City Kids Education Centre in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, replaces the usual classroom-lined corridor with a bright interior courtyard. Six preschool rooms open onto that shared hub, where double doors, interior windows, play sinks and bathrooms create visual and physical links between spaces. The arrangement is the project’s defining idea: children get a common place to gather, while caregivers retain sightlines into rooms and washroom areas.

Designed by BAAO and completed in 2021, the two-story center contains 11,000 square feet. Its architecture also includes child-height storage, built-in furniture, specialist after-school rooms, acoustic felt and pandemic-era ventilation and check-in measures. Those are documented design features, not proof of better learning, quieter rooms or lower infection rates; neither the architectural descriptions nor the 2021 feature provides measured post-occupancy results.

City Kids Education Centre is an early-childhood facility in Williamsburg organized around a central indoor courtyard rather than a long hallway. BAAO’s 2021 project description lists 11,000 square feet, six preschool classrooms and a 2021 completion date. The organization’s current facility description likewise identifies a two-story, 11,000-square-foot learning center: six first-floor classrooms serve children ages two through five, while learning labs upstairs serve school-age children.

Those descriptions refer to the same building at different points in time. Azure Magazine’s feature, published November 10, 2021, presents the architectural idea and the pandemic-period adjustments. The current City Kids page describes how the facility is used now, so it should not be read as a second, independent evaluation of the design.

Why the courtyard changes the plan
In a conventional daycare, rooms often line up along a circulation spine. People move through a hallway to reach each classroom, and the hallway can become the primary shared space by default. At City Kids, the six preschool rooms face a bright interior courtyard. The courtyard is both a gathering room and the circulation center, so the shared space is visible from the classroom thresholds rather than hidden behind corridor walls.
Azure describes classroom doors opening toward this central area. Double doors make the connection wider when rooms need to open up, while interior windows pull daylight deeper into the plan. Shared bathrooms and play sinks sit between or near classrooms, creating practical links without requiring every child to cross the entire building for routine tasks.
A thickened wall at the courtyard incorporates the reception desk and storage cubbies. Lockers wrap the courtyard volume in a city-skyline motif, turning an otherwise functional edge into a recognizable interior landmark. This combination of circulation, storage and reception concentrates several everyday operations at the center instead of scattering them along a hallway.
What children and adults encounter
- Classroom doors face a common indoor court rather than a narrow passage.
- Interior windows provide borrowed daylight and visual links between rooms and shared areas.
- Double doors can connect a classroom more directly to the court when activities expand.
- Shared washrooms and play sinks support adjacent rooms.
- Reception and cubbies are built into the courtyard wall, making arrival functions part of the central route.
The plan therefore changes movement as much as appearance. A child leaving a room enters a recognizable common place; an adult moving between rooms can read activity through openings and windows. The descriptions do not establish how often the courtyard is used, how many children occupy it at once or whether the arrangement improved attendance or learning.

Visibility without eliminating privacy
Early-childhood rooms need supervision, but constant exposure is not the same as good oversight. City Kids uses several degrees of openness rather than one fully transparent wall. Interior windows let caregivers see into neighboring areas and bring daylight through the plan. Door openings and shared spaces provide additional lines of sight.
The washroom area uses half-height walls. Azure characterizes these partitions as a compromise: children receive some visual privacy while caretakers can still monitor the space from above the wall line. That is a design description, not a claim that every sightline is unobstructed or that the arrangement meets a particular licensing standard. Licensing, safeguarding and accessibility requirements must still be checked against the rules in force where a facility is built.
A useful supervision test
For anyone studying the plan, the important question is not whether every surface is glass. It is whether an adult can move through normal duties while retaining the sightlines needed for safety. A practical review would map views from teaching positions, doorways, the courtyard, washrooms and arrival areas. It would also test what happens when doors are closed, furniture is moved or several groups use the court simultaneously. The published project material does not include such a sightline study.
Spaces beyond the preschool rooms
The building is not limited to six identical classrooms. Project descriptions identify specialist after-school rooms for cooking, theatre, STEM and movement. A lounge with bleacher seating provides a stepped gathering place, suitable in concept for presentations, group meetings or watching an activity. The current facility page refers to upstairs learning labs for school-age children, which is consistent with a program that changes after the preschool day.
Separating specialist rooms from the preschool classrooms can protect the regular rooms from equipment, noise and setup demands associated with experiments, cooking or performance. At the same time, placing these uses in the same building allows children to move between familiar home rooms and shared resources. No schedule, enrollment capacity or acoustic separation rating is published, so the operational balance cannot be quantified from the project descriptions.

