In Malmsbury, Victoria, Perversi-Brooks Architects transformed a dark, owner-built house from the late 1970s into a brighter home for an extensive collection of toys, artworks and objects. The project did not begin with a blank site or a new chalet. It retained the existing mud-brick and brick shell, inserted a compact north-facing sunroom, reorganised circulation with a black steel spiral stair and turned former stair and door locations into display joinery.

The owners’ memorable brief was “A Mexican-Swiss Chalet in the Aussie Bush”. Its practical meaning was more light, more useful wall space and a stronger relationship with the established garden. Completed in 2015, the 206 m² renovation shows how a small, carefully positioned addition can change the experience of an existing house without erasing its history.

The house sits just outside Malmsbury in an established garden. The project account reports Rural Living zoning together with environmental-significance, erosion-management and heritage overlays, plus a bushfire-prone-area designation. Those descriptions belong to the project record; they should not be treated as current parcel-level planning or bushfire advice.

The problem was a dark house with nowhere to put the collection

The original building was owner-built in the late 1970s. Its palette included mud brick, conventional brick, timber and other interior linings. Although the materials gave the house a strong, handmade character, the rooms were described as dark and somewhat drab. The owners also had a large collection of objects, toys and artworks that needed to be seen rather than packed away.

The owner was a French-speaking Swiss former chef and toy-museum owner who later became an artist. Mexican colour, pattern and imagery informed his taste, while the setting demanded a response to the Australian bush rather than a literal imported style. The brief therefore combined an emotional image with two precise design tasks: get daylight farther into the existing living areas and recover enough wall and floor area for circulation, storage and display.

That distinction matters. “Mexican-Swiss Chalet” is not a claim that the house reproduces a traditional Swiss or Mexican building. It is a shorthand for a layered interior: Swiss associations of timber and chalet life, Mexican-like colour and pattern, and the textures and garden of regional Victoria.

A small north-facing sunroom changes the centre of the house

Daylight is pulled deeper inside

The principal spatial intervention is a glazed addition of about 10 m² on the north side. In the Southern Hemisphere, a north-facing opening can receive useful sunlight through much of the year, and the architects placed the sunroom where it could do more than create another perimeter room. Their stated intention was for the extension to “draw more light deeper into the living areas” while visually extending the living space into the landscape.

The result is a compact daylight device rather than a large expansion. The glazing sits at the edge of the existing rooms, so views and reflected light reach beyond the sunroom itself. It provides a place to sit, read or eat breakfast in the warmth of the sun, but its larger effect is perceptual: the living areas no longer terminate at a dark wall.

The floor becomes a seat and a garden edge

Inside, reclaimed and recycled red brick forms the sunroom floor. Instead of stopping at the glass line, the brick surface folds upward into a built-in seat or plinth. It then continues through the full-height glazing as a geometric edge in the garden. One continuous material therefore performs three jobs: walking surface, furniture and landscape threshold.

This detail makes the extension feel more connected to the garden than a conventional glazed box. The raised brick form gives occupants a place to pause, while the continuation outside establishes a visual datum between house and planting. The project description says planting was intended to develop around this geometry over time; it does not document the garden’s present condition.

What the sunroom does not prove

The project accounts describe design intent and specified materials, not measured post-occupancy results. There are no published figures for annual energy use, indoor temperatures, daylight levels, water savings or the amount of solar heat delivered to the rooms. A secondary description characterises the brick floor as storing solar warmth, but that is an editorial interpretation, not a reported measurement. The sunroom can be understood as a daylight and spatial-connection strategy without claiming a quantified performance outcome.

Circulation is redesigned to recover display space

One spiral stair replaces two timber stairs

Before the renovation, two timber stairs consumed useful floor and wall area. The architects replaced them with a single black steel spiral stair. This is a compact move with an unusually large effect in a collection-filled house: circulation is concentrated into a smaller footprint, and the linear walls formerly interrupted by stair flights become available for storage, objects and artwork.

