A 300-square-foot Paris apartment can feel like a complete home when its design works with the structure instead of fighting it. In this Pigalle renovation, architect Aliénor Louédin kept a two-foot-thick load-bearing wall, organized circulation around it, gave the larger room to a lounge-bedroom, and used repeated half-arches, beige paint and concealed storage to make a very small plan feel coherent. The actual budget was not published, but the project shows where a tight renovation can put its effort: planning, paint, adaptable furniture and a few carefully chosen details rather than extensive bespoke cabinetry.
Architectural Digest’s February 8, 2025 feature documents the apartment in Paris’s Pigalle neighborhood. It was the first real-estate purchase of a young owner who wanted a proper home for hosting, not merely a crash pad. Louédin, founding architect of Inaugure Studio, redesigned the apartment as a compact suite with distinct sleeping, cooking, bathing, dressing and entertaining functions.

The load-bearing wall became the design spine
The most consequential constraint was a load-bearing wall approximately two feet thick. Removing it was not an option. Instead of disguising the wall or treating it as dead space, Louédin made it the organizing element of the renovation.
Small kitchen shelves begin the visual sequence. A run of panels then wraps around the thick wall and continues toward the lounge-bedroom. Louédin described the gesture as unfolding the project “like fabric.” The panels create a pleated, softened reading of a wall that could otherwise feel heavy and abrupt, while a small passage remains between the two rooms.

Function, not room labels, determines the zoning
The larger 172-square-foot room is the lounge-bedroom because it has to support the apartment’s most varied activity. A sleeping alcove sits within that room, while the bed can also act as seating when the owner hosts a larger group. The smaller 129-square-foot area contains the kitchen and bathroom, concentrating the service functions together.
This arrangement separates activities without creating a maze of tiny enclosed rooms. The passage through the structural wall provides a direct connection between the two zones. For a small home, that kind of clear route matters more than preserving a conventional “bedroom” and “living room” distinction.
The plan also matches the owner’s actual life. Louédin said, “My client entertains and hosts dinners. She needed a true adult apartment.” The result is not described as a basic student flat, despite the title’s student-budget framing. It is a compact home designed for both everyday use and guests.

Half-arches make separate functions feel related
Louédin repeated the bathroom’s half-arch shape elsewhere in the apartment, including niches and the sleeping area. The motif gives the square rooms a shared visual language and softens their angular geometry.
Repetition is especially valuable when a small home has several functions competing for attention. A curved opening, niche or painted shape can signal that the kitchen, passage and sleeping area belong to one composition rather than looking like unrelated interventions. The article does not provide construction drawings or dimensions for the arches, so their exact radius and build-up should not be copied as if they were a standard specification.
For a lower-cost interpretation, the same idea can be achieved with paint: outline a shallow arch over a niche, headboard or doorway, then keep the surrounding surfaces in related tones. A painted arch is not the same intervention as a built one, but it can create continuity without adding joinery.
What the beige palette accomplishes
The apartment’s palette revolves around three shades of beige from Farrow & Ball. The feature does not name the shades, sheen levels or locations, so no exact color match can be verified from the published information.

- A middle tone can define the lounge-bedroom without introducing a hard boundary.
- A deeper or warmer tone can give a niche, arch or service area enough contrast to read as intentional.
Those are planning principles, not a claim about which shade went on which wall in the photographed apartment. If you are adapting the approach, test large sample areas under morning, afternoon and artificial light. Beige changes noticeably with the color of daylight, flooring and nearby fabrics; a small card is not enough to judge the final effect.

Use the same undertone throughout the connected spaces. A pink-beige beside a green-beige can make a narrow passage look patched together, while three related warm neutrals can make separate functions feel like one volume. Keep the finish information honest: the feature confirms the three-beige palette but does not identify the products’ finishes.
The bed is both bedroom furniture and host seating

It also allows the storage zone to remain accessible while making the sleeping area look calmer. For a durable result, mount the track securely, allow enough fullness for the fabric to close without gaps, and keep the hem clear of the floor if the passage is heavily used. A washable, tightly woven fabric is generally easier to maintain than a delicate textile in a dressing area.
What “student budget” does—and does not—tell you

- Give the largest volume to the most changeable use. Here, the larger room combines lounging, sleeping and entertaining. Your priorities may differ, but the principle is to allocate floor area by frequency and flexibility rather than by traditional room names.
- Repeat one shape or proportion. A half-arch, a consistent shelf depth or a repeated vertical panel can make several small interventions read as one system.
- Plan storage to disappear when possible. A curtain, flush-front cabinet or niche can reduce visual noise without sacrificing access. Check clearances before ordering hardware.
- Select a narrow paint family. Three related neutrals can establish zones without making a small plan feel chopped into color blocks. Test them in the actual light and against the floor.

Choose sheen for maintenance, not only appearance
Living areas and passage walls usually need a finish that can tolerate gentle cleaning.