Why the vertical arrangement matters
Putting preschool classrooms on the first floor gives the youngest users direct access to the courtyard and arrival level. School-age labs upstairs create a second zone for older children without requiring the preschool rooms to double as every kind of workshop. The arrangement also introduces stair, elevator, egress and supervision questions that any operating center must resolve. The articles identify the floors and uses but do not provide a code analysis or circulation plan for those elements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChild-scale details are part of the architecture
Azure’s account emphasizes details sized for young users: low-level amenities, flush locker cubbies, built-in furniture and integrated storage. Cubbies are positioned so children can reach their own belongings, and the courtyard lockers use a skyline graphic to make the storage wall legible as part of the room. These choices reduce the visual clutter of freestanding equipment and make the building’s edges usable at a child’s height.
Plank flooring continues into the entry and window surrounds. The feature describes the resulting surfaces as smooth, pared down, durable and easy to clean. Those are stated design intentions. The published material does not give a flooring specification, maintenance schedule, slip-resistance value or replacement history, so it cannot support a numerical claim about service life or cleaning performance.
Designing storage into circulation
Storage is often treated as leftover space in childcare plans, yet arrival generates coats, shoes, bags, teaching materials and cleaning supplies. At City Kids, the thickened courtyard wall and flush cubbies absorb some of that demand. For another project, the transferable lesson is to draw storage into the circulation diagram from the start: identify who uses each cabinet, keep adult-only supplies secure, preserve clear egress widths and leave enough room for a child to open a cubby without blocking the route.
Acoustic treatment: a visible intervention, not a measured result
A curved wall along the courtyard carries graphic acoustic felt panels. Azure says the panels add visual interest and reduce ambient noise. Their shape and placement make acoustics part of the central room’s identity rather than an invisible ceiling treatment.

No decibel readings, reverberation times, material absorption coefficients or post-occupancy acoustic study are reported. It is therefore accurate to say that acoustic felt was specified and that the feature describes a noise-reduction intent. It is not accurate to claim a measured reduction, improved speech intelligibility or a proven benefit for children and staff.
Questions for evaluating a similar treatment
- What frequency range does the material absorb, and where are the reflective surfaces?
- How much of the wall area is treated relative to the courtyard’s volume?
- Can the panels be cleaned and replaced without disrupting supervision?
- What happens acoustically when the double doors are open and several groups share the court?
- Has the finished room been tested for reverberation and speech clarity?
Those measurements would be needed to turn a visual specification into evidence of performance. They are not supplied for City Kids.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pandemic-era air and entry measures
The 2021 descriptions record several changes associated with the COVID-19 period. The project includes electronic and ultraviolet-light HVAC filtration, touchless security and check-in points, and operable windows intended to bring light and air into classrooms. These measures sit alongside the courtyard strategy rather than replacing it: the plan addresses connection and supervision, while the equipment and windows address the indoor environment and arrival process.
The documentation does not identify the HVAC manufacturer or model, filter class, ultraviolet dose, outdoor-air rate, control sequence or commissioning results. It also reports no measured infection rates or other health outcomes. Filtration and ultraviolet devices can be designed in many ways, and their effectiveness depends on installation, maintenance, airflow and operating conditions. The City Kids feature should therefore be read as a record of specified adaptations, not a guarantee of infection prevention.

What an operator would need to verify
- Obtain the mechanical schedules and confirm the installed filter and ultraviolet equipment against the design documents.
- Measure outdoor-air delivery and room air distribution under occupied conditions.
- Document filter-change intervals, lamp maintenance and controls training.
- Check that operable windows can be used safely without compromising child security, comfort or code compliance.
- Review touchless entry hardware for accessibility, emergency release and privacy of check-in data.
None of these verification records appears in the published project descriptions.

Does the floor plan work?
The plan clearly works as an architectural proposition: it replaces a linear sequence with a central social room and uses openings, windows and shared utilities to connect six classrooms. It also provides a coherent place for reception, storage and circulation. Those are observable relationships in the drawings and descriptions.
Whether it works better than a conventional daycare is an unanswered empirical question. Azure and BAAO do not publish a comparative study, educational assessments, acoustic measurements or post-occupancy health data. There is no basis to attribute learning gains, calmer behavior, greater independence or improved ventilation outcomes to the plan. Readers should separate the documented design intent from claims that would require evaluation after occupation.
How to read the project as a design precedent
Architects, operators and educators can study City Kids through a set of concrete questions rather than copying its appearance.

What is distinctive about the Brooklyn example
Many childcare projects include windows, storage or specialist rooms. City Kids is distinctive in how those elements are gathered around one interior court. The courtyard is not merely an atrium or decorative void; it is the address for six classrooms, the route through the first floor and the place where reception, lockers and shared activity meet. The design’s inventiveness lies in that relationship.
The project also demonstrates how a facility can layer different degrees of openness. Classroom doors, interior windows, shared sinks, half-height partitions and built-in edges each provide a different amount of connection. Instead of choosing between completely separate rooms and one undivided hall, the plan offers a sequence of thresholds. That is a useful idea for anyone balancing privacy, supervision and community in an early-learning building.
Limits of the available evidence
The named sources are a 2021 Azure Magazine feature by Elena Senechal-Becker with photography by Francis Dzikowski, BAAO’s 2021 project description and technical sheet, and the current City Kids “About” page. The Azure article contains no attributable quotation from a project representative, architect or regulator, so there is no named-person statement to reproduce.
Together, the sources establish the floor-plan organization, room types, dimensions, materials and specified environmental measures. They do not establish comparative educational results, measured acoustic performance, ventilation rates, equipment specifications, maintenance records or current operating outcomes. Keeping those boundaries visible is essential when presenting the center as an architectural case study rather than as a tested intervention.