The spiral stair is also a visual counterpoint to the retained masonry and timber. Its dark steel gives the interior a crisp vertical element without adding another broad, opaque partition. The project lists Enzie spiral stair and balustrade components among the specified products, but the stair should be understood as part of this custom renovation rather than a universal product recommendation.

A bridge links the two lofts

The two lofts were largely retained. Apart from paint and new carpet, they were left in place, while a bridge was introduced to connect them. This allows movement between the upper spaces without rebuilding both lofts and keeps the intervention focused on the areas that most affected the ground-floor experience.

Architecturally, the bridge turns a previously separated arrangement into a connected sequence. Practically, it avoids spending the renovation budget on wholesale reconstruction. The combination of bridge and spiral stair also clarifies how people move through the house, freeing more usable surfaces below.

Joinery turns former dead zones into a collection display

The fireplace wall serves two rooms at once

A large custom joinery element occupies the location of one former stair behind the existing fireplace. On the second-bedroom side, it functions as a robe. Facing the living room, it stores the television, stereo, books and firewood while displaying selected objects. This is not display added after the plan was finished; storage, media equipment, heating fuel and the collection are designed as one wall-sized piece.

The arrangement demonstrates a useful principle for homes with collections: display does not have to compete with everyday equipment. By giving practical items dedicated compartments, the visible shelves can remain selective rather than becoming an uncontrolled accumulation of objects.

Another former stair and an old door become cabinets

Additional display cabinets occupy a second former stair space and the location of an old external door. These positions are significant because they use areas that would otherwise be awkward to furnish. Removing a stair or closing a door can leave structural, dimensional or circulation constraints; custom joinery makes those constraints useful instead of hiding them behind blank plasterboard.

The result is a house where the collection helps explain the plan. Objects mark old routes, new routes and thresholds. The architecture does not create a neutral gallery; it makes the building’s previous alterations part of the display infrastructure.

The existing shell is lightened rather than discarded

The kitchen, bathroom and stairs were gutted, but the broader house was reused. Mud brick, conventional brick, timber and other retained linings were painted white to increase visual brightness. White surfaces reflect the daylight brought by the new glazing and provide a calmer background for saturated objects, artwork and patterned details.

The new kitchen combines timber-veneer fronts, overhead cupboards and stainless-steel benches. The mix keeps a tactile timber note associated with the chalet idea while giving the working surfaces a hard-wearing, professional character suited to an owner with a culinary background. Forbo Marmoleum is listed for the kitchen floor, and the project also names an ILVE oven, Sharp refrigerator, Asko dishwasher and Qasair rangehood as specified products.

A bathroom carries the colour story

The renewed bathroom uses white tiles, a heated towel rail and updated fixtures. Its custom mosaic introduces Mexican-like colours in a pixelated octopus motif. The project account links the octopus to the owner’s former life as a seafood chef, so the pattern is both decorative and autobiographical.

  • The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
  • These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

This is a more precise use of colour than painting every room bright. Most of the retained shell becomes a light backdrop, while the mosaic concentrates pattern, memory and visual intensity in a small room. The strategy lets a highly personal detail coexist with the collection without making every surface compete for attention.

Materials and environmental measures documented for the renovation

The project record lists several resource-conscious decisions. They describe specification and design intent; no measured operational savings are reported.

Feature How it is used in the project Evidence boundary
Existing structure The late-1970s house is retained and upgraded instead of replaced. A documented reuse strategy, not a quantified embodied-carbon assessment.
Glazing High-performance double glazing is used in the new sunroom structure. The account does not publish U-values, solar-gain figures or post-occupancy results.
Brick Reclaimed and recycled red brick forms the sunroom floor and exterior plinth. The source does not identify a current retail supplier for this exact reused material.
Interior lining Super E0 hoop-pine structural interior linings are specified. A listed material specification, not a whole-house environmental rating.
Water Tanks supply drinking water, landscape irrigation and bushfire protection; water-efficient fixtures and fittings are listed. No consumption or savings measurements are given.
Heating An efficient wood-burning heater uses timber found on site. “Efficient” is the project description; no emissions or efficiency test result is supplied.
Finishes Natural oil finishes are used on interior timber. The project names Livos Kunos natural oil; maintenance intervals are not reported.

