A marble adding machine adds numbers by turning them into binary inputs and using gravity-driven rockers to perform the addition. Each rocker stores a bit; when a marble reaches a rocker already holding one, the stored marble falls onward as a carry. The mechanism makes the calculation visible, but it is an educational binary adder rather than a general-purpose calculator.

How the machine represents a number
In Matthias Wandel’s wooden design, each rocker represents one binary place. A rocker in its zero position does not hold a marble; in its one position, it traps one. The input number is placed over holes aligned with the bit positions, and a slider opens those holes so the selected marbles can drop into the mechanism. Wandel’s build guide describes this arrangement.

Binary uses powers of two instead of powers of ten. From right to left, the places are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and so on. For example, the binary number 101 represents 5 in decimal: one 4, no 2, and one 1. The marble machine stores those zeroes and ones in the rocker positions.

How a marble performs addition
- The input marbles fall. Releasing the input slider lets marbles at the chosen bit positions fall onto their corresponding rockers.
- An empty rocker stores a one. A marble landing on a rocker in its zero position flips it and is trapped. The bit changes from zero to one.
- An occupied rocker creates a carry. If the rocker is already holding a marble, the incoming marble flips it back to zero and releases the stored marble. That released marble travels to the next more significant place, where it adds one there.
- Carries continue as needed. A carry landing on another occupied rocker can trigger another carry. This is the physical equivalent of carrying in ordinary column addition.
For a simple example, add binary 1 and binary 1. The first input marble reaches the units rocker and changes it from zero to one. The second marble reaches that occupied rocker, flips it back to zero, and releases the stored marble toward the twos place. The final state is binary 10, or decimal 2.
Wandel notes that a carry arrives slightly later than a directly falling input marble, helping prevent the two from colliding at the same hole. The project description calls the device a machine that “does the math using glass marbles.”

How to read the result and reset it
The output slider manages both the result and the reset. Moving it first blocks the output holes and pushes the toggles back to zero, releasing any marbles stored in the rockers into the output path. The marbles can then be released as the result. Return the slider to its ready position before entering another calculation. The output is a sequence of marbles whose positions correspond to the binary result.

The basic operation is binary addition. The six-bit configuration described on Make can also illustrate signed values using two’s-complement interpretation; Wandel gives its representable signed range as −31 to 31. That is an optional way to interpret the bit pattern, not a separate mechanism for ordinary decimal subtraction. The machine’s finite bit positions also mean it is not a general-purpose calculator.

It is most useful as a physical demonstration of binary state and carry: learners can watch a bit change, see a carry move, and observe the output. The 2020 Instruction Manual for the Binary MAMA includes decimal-to-binary exercises and pixel-image puzzles, with activities described for groups of two to four children. The wood design is sensitive to the relationship between the marbles, holes, and rocker geometry. Wandel recommends making and testing a one-bit element first because reliable operation can be difficult to achieve. In his build-specific notes, he used a 11/16-inch drill for alignment holes, warned that a 3/4-inch hole might not align the marbles well, and reported that only about half of the marbles he tried passed through an earlier 5/8-inch hole size. These are observations from his builds, not universal dimensions: test the actual marbles and materials used for your version. Burrs or poorly sized holes can make marbles stick.

How it fits into the history of calculators
This marble machine is a contemporary teaching model, not an office adding machine or a direct ancestor of modern computers. The Computer History Museum traces mechanical calculation designs to the 1600s and notes that producing complex interchangeable parts reliably was important to wider manufacturing. The National Museum of American History describes commercial adding machines developing by the late nineteenth century, including stylus-operated, full-keyboard, and ten-key forms; inexpensive electronic calculators displaced them in the 1970s.
