A 40-square-foot townhouse bathroom feels more expansive in architect Julia Gallagher’s renovation because of a custom corner mirror, wallpaper across the walls and ceiling, and a layout that works better—not because wallpaper alone has been shown to enlarge a room. The project, designed for homeowner Amma Phaff, offers a useful example of how those choices can change a small bathroom’s experience.
What changed in the 40-square-foot bathroom
Gallagher, principal architect and founder of JAGA Studio, designed the renovation for her cousin and client, Phaff. The original room was beige, and its toilet placement kept the door from opening fully. The makeover addressed both the look and the room’s function.

- Walls and ceiling: Mood Ring Wallpaper in Fontana from Backdrop Home brought a colorful, organic pattern across both surfaces.
- Floor: Matte ceramic 4×4 tiles in Molasses from Zia Tile added a warm burgundy tone. The project story says the color complements a ring in the wallpaper pattern.
- Mirror: A custom-cut mirror was fitted into a corner, where Gallagher said its placement made the small room feel larger.
- Layout: The toilet was relocated so the door could open fully, and a wall-mounted porcelain sink replaced the original vanity.
Gallagher described the result as “A corner mirror detail paired with the psychedelic wallpaper amplifies the space into another dimension, turning the room into a joyful little jewel box hidden inside the home.” She also said, “The layout and wallpaper really transform the functionality and experience of the room.” These are her descriptions of this project, not measured findings about wallpaper or small bathrooms generally. Apartment Therapy’s October 7, 2026 project story documents the renovation; AOL’s same-day version is a syndicated account, not independent corroboration.

Why the room can feel more open
The mirror adds a visual extension
A mirror reflects part of the room, giving the eye more to take in than a solid corner would. In this renovation, the custom corner placement was the feature Gallagher specifically credited with making the small space feel larger. The source reports no before-and-after measurements of perceived size, so treat “bigger” as the designer’s account of the room’s experience—not a change in its actual area.
The wallpaper makes a deliberate visual statement
Using the pattern on the walls and ceiling gives the small room a continuous, immersive look. Here, the wallpaper was part of a coordinated design with burgundy floor tile, rather than an isolated trick for creating space. The project source does not establish that wallpaper by itself makes a bathroom appear larger.

The layout improves usable space
Moving the toilet addressed a practical constraint: the door could not fully open in its original arrangement. Replacing the vanity with a wall-mounted porcelain sink also changed the room’s fixtures and the space around them. Those functional decisions are distinct from the visual effect of the mirror and wallpaper.
What to consider before adapting the look
- Start with circulation. Check whether the door opens fully and whether the toilet and sink arrangement suits the room before choosing finishes. This project required relocating the toilet to solve the door-clearance problem.
- Choose the visual effect you want. The renovation pairs an expressive wallpaper pattern with a warm, coordinating floor color. You can take inspiration from that relationship without using the same products.
- Think about the mirror’s position. Gallagher’s account emphasizes an intentionally placed corner mirror, not simply adding any mirror anywhere. The feature in this project was custom cut.
- Match the scope to your space. Apartment Therapy identifies this as a professional renovation and not a rental-friendly makeover. The story does not provide installation instructions, wallpaper water-resistance specifications, pricing, or current product availability, so confirm those details before selecting materials or planning work.
The project names Mood Ring Wallpaper in Fontana from Backdrop Home and Molasses ceramic 4×4 tiles from Zia Tile, but it does not establish current stock or technical specifications for either product.
