In a 1,023-square-foot apartment in Milan’s Città Studi neighborhood, the hallway is not leftover circulation. It is the home’s visual and functional center: a terracotta-and-white promenade with concealed storage, niches, lighting, and a compact work area. Kick.Office, founded by Mario Abruzzese, made the narrow passage the project’s defining room instead of trying to disguise it.

The project at a glance

Detail What the feature reports
Location Città Studi, Milan, in a typical early-1900s building
Area 1,023 square feet, reported by Architectural Digest in 2025
Design studio Kick.Office, founded by Mario Abruzzese
Central design problem A long, narrow hallway that initially felt difficult to use
Hallway interventions Powder-white barrel vault, intense terracotta color, custom cabinetry, concealed doors, niches, built-in storage, sconces, and a small home office
Plan change Sleeping rooms moved to the quieter rear courtyard side; living spaces face the street
Period elements retained Italian-oak herringbone parquet, vintage cement tiles, stucco details, and cornices

The apartment was photographed by Giulia Benedetta Costa for Architectural Digest in a February 18, 2025 feature by Valentina Raggi. The article is a home-tour feature, not a measured renovation report: it does not publish the hallway’s exact dimensions, construction cost, lighting specifications, energy data, or the model of the wall sconces.

Why the hallway became the star

Most narrow corridors are treated as a problem to minimize. Designers often paint them white, add a mirror, and hope they recede. Here, the opposite decision created a stronger plan. The hallway’s length became a sequence, and every element along that sequence has a job: directing movement, hiding household equipment, displaying objects, or providing a place to work.

Abruzzese describes the initial decision this way: “The clients were unsure what to do with it, but we immediately decided that we couldn’t just ignore it. Instead, we wanted to emphasize its proportions and length, turning it into a sort of promenade.” That approach matters in any home with an awkward passage. A corridor cannot be made wider by paint, but it can be made intentional by giving its length a beginning, middle, and end.

Length becomes an experience

The hallway is organized as a visual journey rather than a blank tunnel. Repeated wall lights establish a rhythm, while color and a curved ceiling draw the eye forward. Built-in elements occupy the edges without turning the passage into a collection of unrelated cupboards. The result is a room-like transition between the public street-facing rooms and the more private rear of the apartment.

Utility is built into the architecture

Storage, doors, and a desk are integrated into the corridor’s composition. The passage therefore earns its floor area every day. It can hold coats, cleaning supplies, laundry equipment, pantry goods, and work materials without requiring freestanding furniture that would narrow the walking route.

The plan: quiet rooms at the rear, social rooms at the street

The renovation substantially reworked the apartment’s circulation. The sleeping area now occupies the rear and overlooks a quieter courtyard, while the living area faces the street. This is more than a decorative treatment. It aligns the apartment’s acoustics and privacy with how the rooms are used: bedrooms benefit from the calmer outlook, and the living room receives the more urban-facing position.

The hallway becomes the connector between those zones. Because it is designed as a destination, the change in plan reads as deliberate rather than as a series of rooms arranged along an inconvenient passage.

Paint, ceiling, and color: making a narrow corridor feel intentional

A powder-white barrel vault

The designers introduced a powder-white barrel vault in the corridor. A curved ceiling changes how light travels across the upper plane and gives the passage a distinct architectural profile. It also prevents the hallway from reading as an ordinary flat-ceilinged strip.

For a comparable project, a vault or shallow curved soffit should be considered only after checking ceiling height, structural conditions, ventilation, fire protection, and access to existing services. A painted curve can suggest the effect at lower complexity, but it will not provide the same shadow line or spatial volume as constructed plasterwork.

Milk white against intense terracotta

The palette pairs milk white with a very intense terracotta red. Abruzzese explains: “We made the hallway more dramatic by creating a barrel vault and playing with a combination of a milk white and a very intense terracotta red. On the floor, we used marble chip tiles, a historical artifact in many Milan apartments, but here we used more contemporary colors.”

The useful lesson is contrast with control. The white keeps the ceiling and selected surfaces luminous; terracotta gives the long axis a recognizable identity. In a smaller or darker home, test large paint samples at morning, afternoon, and artificial-light levels before committing. Saturated red-orange colors can shift dramatically beside warm bulbs, cool daylight, oak, and stone.

