In a Logan Square, Chicago, makeover, interior designer Jennifer Sucher used saturated orange, cream, green, plaid and flannel-inspired textures to turn a storage-filled basement into a room for reading, watching sports, toddler play and entertaining. The winning strategy was to design for the room’s natural mood, then improve circulation, storage and durability around real family routines.

The project, documented by Domino on September 26, 2026, involved former friends of Sucher whose basement had accumulated sports memorabilia, office papers and old furniture. They wanted a space they would deliberately choose to use, rather than a holding area for things that had nowhere else to go. Their shared memories of Camp Tamakwa supplied the emotional brief: a nostalgic, nature-influenced room with sunset colors, plaids and flannels.
Design for the basement you have, not an imaginary bright room
The central decision was to stop treating the basement’s gloom as a defect that had to be disguised. Sucher explained, “The goal wasn’t to keep it light and bright. We leaned into the moodiness. We weren’t afraid to play with contrast and color.” That approach gives a below-grade room a coherent identity. Instead of scattering pale finishes in the hope of making the ceiling feel higher, choose a palette that makes low light feel intentional and gives every zone a reason to exist.
Begin by listing the activities the room must support at the same time. In this case they were reading, sports viewing, play and hosting. That list affected the location and size of the sectional, the number of tables, the toy-storage solution and the lighting in a dark corner. A basement makeover works when the plan answers those practical questions before decorative purchases begin.

Use a deliberate color story
Put the strongest color where it can create structure
Masada, a sunbaked orange from Benjamin Moore, was applied to the ceiling and carried down onto the upper portions of the walls. Chamois was used on the walls below that transition. The result is not an arbitrary two-tone treatment: the horizontal change in color visually suggests crown molding in a room with little architectural detail. Sucher described the tactic simply: “I like to drop a paint line.”

A dropped paint line can help a basement in several ways. It gives the eye a clear stopping point, makes a plain ceiling feel considered and creates a frame for furniture without constructing trim. It is a design solution, not a universal rule; test the relationship among ceiling height, existing windows, wall interruptions and the mood you want before committing. Keep the line consistent around corners unless a doorway or built-in requires a deliberate break.
Balance the orange with quieter surfaces
Chamois keeps the orange from becoming an all-over field of intense color. Newt Green on the banquette adds a botanical note that connects the palette to the Camp Tamakwa memories. Plaid cushions, a wool-check ottoman and flannel references supply pattern and tactile variation without introducing unrelated colors. The lesson is to repeat a small group of hues in paint, upholstery and accessories rather than assigning a new color to every object.
Let furnishings carry the nostalgia
The room’s backstory is present through materials and collected pieces, not a themed set. A custom painting by Hayley Carrow, an antique armoire from Good Behavior, a vintage Adrian Pearsall chaise and a side table from Studio London sit alongside newer furniture. This mixture makes the room feel accumulated and personal. If you are adapting the idea, select one or two meaningful vintage or handmade pieces, then let the paint and textiles do the connecting work.

The original layout put the television between glass-block windows and placed a sofa across the room, effectively bisecting the floor. The redesign reversed those priorities. A Bernhardt Soleil sectional was fitted into the window bay, leaving a more open area in front of it. The change did more than improve the view: it created a continuous path through the room and separated lounging from the circulation route.

- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
Measure the path before measuring the sofa
Map the door, stairs, windows, banquette and any fixed columns first. Mark the route people naturally take from the stairs to the seating, bathroom or storage. Then place the largest piece so it defines a zone without cutting that route in half. In the Chicago basement, the window bay became the sectional’s anchor; your room may have a different architectural feature that deserves that role.
Use smaller tables when a large one blocks movement
The existing banquette remained, but one massive table was replaced with two smaller DWR bistro tables. Separate tables can be pulled together for a group or moved aside for play, while preserving access to the banquette. This is a useful pattern for multipurpose basements: choose pieces that can change position instead of committing the entire center of the room to one footprint.
Keep sightlines useful for adults and children
Place the television where it can be seen from the main seating without forcing every chair to face it. Leave a visible, open patch of floor for a toddler, and avoid making the only route to storage pass through that play area. The project’s sectional-and-bistro-table arrangement demonstrates the principle without requiring a particular room size or furniture brand.

