A custom stainless-steel wall is the central organizing device in this 710-square-foot Paris apartment. Designed by Lieu Architecture for a young family, it runs from the entrance to the far end of the living room, conceals water-supply conduits, and supports mirrors, coat hooks, storage doors and movable ledges without breaking the room into small compartments.
The result is not a retail product or a standard shelving system. It is an architectural installation that lets one long loftlike room perform several jobs while a second, wenge-veneered volume separates the living and kitchen areas. The apartment’s dark wood, reflective metal and vivid orange finishes make the storage strategy visible as design rather than treating it as an afterthought.

The organizing idea: one continuous wall instead of scattered cabinets
The apartment is compact, but its plan is not treated as a collection of isolated rooms. Lieu Architecture reconfigured it as one loftlike space and used a single material line to give that open plan a clear direction. The stainless-steel surface starts at the front door and continues to the opposite end of the living room, guiding the eye through the length of the home.
That continuity matters in a narrow or elongated apartment. Freestanding cupboards would create a series of visual stops, each with its own depth, color and gap. A visual spine for the long plan

What the stainless-steel wall carries
The feature identifies several uses rather than one large built-in cabinet. Each attachment solves a different everyday problem and keeps the floor plane open.

These functions are related but not interchangeable. A mirror can expand the visual field, a ledge can hold objects, and a concealed conduit can make plumbing less prominent. Combining them on one wall is the project’s distinctive move.

The wenge volume opposite the steel
Across from the stainless-steel wall, a dark wenge-veneer module divides the living and kitchen zones. It is another piece of built architecture, but it works differently: the steel wall organizes the perimeter, while the wenge element occupies the room as a thick dividing volume.

The module conceals storage doors and incorporates a bar requested by owners who are passionate about spirits. Meuleman describes the bar as something “which opens like a trunk,” a phrase that captures its concealed, furniture-like operation. When closed, the dark wood reads as a clean plane; when opened, it reveals a dedicated hospitality feature without requiring a separate bar cabinet.
The kitchen sits on the other side of this divider. That arrangement gives the apartment a degree of zoning without building a conventional wall from floor to ceiling. Living, dining and cooking remain visually connected, yet storage and the bar are assigned to a single, legible element.
Light, windows and the 301-square-foot terrace
The compact kitchen uses a mirrored wall to amplify available light. In this setting, the mirror is not merely decorative: it repeats brightness and creates depth where cabinetry and work surfaces could otherwise make the room feel compressed.
Bay windows open onto a 301-square-foot terrace. The terrace is envisioned as an extension of the living room during summer, so the apartment’s usable social area expands beyond its interior footprint when weather permits. The aluminum windows date from renovations in the 1970s; Meuleman calls them attractive, and the feature identifies them as the access point to the terrace.

The 301-square-foot figure is a property dimension reported for this apartment, not a general rule about how much outdoor space a small home needs. Likewise, the 710-square-foot interior area describes this residence and should not be treated as a performance benchmark for other floor plans.
Bedrooms and the orange en suite
Both bedrooms have integrated closets, keeping clothing storage within the rooms instead of adding more freestanding furniture to the shared living space. In the primary suite, the wenge veneer continues across the headboard, tying the private room to the darker wood volume in the main plan.
The en suite bathroom takes a deliberately different direction. Its floor is waxed concrete and the palette is entirely orange, reflecting the owners’ preference for bright orange as part of the apartment’s broader mix of dark woods and metallic details. The strong color makes the bathroom a distinct interior rather than a neutral continuation of the bedroom.
An apartment with several historical layers
Architectural Digest published the feature on June 10, 2026, by Annabelle Dufraigne, with photography by Jean-Baptiste Thiriet. The article describes an earlier use of the apartment in 1870 as an atelier associated with Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. It also says the building underwent a substantial residential renovation roughly a century after that atelier period.

