. The source does not identify a specific soapstone product or plaster system, so those details should not be inferred when specifying a similar room.

Hardware and lighting reinforce the layered approach. The feature names Devol Kitchen hardware and an Arteriors chandelier, along with Rejuvenation and Brizo fixtures, but does not publish exact models. For a comparable project, treat those references as style cues and verify dimensions, finishes, lead times, and compatibility before ordering.

The oversized island solved the room’s scale problem

Song singled out the island as the feature she loved most, saying, “I’m obsessed with the oversized island and its butcher-block cutting board.” The island was not enlarged merely to add a fashionable centerpiece. It was sized to read correctly within the open room and to support the family’s daily routines: hydrating, snacking, preparing meals, eating, and cooking.

An island redesign should begin with clearances, not a maximum possible footprint. Mark the proposed perimeter with painter’s tape, then test door swings, appliance openings, walk paths, and seating. A larger top is useful only when people can pass one another safely and drawers can open without blocking a primary route. The Dallas account confirms that the original island looked miniature and that a substantially larger one met the brief; it does not publish the island’s exact dimensions or circulation clearances.

The butcher-block cutting board is another practical layer. The homeowner praised an oversized version, but no brand or model is identified. A category-level search for an oversized butcher-block cutting board can locate similar products; measure the island, account for lifting weight, and decide whether the board will be stored, displayed, or used in place.

The hood required hidden structural work

The planned hood vent route encountered load-bearing beams. Rather than accept an exposed workaround or compromise the hood’s exterior discharge, the team worked in the attic, protected the structural route, and created a new opening so the hood could vent outdoors. Song said the team maintained attic functionality and beam safety while avoiding visible patch-ups.

This is a project-specific reported solution, not a construction prescription. Load-bearing framing, duct sizing, fire stopping, roof or wall penetrations, and local code requirements must be assessed for the individual house by qualified professionals. A decorative hood can look straightforward from the kitchen while requiring substantial work above the ceiling. Confirm the route before cabinetry and plaster are finalized, and document how any framing is supported and how insulation and attic access will be restored.

Budget and schedule: what the published account actually establishes

Song recalled an initial budget of about $150,000. Architectural Digest reports that the final cost exceeded that estimate and attributes the overrun to supply disruptions around the war in Ukraine. No final bill, line-item breakdown, or general renovation-cost benchmark is provided.

The homeowner said work began in May and finished in August, and described the process as lasting 10 weeks. The quoted account does not state the year for those months, so the schedule should be read as the project’s recollection rather than a dated industry standard. Material availability, permitting, structural discoveries, and custom fabrication can change a kitchen timeline substantially.

Song also described the communication experience positively: “If something went awry, 99% of the time it was handled magnificently by our design team before the problem even came to me,” she says. She added, “They communicated so beautifully that I didn’t have to break a sweat the entire 10 weeks.” The “99%” is her personal estimate, not a measured renovation statistic.

A practical way to apply the Dallas lessons

1. Audit what can stay

  • Inspect cabinet boxes for moisture damage, movement, and structural weakness.
  • Check whether the existing layout can support the desired island and circulation.
  • Test every appliance for performance, age, dimensions, and service access.
  • Separate functional problems from appearance problems before pricing demolition.

2. Define the one spatial change that matters most

Write the problem in measurable terms: an island that is too short, insufficient prep surface, blocked circulation, or poor seating. Tape the proposed footprint on the floor and live with it during several daily routines. This prevents a larger island from becoming an obstacle.

3. Build a material hierarchy

Choose one dominant finish—in this case, green painted cabinetry—then assign supporting roles to wood, plaster, stone, metal, and lighting. Request physical samples and view them in morning, afternoon, and evening light. A deep green that looks balanced beside warm wood may read much darker beside cool white counters.

4. Resolve ventilation and structure early

Trace the hood duct from the appliance location to the exterior before ordering the hood or closing ceilings. Have the route reviewed for framing conflicts, duct performance, access, and code compliance. If beams interfere, redesign the path with a qualified contractor or engineer rather than cutting or drilling structural members casually.

5. Protect the contingency

Use the initial budget as an estimate, not a guarantee. Keep a written allowance for freight delays, substitutions, concealed conditions, and price changes. The Dallas feature’s higher final cost shows why a visually ambitious renovation needs room for uncertainty, even when cabinets and appliances are reused.

Common mistakes when copying the look

  • Choosing green before checking light: Deep paint can shift dramatically across a day. Sample the actual color on cabinet-size boards.
  • Making the island large without testing clearances: The goal is usable scale, not the largest top that fits.
  • Assuming reused cabinets need only paint: Door replacement, hinge alignment, drawer repairs, and internal modifications can affect the scope.
  • Ordering decorative hardware before confirming dimensions: Pull spacing and projection must suit the door and nearby walkways.
  • Leaving the hood route until the end: Structural conflicts are harder and more expensive to solve after finishes are installed.
  • Treating a case-study budget as a quote: The reported $150,000 was an initial, project-specific estimate, and the final amount was higher.

Why the finished room works for the family

The redesign joined appearance and routine. Song said the kitchen is a hub where the family hydrates, snacks, prepares every meal, eats, and cooks, with the children helping make breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. In her words, it became “warmer and cozier by this remodel.” The larger island supports that activity, while the green-and-wood palette gives the open room a stronger identity than the former white-and-gray scheme.

She summarized the experience as, “I can’t stress enough how fun and easy this was for me.” That statement describes her experience with the project team, not a promise that kitchen renovation is effortless for every homeowner. The transferable idea is more concrete: identify the room’s true mismatch, reuse what remains sound, and spend design and construction effort on the changes that improve both scale and daily use.
