A 560-square-foot apartment in Barcelona’s Gràcia neighborhood was reorganized from six small rooms into one connected home for cooking, dining, entertaining, relaxing, sleeping, and working. Architects Isabel Francoy and Anna Enrich, who also owns the apartment, worked with decorators César Carcaboso and Josep Vicens to remove the internal partitions while preserving the early-1900s building’s brick walls and steel-beamed, tile-vaulted ceilings.

The renovation’s defining move is a single curved partition around the bathroom. It replaces a maze of doors with a continuous spatial sequence, while a deliberate mix of cement, stainless steel, mirror, and glass is softened by fabrics, wood, and ceramics. The result looks back to Barcelona design of the 1990s and early 2000s without treating the apartment as a period set.

Why the six-room layout had to change
The pre-renovation apartment was described as labyrinthine. Six separate rooms can provide clear boundaries, but in a home of only 560 square feet, every partition also consumes circulation space and interrupts daylight and sightlines. The owner wanted the apartment to support several modes of daily life rather than force each activity into a tiny, single-purpose box.
Enrich summarized the brief this way: “I wanted to turn this labyrinthine apartment into a great space for cooking, entertaining friends, relaxing, and working.” That list is important because it combines social, domestic, and professional needs. The project was not simply an attempt to make the apartment look larger; it was a re-planning exercise intended to let one compact footprint accommodate overlapping activities.
From six rooms to a connected sequence
Removing internal partitions
The designers removed the apartment’s internal partitions and re-established the major functions as a flowing sequence. The resulting home contains a kitchen, dining area, living room, study, bedroom, and bathroom, but those functions are no longer presented as six isolated compartments. Movement and views connect them.

Open planning does not mean that every activity is visually identical. Furniture, changes in use, and the bathroom’s curved enclosure can still suggest where one zone ends and another begins. The distinction is made through placement and geometry rather than a corridor lined with doors.
Using the bathroom wall as the organizer
Instead of rebuilding a collection of straight partitions, the project creates one curved partition around the bathroom. This wall is the apartment’s organizing gesture: it gives the bathroom privacy, directs circulation, and links the surrounding spaces with a softer edge.
A curved enclosure also changes how a small room is experienced. A straight wall can create a hard stop at the end of a narrow route; a curve guides the eye and allows adjacent areas to read as parts of one composition. The source identifies the partition as a design feature, not as a measured efficiency experiment, so its effect should be understood architecturally rather than as a quantified space-saving claim.

Keeping the early-1900s Barcelona shell visible
The renovation did not erase the building’s age. Brick walls remain, as do steel beams and tile-vaulted ceilings. Those elements provide texture, structure, and historical continuity above the new open plan.
Retaining the shell creates a productive contrast with the intervention. The original masonry and vaulting carry the building’s physical memory, while the curved partition and contemporary fixtures make the apartment work for its current occupant. The old fabric is therefore not a decorative backdrop added after the planning decisions; it is one of the materials that makes the new arrangement legible.
For anyone studying the project as a renovation model, the lesson is to decide early which inherited elements carry identity. Once those features are protected, new work can be more deliberate: partitions, finishes, lighting, and furniture do not have to imitate the old building because the authentic structure is already present.
How the material palette balances cool and warm
Reflective and mineral surfaces
The scheme brings together cement, stainless steel, mirror, and glass. These materials have a cool, reflective, or mineral character. They can bounce light, sharpen edges, and reinforce the apartment’s 1990s reference without requiring ornamental decoration.
Softening with tactile materials
Warm fabrics, wood, and ceramic objects counter that hardness. Fabrics introduce softness and acoustic absorption; wood adds visual warmth; ceramics contribute hand-scaled texture. The contrast prevents the reflective surfaces from making the compact home feel clinical.