Choose basement flooring with water exposure in mind
The makeover used Masland carpet in Saffron, identified in the feature as EnVision BCF Nylon and sourced through Oscar Isberian Rugs. Sucher described the fiber as crush- and stain-resistant and said it could be revived after water exposure. Her comparison was specific to this selected carpet and her experience; the feature provides no independent test, warranty, measured performance result or guarantee.

Before ordering any basement carpet, identify the room’s actual moisture risk, ask the installer how the carpet and pad would be handled after a leak, and obtain the manufacturer’s current care and warranty documents. Do not treat one designer’s account as a performance rating for every nylon or wool product. The relevant comparison is not simply “synthetic versus natural”; it is the particular fiber, construction, backing, pad, installation and recovery plan.
Retain useful built-ins and make them feel new
The banquette was not demolished. It received Newt Green paint and new plaid cushions, turning an existing feature into a deliberate color anchor. Reusing a sound built-in saves disruption and preserves the room’s character. Inspect fixed seating for structural, moisture or upholstery problems first; if it is serviceable, a new finish and textile may accomplish more than replacement.
Textile scale matters in a basement with many hard surfaces. The Pindler plaid on the banquette and the wool check on the ottoman provide pattern at different sizes, so the room feels layered rather than visually noisy. Use one dominant pattern, one supporting pattern and solids that repeat the paint colors to maintain control.
Hide family clutter without losing access
A large antique chest stores the toddler’s toys. When the toys are put away, the object reads as living-room furniture rather than a plastic play bin. This is a practical storage test: every category that lands on the floor needs a home that can be reached quickly and closed or covered when guests arrive.

Group storage by the action it supports. Toys belong near the play zone, reading materials near the chaise or sectional, and sports-viewing accessories near the seating rather than in a remote closet. An armoire can conceal papers or equipment while contributing to the room’s collected look. Storage should reduce visual noise without requiring a complicated reset routine.

A plug-in sconce brightens a shadowed corner in the finished room. Because the source identifies the item only as a sconce found on Etsy, no exact model or current listing can be assumed. The broader lesson is to add light where the room fails at a task: a reading seat needs usable reading light, while a passage needs enough illumination for safe movement. Plug-in fixtures can be useful when opening a wall for new wiring is not part of the project, but route the cord so it cannot become a trip hazard.
Use the ceiling fixture for general orientation, then add task or accent sources at seating and storage. Warm-toned light generally supports the sunset palette, but select the lamp and bulb together so orange paint does not become visually harsh. Check how the light renders the paint at night before finalizing the finish.

A practical sequence for adapting the makeover
- Clear and classify. Remove stored items, separate keep, donate and relocate piles, and measure what must return to the room.
- Record fixed conditions. Note windows, glass block, stairs, columns, banquettes, outlets and any signs of moisture before choosing finishes.
- Write the activity brief. Name the seating, viewing, play, reading and hosting functions that must coexist.
- Draw circulation first. Sketch the route from the entry to each important destination, then place the largest seating piece so it does not interrupt that route.
- Test the color line. Paint sample areas for the ceiling, upper-wall transition and lower wall; view them in daylight and at night before painting the full room.
- Anchor the palette. Select one dominant sunset hue, one quieter wall color and one nature-inspired accent, then repeat them in upholstery or accessories.
- Evaluate the floor assembly. Ask about moisture exposure, carpet construction, pad, installation and post-leak recovery before ordering.
- Adapt what works. Keep a sound banquette or built-in, update its paint and cushions, and replace only pieces that block use or no longer fit the plan.
- Add concealed storage. Size a chest, armoire or cabinet to the objects that routinely create clutter, with access appropriate for the family member who will use it.
- Light task zones. Add a reading light, corner lamp or sconce where the ceiling fixture leaves a functional gap, and secure cords away from traffic.
- Finish with personal pieces. Bring in art, vintage furniture and collected objects after the large-scale layout and color relationships are working.

What makes this basement makeover transferable
The most useful idea is not the exact orange, sectional or carpet. It is the order of decisions. First, define how the household wants to spend time in the room. Next, let the basement’s low-light character inform the palette instead of fighting it. Then use paint placement to suggest structure, position furniture around circulation, select flooring with the room’s moisture realities in view, retain serviceable built-ins and give everyday clutter a concealed home. Those choices turn a formerly chaotic basement into a room with a clear purpose and a visual point of view.
Sucher’s approach is a documented solution for one Chicago home, not a universal paint formula or a tested flooring standard. Use the same reasoning while adjusting colors, materials and furniture footprints to your own ceiling height, windows, water risk, household and budget.
