A 2018 home project associated with New York designer Robert Gross achieved a deliberately light-looking stair balustrade by combining stainless-steel wire, matte-black posts, a rift-cut white-oak handrail and fittings designed to keep adjustment hardware out of sight. Lunna Designs fabricated the posts and handrail locally, then paired a Nutsert Swage Stud on one end of each wire with a ProRig Original Design Flip Toggle System on the other. Stair runs used swivel connectors to follow the changing angle.
This is a historical project case study, not proof that the same components are currently available, interchangeable with other kits or compliant with any New York code edition. It is most useful as a design and specification example for anyone asking how to hide wire-balustrade fittings or manage cable on stairs.

The design problem: a cable railing that did not look like a kit
The brief was unusually specific. The stair needed the openness of a wire balustrade, but the visible fittings had to be restrained. Conventional tensioners, threaded terminals and bulky external hardware can dominate a narrow stair visually, especially when the posts and handrail are intended to read as a clean architectural composition. Robert Gross, Senior Designer at Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership, wanted the wire system to remain visually quiet.
Frank Miano, owner of Lunna Designs, described the fabrication approach this way: “We fabricated the steel posts and wood handrail locally. However, Robert had expressed that he preferred as little visible hardware on the wire systems as possible.” That sentence explains why this was not simply a matter of ordering a complete railing package. The visible architecture was custom-made, while the cable-termination strategy was selected to support the appearance.

The resulting palette combined dark metal and warm timber. Matte-black posts provided the visual structure, while the rift-cut white-oak handrail supplied the graspable top edge. Stainless-steel wire filled the space between posts without creating a solid panel. The contrast was intentional: the posts and handrail were legible objects, but the infill was meant to recede.
What the project actually used
The supplier account identifies three relevant fitting types. Two handled the principal wire terminations; the third addressed the geometry of stairs.
| Component | Role described in the case study | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Nutsert Swage Stud | Used at one end of the stainless-steel wire. | The exact current SKU, cable diameter, alloy specification and installation tool are not stated. |
| ProRig Original Design Flip Toggle System | Used at the other end; the supplier describes it as securing wire to metal posts without adjustment hardware visible on the outside. | Current availability, compatibility with every post section and present installation instructions are not stated. |
| Swivel connectors | Added on stair sections so wire runs could accommodate an angled path. | The connector’s current model, allowable angle and engineering limits are not stated. |
| Locally fabricated posts and handrail | Lunna Designs made the steel posts and wood handrail for this project. | The case study does not describe a complete off-the-shelf kit or provide fabrication drawings. |
The distinction matters when specifying a similar installation. The named fittings were part of a coordinated assembly, not a promise that any stainless wire can be combined with any post, toggle or swivel. Thread form, cable construction, hole preparation, edge distances and the way the post is reinforced all affect whether a fitting is appropriate.
How the concealed-hardware strategy works
One end uses a swage-stud termination
A swage-stud arrangement ends the cable in a fitting that is mechanically secured to the wire. In this project, the Nutsert Swage Stud was the named termination at one end. The case study does not publish the swaging sequence or a load rating, so an installer should obtain the current manufacturer’s procedure rather than infer one from the project photographs or description.

The opposite end uses a flip-toggle connection
The ProRig Original Design Flip Toggle System was selected for the opposite end. The supplier’s description emphasizes the visual benefit: the wire can be secured to a metal post while the adjustment hardware is not exposed on the outside face. That arrangement addresses the designer’s primary complaint about visually bulky alternatives. It does not mean the connection is maintenance-free or universally suitable; it means the visible side of the post can remain cleaner when the post and fitting are designed for one another.
Swivels accommodate stair geometry
Stair cable is not simply a horizontal run repeated at a different height. Each line follows the rake of the stair, and terminations must remain aligned with that direction. The project used swivel connectors with Nutsert Swage Studs on stair sections so the fitting could follow an angled wire run. A swivel is therefore a geometry component, not merely a decorative accessory. Its permitted articulation and load path need to be confirmed for the exact post arrangement.

Why the visual result reads as “streamline”
“Streamline” in this account describes an appearance and fitting approach rather than a universal technical standard. Several decisions work together:
- Limited hardware exposure: the flip-toggle concept keeps the external face of a metal post free of a prominent adjuster.
- Consistent post finish: matte black lets the structural posts read as slender vertical marks instead of shiny mechanical parts.
- Warm handrail contrast: rift-cut white oak gives the hand contact surface a different texture and color from the wire and posts.
- Appropriate stair fittings: swivel connectors prevent the cable termination from fighting the stair angle.
- Local fabrication: posts and handrail were made for the house, allowing dimensions and detailing to be coordinated with the selected fittings.
Robert Gross was quoted as saying the project was “getting a lot of positive comments about the lightness and sleekness of the railing system.” That is a report of the client’s reaction, not an independent performance test or a measured comparison with another railing.