What “1990s-inspired” means in this project
The reference is specifically to a golden period of Barcelona design in the 1990s and early 2000s. Enrich described the ambition as wanting to “pay tribute to a golden age of Barcelona design with all the comforts and technologies of today.” That wording frames the decade as a source of attitude and material language, not as a demand to reproduce every period detail.
Carcaboso and Vicens said the project is “strongly inspired by its location in the city and the life of its owner.” They also connected Enrich’s perspective to a peak moment in Barcelona’s history and to the architectural revolution that followed the city’s opening to the world with the 1992 Olympic Games. In the apartment, that historical reference is filtered through present-day routines: working at home, cooking for friends, relaxing, and using contemporary technology.
This distinction helps avoid a common problem with nostalgic interiors. A literal period recreation can make a small home feel like a set. Here, the period influence is paired with a current plan and the owner’s actual requirements.
Objects that reinforce the concept
The feature names several objects used in the apartment: a Santa & Cole Duo lamp, a Santa & Cole Tatu lamp, a Turbina Studio Masa 02 stool, and a round stainless-steel wash basin. These references show how the design language continues from the architecture into the furnishings and bathroom.
The lamps and stool are identified as objects in the completed interior, but the source does not establish their current availability, dimensions, price, or exact specifications beyond their names. The wash basin is described by its round stainless-steel form; no exact make or model is given. A similar fixture could therefore be described generally as a round stainless-steel vessel sink, not as the installed product.
How each zone works in the open plan
Kitchen and dining area
Cooking and eating are treated as part of the apartment’s social center rather than hidden utility functions. The open arrangement allows food preparation to remain connected to conversation and to the living area, matching Enrich’s goal of entertaining friends.

Living room
The living area benefits from the long visual relationships created by removing partitions. It can remain a place to relax while still connected to the kitchen, dining area, and circulation around the bathroom wall.

A study is included without requiring a separate enclosed office. In a compact home, the value of an open study is flexibility: it can support focused work and still belong to the larger daily sequence when the workday ends.
Bedroom
The bedroom remains one of the apartment’s named functions, but the project’s description emphasizes connection rather than a detailed privacy system. The curved bathroom enclosure and furniture placement provide the available transitions within the overall open-plan strategy.
Bathroom
The bathroom is the one function given a dedicated architectural volume. Its curved surrounding partition makes privacy possible while also acting as the link between the other spaces. The round stainless-steel basin continues the project’s reflective material vocabulary.

The Tool Desk

List cooking, eating, hosting, relaxing, sleeping, and working. Then identify which activities need acoustic or visual separation and which can share a zone.
- Remove partitions selectively. An open plan is useful when walls block circulation or daylight, but a bathroom or bedroom may still need a defined enclosure. The project keeps one strong partition instead of rebuilding many small rooms.
- Choose one organizing geometry. A curved wall, a structural bay, or another continuous element can guide movement and give a compact plan a clear identity.
- Protect meaningful historic fabric. Brick, beams, and vaulted ceilings can carry more character than newly applied decoration. Establish what stays before selecting finishes.
- Balance surface temperatures. Pair mineral or reflective materials with wood, textiles, and ceramics so the interior has both precision and softness.
- Use period references as filters, not rules. Select forms, lighting, or finishes that recall the chosen era, then test them against current technology, storage, maintenance, and daily routines.
- Check sightlines from every work zone. In an open home, the kitchen, desk, seating, and bed are seen together. Confirm that lighting, clutter control, and furniture heights work as one composition.
Painting and finish implications
The published description does not identify paint colors, brands, sheen levels, or a room-by-room color schedule. It does establish a material conversation that painters and finish designers can use as a guide: cement, steel, mirror, and glass supply cool visual notes, while wood, fabrics, and ceramics supply warmth.

That means a paint specification for a similar apartment should be developed around the actual masonry, daylight, and reflective surfaces rather than copied from an assumed 1990s palette. Sample colors beside retained brick and under both daylight and evening lighting. Use sheen intentionally, because glossy paint near mirror or stainless steel can multiply reflections, while a quieter finish can keep the composition from becoming visually busy.
Historic brick and tile-vaulted ceilings also require condition checks before coating. Their texture may be part of the design story, so painting them should be a conscious choice rather than an automatic step. The Barcelona project’s documented approach is to retain those elements, not to report a particular paint treatment.
What the published account does not establish
The feature gives no project cost, construction duration, energy measurement, furniture budget, or independently measured increase in usable space. It also does not provide a post-occupancy study or a comparative test against another floor plan. Claims about efficiency, value, or performance should therefore remain qualitative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLikewise, the named lamps, stool, and basin are evidence of objects shown in this apartment, not a current buying guide. Availability, retailer listings, and prices can change and would require separate verification.
Why the renovation works as a case study
The project succeeds as an example because its decisions align: the open plan answers the owner’s mixed domestic and work needs; the curved bathroom partition gives the plan a memorable center; the retained shell anchors the renovation in Gràcia’s older architecture; and the material palette keeps reflective 1990s references from overwhelming a small home.
Its most useful takeaway is not that every 560-square-foot apartment should copy a curved wall or stainless-steel basin. It is that a compact renovation can combine historic continuity, strong geometry, and contemporary use when each decision is tied to how the resident actually lives.