Rust-colored cabinetry as a second skin

Custom cabinets are finished in a matte, rust-colored lacquer that relates to the terracotta walls without becoming a glossy feature wall. Matte surfaces reduce reflected glare in a tight passage and are usually more forgiving of small surface irregularities than high-gloss finishes. Use a durable cabinet coating in areas touched frequently, and specify a paint system approved for the substrate rather than applying ordinary wall paint to joinery.

Materials that connect old Milan to new work

The apartment does not treat period character and contemporary intervention as opposites. The living room retains restored Italian-oak herringbone parquet. Two rooms keep parquet, and vintage cement tiles with classic patterns remain part of the historic vocabulary. Surviving stucco details and cornices were carefully restored after later false ceilings had reduced the apartment’s generous proportions.

The hallway floor uses marble-chip tile in MIPA’s Tef design from the Seeds collection. The material is historically familiar in Milanese apartments, while the contemporary color treatment keeps it from becoming a literal period reconstruction. This contrast gives the corridor its own identity without erasing the building’s age.

How to balance restoration and intervention

  • Document original floors, cornices, plaster, and door casings before demolition or sanding.
  • Repair salvageable details before adding new trim; replacement profiles can look noticeably flatter than historic work.
  • Let new paint clarify old geometry rather than covering decorative relief with heavy texture.
  • Use a distinct contemporary material in the hallway when the corridor needs a clear visual role, but keep its color related to adjacent rooms.

Concealed doors and built-in storage

One wall of the open dining and kitchen area contains hidden doors to the laundry, refrigerator, pantry, and oven. In the hallway, custom cabinetry, niches, and concealed doors perform a similar editing function: necessary equipment is present, but it does not interrupt the architectural line.

  • The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
  • The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.

  • Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.

Concealment works best when door gaps, hinges, handles, and ventilation are resolved as part of the design. Appliances still need service clearances; laundry machines need drainage and access; refrigerators require manufacturer-specified ventilation; and pantry doors need enough swing or sliding clearance to avoid blocking the walking route. A flush panel that cannot be opened safely is only visual camouflage, not useful storage.

Storage decisions for a narrow passage

Intervention Useful capacity Effect on the corridor Period-detail risk
Full-height built-in cabinets Highest capacity for coats, cleaning supplies, and appliances Creates a continuous architectural wall and can emphasize length May cover cornices, baseboards, or original doors if not carefully set out
Shallow niches and shelves Moderate capacity for books, objects, and daily items Adds depth and display without taking the full passage width Lower risk when fitted between existing moldings
Freestanding furniture Variable, usually limited by depth Breaks the line and can create pinch points Usually reversible, but may obscure flooring
Concealed utility doors High practical value where equipment is located in the hall Keeps a calm surface and strengthens the promenade effect Requires careful alignment with historic openings and trim

Lighting that stretches the view

A series of wall sconces amplifies the hallway’s sense of depth. The feature does not identify their make or model, so they should not be treated as a specified product. The design principle is the important part: repeated pools of light create a cadence and make the far end of a corridor legible.

The hallway also includes a Mini Glo-Ball pendant by Jasper Morrison for Flos and a Tropico wall lamp in opaline glass and metal by Gabriele and Oscar Buratti for FontanaArte. These named pieces sit within a broader lighting composition rather than carrying the entire effect.

A practical lighting layout

  1. Mark door swings, cabinet fronts, artwork, and the walking path before placing electrical points.
  2. Use repeated wall-light positions where the corridor is long enough to support a rhythm; avoid placing a fixture where it will be struck by a shoulder or cabinet door.
  3. Layer ambient light from the ceiling or pendant with lower or wall-mounted light so the corridor is usable at night.
  4. Choose lamp color and dimming controls after testing the terracotta paint and floor together. Warm light can intensify orange-red paint; cooler light can make it appear dull or brown.
  5. Provide access for replacing lamps and servicing drivers. A dramatic concealed fitting is not practical if maintenance requires removing finished plaster.

The small office: turning circulation into work space

A compact home office is incorporated into the hallway. The design team notes that “Clients increasingly want a dedicated workspace, or even two, in their homes.” A corridor desk can meet that need without sacrificing a bedroom, provided it is treated as a real workstation rather than a decorative shelf.

Requirements for a usable hallway desk

  • Allow enough clear depth for a laptop, writing surface, and comfortable elbow position without reducing the primary walking route to a pinch point.
  • Place outlets and data access where cables can be managed inside the joinery.
  • Provide task lighting that does not create glare on a screen or shine directly into approaching eyes.
  • Use a chair that can tuck fully away, or specify a fold-down surface if the desk is used intermittently.
  • Plan ventilation and heat management for computers, printers, or other equipment inside enclosed cabinetry.