The current redesign by Lieu Architecture does not attempt to recreate an atelier. Instead, it places contemporary stainless steel, wenge veneer, mirrored surfaces and orange finishes inside a home whose history remains part of its identity. The result is layered rather than period-pure: older architectural traces, 1970s aluminum windows and new custom insertions coexist.

Continuous built-in versus freestanding storage
The project makes a useful distinction between an integrated wall and furniture placed against a wall. The comparison below describes functions visible in the apartment; it does not establish costs, durability ratings or measured space savings.

What a storage wall can hide
This apartment demonstrates that a storage wall can conceal more than coats and books. Here, the hidden or integrated functions include water-supply conduits, storage doors and a bar. The important planning question is not simply how many shelves fit; it is which services, doors and daily-use objects can share one coordinated line.
For a renovation, begin by mapping the services that must cross the room. Plumbing routes need access and coordination with the kitchen or bathroom; a finished panel should never be treated as permission to bury components without a maintenance plan. Next, mark the locations where people naturally pause—at the entrance, beside the living area and near circulation routes—then assign mirrors, hooks or ledges to those points.
How to adapt the idea without copying the installation
- Measure the real circulation path. Record door swings, passage widths and the depth available along the chosen wall. The Paris project’s 710-square-foot area does not determine dimensions for another apartment.
- Separate fixed infrastructure from changeable storage. Decide which conduits, outlets or access panels must remain fixed, then design ledges and hooks as the elements that can move.
- Choose one continuous visual treatment. Stainless steel is the featured material, but the underlying principle is an uninterrupted surface. Any substitute should be described as an adaptation, not as the same installation.
- Coordinate the opposite side. If a divider or cabinet volume faces the wall, use it to assign a second group of functions—such as the wenge module’s concealed storage and bar—rather than duplicating shelves on both sides.
- Plan maintenance before closing the wall. Identify every valve, junction and access point, and keep those locations serviceable behind removable panels or doors.
- Test the lighting and reflections. Mirrors and metal alter how daylight and artificial light move through a compact room. Sample finishes in the actual space before committing to a full run.
A modular wall shelf or wall-mounted organizer can borrow the idea of movable ledges for a smaller project, but it will not provide the featured installation’s integrated conduit concealment, full-length visual continuity or custom coordination with the apartment’s other built-ins.
Why the material palette feels intentional
The apartment’s palette is organized around contrast. Stainless steel supplies a cool, reflective surface; wenge veneer adds visual weight and warmth; the mirrored kitchen bounces light; and the orange bathroom supplies a saturated color field. None of these materials is presented as a universal solution. Their effect comes from how Lieu Architecture assigns each one a role.

The steel is used where continuity and attachment matter. Wenge appears where thickness, storage and separation are useful. Mirror is concentrated in the compact kitchen, where reflected light can make the room feel more open. Orange is reserved for the en suite, allowing the private bathroom to have its own identity while still belonging to the overall composition.
What this project does—and does not—prove
The apartment shows a convincing way to add storage to a small home without dividing it into a chain of closed rooms. It documents a custom wall that combines circulation, services, hanging storage, mirrors and adjustable shelves, plus a separate built-in volume that handles zoning and concealed hospitality storage.
It does not provide a budget, construction drawings, technical performance tests, market statistics or a measured comparison with freestanding furniture. The historical account of the 1870 atelier and the later renovation is presented as the feature reports it. Readers considering a similar installation will need a site-specific survey and detailed coordination with an architect, builder or millworker.
The practical lesson from the Paris apartment
The strongest lesson is organizational rather than stylistic: give one architectural line several jobs, and let movable components handle changing needs. In this apartment, the stainless-steel wall keeps the long plan visually open while hiding infrastructure and supporting everyday storage. The wenge module provides a second, thicker layer of organization, and the terrace, mirrored kitchen and integrated bedroom closets extend that logic beyond the main wall.
That combination is why the apartment feels ordered without feeling over-furnished. Storage is not scattered across the floor; it is absorbed into the architecture, while the owners’ preference for dark wood, metal and orange remains visible throughout the home.