Other named products include Viridian Energytech Clear insulated glass units, natural-finish elZinc roofing with a flat-lock joint, Elton Group timber veneer, Enzie spiral stair and balustrades, and Dulux paint products. These names record what was specified for this project in the published account. Current formulations, availability and installation details may differ.

Why the renovation works as a design lesson

Use orientation before adding floor area

The sunroom is small, but its north-facing position and full-height glazing address the central complaint directly. Before enlarging a house, examine whether a compact addition can improve the light distribution and outlook of several existing rooms. The useful measure is not only added square metres; it is how far daylight and visual connection travel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make circulation earn its footprint

Replacing two stairs with one spiral stair and adding a bridge releases wall and floor area without sacrificing access to the lofts. In a collection-heavy home, every linear metre recovered from circulation can become shelving, a cabinet or a place to hang work.

Design storage around real objects

The joinery accommodates a robe, television, stereo, books, firewood and selected display pieces in one coordinated element. A collector’s storage plan should begin with actual object types, sizes, handling frequency and services, not with generic open shelving. Closed compartments protect less frequently handled pieces; open shelves reserve attention for the objects the owners want to see every day.

Let one material cross a threshold

The brick floor’s movement from interior surface to seat to garden plinth gives the extension a strong identity without relying on ornament alone. Repeating a material across a threshold can make a small addition feel intentional, especially when the material has texture and a clear geometric edge.

Keep the old building legible

Painting retained materials white does not erase the mud brick, brickwork or timber; it changes how they receive light. The renovation remains readable as an altered late-1970s house, not a new object pretending to be old. That approach can reduce demolition while allowing new work to be clearly contemporary.

Constraints a similar project would need to resolve

Malmsbury’s reported planning context illustrates why a daylight addition cannot be designed from photographs alone. Rural Living, environmental-significance, erosion-management and heritage overlays, along with bushfire-prone-area status, can affect siting, materials, access, vegetation and approvals. Anyone adapting the idea elsewhere would need current advice from the relevant Victorian planning authority and qualified consultants; the 2015 project description does not establish today’s controls.

Existing mud-brick construction also demands careful investigation before cutting openings or attaching new work. A designer would need to verify structure, moisture behaviour, movement joints, drainage and the capacity of the old shell to accept new glazing and roof junctions. The published case study does not provide construction drawings or a step-by-step technical detail for these interfaces.

Collections create additional practical requirements: shelf loading, dust control, UV exposure, access for large objects, safe clearances around the heater and routes for moving furniture. The Malmsbury project resolves these issues through custom joinery and a reorganised plan, but its dimensions should not be copied without measuring the particular house and collection.

What is established—and what remains unknown

It is established that Perversi-Brooks Architects renovated a 206 m² owner-built house near Malmsbury, completed the work in 2015, added an approximately 10 m² north-facing glazed sunroom, replaced two timber stairs with a black steel spiral stair, connected two lofts with a bridge and installed custom storage and display joinery. The project account also identifies reclaimed brick, double glazing, water tanks and water-efficient fittings among its environmental measures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not established from the published accounts how much the house’s energy use changed, how warm the brick floor makes the sunroom, how much water the tanks supply annually, or what the renovation would cost in 2026. The reported $285,000 budget belongs to the completed 2015 project and is not a present-day quotation. Those limits do not weaken the design lesson; they define it accurately. This is a documented example of spatial, material and daylight strategy, not a measured performance study.