A practical specification workflow for a similar project
The case study is most transferable as a sequence of design decisions. Use the following workflow before purchasing components.
- Define the visual target. Decide which faces of the posts will be visible, whether a fitting may project into a walking path, and how much metal should be seen against the handrail and wall.
- Draw the post and handrail assembly first. Establish post thickness, internal access, handrail height and the location of every cable line. A concealed or recessed fitting requires space that may not be available after fabrication.
- Map every wire run. Separate level sections from stair sections. Record changes in direction, intermediate posts and end conditions. Do not assume a fitting intended for a straight run can articulate on a stair.
- Match the termination to the post material. The named flip-toggle application is described for metal posts. Timber posts may require a different insert or a different category of fitting; a timber-insert stair system is a separate product category, not evidence of interchangeability.
- Confirm cable and fitting compatibility. Obtain the current manufacturer’s cable diameter, construction, material, swage requirements, thread details and allowable tension for the exact components.
- Provide an engineering review. Have the design professional verify guard geometry, anchorage, post stiffness, handrail support and loads for the actual site. The historical account supplies none of these calculations.
- Plan installation access. A concealed fitting can be harder to reach after the post is closed or the handrail is installed. Decide where tensioning, inspection and replacement will occur before fabrication.
- Document replacement parts. Record the fitting names, cable specification and supplier information in the project handover. Specialist components can be difficult to identify later if the original installer is unavailable.
What to compare when evaluating alternatives
The project does not establish that one system is best. It does show which questions matter when comparing a concealed-hardware wire system with another solution.

Historical project scope, cost and location
The supplier’s case study is dated 29 January 2018 and reports a project budget of $24,000 USD. That figure belongs to the described staircase and balustrade project at that time. It is not a current price benchmark, an installed-cost average or a quotation for a new project.
The page labels the location “New Jersey, NY, USA.” Because that wording is ambiguous, it should not be converted into a precise city or jurisdiction. The account identifies the home as a residence for Gross’s parents and names Lunna Designs owner Frank Miano and site foreman Ariel Argueta among the team. Those details establish the project context; they do not establish where a new installation may legally be built.

Code, permitting and engineering limits
Nothing in this historical account demonstrates compliance with New York building requirements. The supplied Australian Building Codes Board material is from the 2016 National Construction Code and describes a limited circumstance in which AS 1657 may be used for certain fixed platforms, walkways, stairways, ladders and attached barriers serving specified spaces. That provision does not establish the rules for this residential project, does not represent the current Australian code and cannot substitute for a New York review.
For a current installation, the responsible design professional and authority having jurisdiction should verify the applicable code edition and site conditions. The review should cover guard geometry, wire spacing, concentrated and distributed loads, post anchorage, substrate, handrail continuity, stair transitions and any required engineering documentation. The case study gives no numerical values for those items and supplies no United States approval package.

Choosing by appearance alone
A fitting that looks small in a photograph may require a substantial recess, backing plate or access hole. Approve a section detail, not just a product image.
Mixing components from different systems
A cable, swage stud, toggle and swivel may each appear dimensionally similar while using different cable constructions, threads or installation methods. Treat the named Nutsert and ProRig components as a coordinated specification unless the manufacturer confirms another combination.

Ignoring the stair transition
Level and raked runs create different alignment and installation problems. Detail the landing, newel and intermediate-post conditions before ordering wire.
Leaving no maintenance route
Even a visually discreet system needs inspection and possible retensioning. Concealment should not make every future repair require destructive removal of the handrail or post finish.
Assuming old documentation is current
The 2018 account identifies product names but not current stock, revised instructions or replacement parts. Confirm present specifications and availability directly with the supplier or manufacturer before committing fabrication.
How the case study should inform a design decision
For a project seeking a quiet, architectural wire railing, the lesson is to design the post, handrail and termination as one assembly. Local fabrication can make the visible work fit the house, while a carefully selected termination can reduce visual clutter. On stairs, articulated connectors must be treated as part of the structural and geometric design rather than added after the cable layout is complete.
The limits are equally important. This was a bespoke 2018 installation with a reported $24,000 budget, not a current kit recommendation, laboratory test or code certificate. Exact SKUs, dimensions, load data and present availability remain to be confirmed for any new project. Use the historical arrangement as a reference for appearance and coordination, then obtain current technical documents and project-specific approval before fabrication.