The apartment’s workspace is evidence that a hallway can support concentrated activity, but its exact dimensions and ergonomic clearances are not reported. Measure the proposed location in your own home before ordering cabinetry.

Bathrooms: light, privacy, and a former kitchenette

One shower occupies a former kitchenette area, showing how the renovation reused the existing plan rather than treating every room boundary as fixed. In the guest bathroom, Marazzi Crogiolo Lume tiles line the shower. A glass-block wall separates the two bathroom spaces, admitting light while preserving privacy. Its circular design is described as a tribute to Pierre Chareau’s Maison de Verre.

The lesson for a narrow apartment is strategic borrowing of light. Translucent partitions can brighten an interior zone without creating a fully exposed bathroom. They must still be detailed for waterproofing, cleaning, ventilation, and privacy at the actual viewing angles of the home.

Furniture and fixtures that support the architecture

The living room combines restored herringbone parquet with a 1960s Italian teak shelving unit, a Wassily chair designed by Marcel Breuer for Knoll, an Alanda coffee table by Paolo Piva for B&B Italia, and a Parentesi lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù for Flos. In the kitchen, the dark-green cabinetry has an ivory-colored quartz counter and a 265 adjustable wall lamp by Paolo Rizzatto for Flos.

These objects reinforce the apartment’s broader strategy: a restrained architectural envelope allows selected furniture, color, and lighting to carry personality. The dark green kitchen, ivory counter, terracotta corridor, white vault, oak parquet, and marble-chip floor form a connected palette without making every room identical.

How to apply the hallway strategy in your own home

  1. Measure before choosing a concept. Record clear width, ceiling height, door swings, radiator locations, structural walls, and the position of electrical and plumbing services. The Milan project’s proportions are not published, so do not copy a cabinet depth or ceiling treatment by assumption.
  2. Decide what the hallway must do. Choose the primary job—storage, work, display, circulation, or a combination—and protect the minimum clear route required by your household and local regulations.
  3. Choose one continuous architectural move. This could be a painted ceiling, a single-color cabinet wall, a repeated niche module, or a consistent floor. One strong move usually reads more clearly than several unrelated accents.
  4. Test the paint in context. Sample the wall, ceiling, cabinet finish, floor, and light source together. Record how the color changes during the day.
  5. Coordinate joinery with existing details. Decide whether cabinets stop below cornices, align with door heads, or deliberately conceal selected openings. Draw these junctions before fabrication.
  6. Plan lighting and power at the same time. Sconces, desk outlets, concealed appliances, and maintenance access should be resolved before plastering or painting.
  7. Protect the historic fabric during work. Cover parquet and cement tile, isolate dust from restored plaster, and use compatible repair materials where original stucco or cornices remain.
  8. Finish with durable, repairable surfaces. Hallways receive frequent contact. Specify washable wall paint where appropriate, tough cabinet lacquer, and flooring suited to wheeled loads, wet shoes, and routine cleaning.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using only bright white to make the corridor disappear. White can increase brightness, but it does not provide storage, rhythm, or a destination.
  • Installing cabinets without checking clearance. A deep unit can make two doors conflict or leave an uncomfortable pinch point.
  • Over-lighting the ceiling. A grid of downlights can flatten the long axis and create glare on glossy paint. Repetition at the walls may better express depth.
  • Painting historic details without assessment. Cornices and stucco may need repair, cleaning, or specialist preparation before new color is applied.
  • Copying a color without copying the light conditions. Terracotta that looks balanced in Milan daylight may read much stronger under a different climate, window orientation, or bulb temperature.
  • Calling a decorative niche a home office. A desk needs outlets, task light, cable management, and enough knee and elbow room to be useful.
  • Assuming concealed means inaccessible. Laundry, refrigeration, ovens, and electrical equipment still require service access and ventilation.

What this apartment demonstrates

The strongest idea is not a particular lamp, tile, or paint color. It is the decision to design the hallway as a room with a purpose. A barrel vault gives it a ceiling identity; terracotta and milk white give it a palette; repeated sconces give it rhythm; cabinetry and hidden doors give it utility; and a small office gives the floor area daily value.

At the same time, the renovation preserves the apartment’s historical evidence: parquet, cement tiles, stucco, and cornices. That combination—new work that is clearly contemporary but carefully related to the building—is what allows a narrow passage to become the star without erasing the home around it.
