Julia’s kitchen project began with restored 1950s chrome-and-vinyl dining chairs, a refinished chrome-and-Formica table and a short list of cosmetic updates. It ended up involving cabinet replacement, a wall opening to the family room, a new great-room concept, beadboard, ceiling removal and active cabinet spraying. Kristi Linauer’s account is memorable because it captures the moment a redecorating job stops being a refresh and becomes a structural remodel.
The short answer: the scope changed twice
The project expanded in two decisive stages. First, a proposed window above the sink prompted a larger conversation about how the kitchen connected to the family room. Instead of adding that window, the team moved toward removing the separating wall and creating a more open great-room arrangement with a bar area. Second, the contractor later advised removing the existing cabinets and replacing them, taking the work far beyond new doors and paint.

It is a progress report about a changing project, not a finished-room specification or a step-by-step construction manual.
What Julia wanted at the beginning
The original room was described as a small, enclosed kitchen and breakfast area with a distinctly dated 1950s-and-later mix of finishes. Linauer’s description includes:

- Plain white cabinets
- Stained laminate countertops
- Reddish brick-type flooring
- Dark floral wallpaper
- A heavy balloon shade
- A popcorn ceiling
- Dated appliances
- Brass lighting
Julia’s first plan was targeted rather than structural. It included restoring inherited dining furniture and updating selected surfaces, fixtures and finishes. The proposed scope called for new cabinet doors and paint, wallpaper removal, beadboard and paint, new lighting and appliances, new window treatments and new countertops.
That starting point matters because each item, considered alone, sounds like a manageable refresh. New doors can change the appearance of cabinets without replacing their boxes. Wallpaper removal and paint can alter a room quickly. Lighting, window treatments and countertops can modernize the visual character while leaving the basic layout intact. The project did not begin as an attempt to rebuild the kitchen from the floor up.
How the window question changed the layout discussion
Julia wanted to know whether a window could be installed above the sink so she could see into the family room. The author and contractor rejected that particular window proposal. The conversation did not end there; it shifted to a more consequential question: should the wall between the kitchen and family room be removed instead?
That change in thinking is the turning point in the story. A window would have created a visual connection through one opening. Removing the wall would change circulation, sightlines and the relationship between the two rooms. The proposed result was a great room with a bar area, rather than two fully separated spaces.
For homeowners, the lesson is not that opening a wall is always better. It is that a request for more visibility can expose a larger layout problem or opportunity. Once the team considered the wall as part of the design, the project could no longer be evaluated only by the price of a window, a countertop or a coat of paint.

The cabinet recommendation that pushed the job into a full remodel
The second expansion came later, when the contractor told Linauer that the old cabinets needed to be removed and replaced. This was different from the initial idea of fitting new doors and painting. Cabinet replacement affects demolition, disposal, layout decisions, installation and the sequence of work around countertops, appliances, flooring and wall finishes.
The post does not identify the contractor, explain the technical reason the cabinets had to go or provide a cost breakdown. It therefore cannot establish whether the cabinets were structurally unsound, poorly configured, damaged, or simply incompatible with the revised layout. What it does establish is that the recommendation changed the project’s category: the existing cabinet system was no longer being treated as a surface to refinish.
This distinction is important when reading renovation stories. “Painting the cabinets” and “replacing the cabinets” are not two versions of the same task. Painting preserves the underlying boxes and usually depends on their condition, construction and layout. Replacement creates an opportunity to change storage and dimensions, but it also introduces demolition and installation work that a cosmetic refresh does not require.
What the progress photographs actually show
Linauer’s update records work in progress rather than a final reveal. During the visit:
- The cabinets had received black paint.
- The painter was spraying the cabinets.
- Beadboard had been installed but still needed paint.
- The wall opening to the family room was underway or complete as described in the update.
- The popcorn ceiling was gone.
These details show a project moving through demolition and finishing stages at the same time. A removed ceiling texture, an altered wall and sprayed cabinets each represent a different kind of work. They also explain why a room can look unfinished in progress photographs even when major decisions have already been made.

Cabinet spraying is a finishing method, not proof of a particular product, sprayer model or level of durability. The account does not name the paint brand, primer, equipment, sheen, number of coats or curing schedule. It is accurate to say that the painter was spraying the cabinets; it is not accurate to infer which materials or methods were used beyond that observation.
Why painting becomes more demanding when the scope expands
The story is especially useful for understanding the painter’s place in an expanding remodel. In the original plan, painting was one part of a refresh: cabinet doors, walls after wallpaper removal and beadboard were among the proposed updates. Once demolition and cabinet replacement entered the picture, painting had to fit around construction rather than happen as a single early makeover step.
Surface condition changes
Wallpaper removal can expose uneven drywall, adhesive residue or damaged paper. Beadboard introduces seams, edges and transitions that need careful preparation before finish paint. A popcorn ceiling that has been removed can leave a new ceiling surface requiring its own repair and coating sequence. The post confirms the wallpaper, beadboard and ceiling changes, but it does not document the exact preparation process used.
Access and protection change
Spraying cabinets requires controlling overspray and protecting nearby surfaces. In an active remodel, the painter may be working around exposed openings, unfinished trim, appliances or adjacent rooms. The update does not describe the protection setup, so no specific masking system should be attributed to this project. The practical point is that cabinet spraying belongs to a controlled finishing phase, not an assumption that a spray gun can be used casually in an occupied kitchen.

When walls move and cabinets change, the order of work matters. Demolition and framing decisions need to settle before final patching and finish coats. Beadboard may be installed before it is painted, as the progress update shows. Cabinets may be sprayed while other elements remain unfinished. A photograph taken during that sequence should not be judged as the final quality or color relationship.

A clear timeline of the unexpected remodel
- Furniture and refresh concept: Julia began with inherited chrome-and-vinyl chairs and a chrome/Formica table, plus targeted kitchen and breakfast-area improvements.
- Initial finish scope: The proposed updates included cabinet doors and paint, wallpaper removal, beadboard and paint, lighting, appliances, window treatments and countertops.
- Visibility question: Julia raised the idea of a window above the sink to see into the family room.
- Layout rethink: The window idea was rejected, and discussion moved toward removing the wall between the kitchen and family room for a great room and bar area.
- Cabinet escalation: The contractor later said the old cabinets should be removed and replaced.
- Construction in progress: The update showed black-painted cabinets being sprayed, installed beadboard awaiting paint, the wall opening and removal of the popcorn ceiling.
- Author’s assessment: Linauer said she was glad she accepted the evolving plan, while noting that the post was not a complete final account.
What this account does—and does not—tell you
The post is strong evidence for the project’s changing scope and visible construction stages. It does not provide a complete list of final selections. Readers should not expect it to answer questions such as:
- What the final cabinet material or construction was
- Which paint brand, primer, sheen or spray equipment was used
- Who performed the work
- How much the remodel cost
- Which appliances, lighting fixtures, countertops or window treatments were ultimately selected
- Whether the wall was load-bearing or what structural work was required
- How the finished room performed after completion
Linauer also notes that she could not find the before photographs, so the original condition is conveyed through description rather than a complete visual before-and-after record. The source was published July 14, 2010, and updated December 28, 2015. Its age and progress-report format make precise current pricing or product recommendations inappropriate.
How to keep a refresh from becoming an uncontrolled remodel
Julia’s experience does not mean scope growth is a failure. It shows why homeowners should make decision points explicit before work begins.

Separate cosmetic work from layout work
Write down which tasks preserve the existing room and which alter it. Painting, wallpaper removal, new lighting and window treatments are finish decisions. Removing a wall, relocating a sink or changing cabinet footprints is layout or construction work. Put those categories in separate budgets and schedules.
Inspect before choosing between paint and replacement
Cabinet painting makes sense only when the existing boxes and layout are suitable for continued use. Before ordering doors or selecting a finish, inspect cabinet construction, moisture damage, hinge locations, drawer operation and storage limitations. If a contractor recommends replacement, ask what observed condition or design constraint makes refinishing unsuitable. The account records the recommendation, not the underlying diagnosis, so that explanation must come from the project’s own inspection.

Price the consequence of every “small” change
A window, a wall opening and new cabinets affect more than their individual line items. Ask whether each change alters electrical work, trim, flooring transitions, ventilation, appliance placement, countertop dimensions or paint access. Keep written allowances for demolition, repairs and finishing so an attractive idea does not quietly become an untracked commitment.
Define the painter’s handoff
Before spraying or rolling, confirm who is responsible for surface preparation, caulking, sanding, masking, hardware removal, color approval and final touch-ups. Establish when cabinets can be handled after coating. The post confirms spraying but gives none of these specifications; they must be agreed for each project rather than inferred from a photograph.

Why the story remains useful
The appeal of this remodel is not a named product or a dramatic budget number. It is the recognizable way renovation decisions compound. A homeowner starts by restoring furniture and improving finishes. A desire for a better sightline raises a layout question. A contractor’s assessment changes the cabinet strategy. Soon, the work involves demolition, opening a wall, removing a ceiling texture and coordinating sprayed finishes.
That chain of events is the real subject of Linauer’s July 2010 update. It documents an unexpected full-scale remodel while it was still unfolding, and it leaves the reader with a practical warning: decide how much change you are willing to absorb before the first “small” improvement reveals a larger opportunity.
