A patinated bronze bust gives Dan Mazzarini’s renovated West Village apartment its clearest sense of history. The object is not presented as a documented antique: Mazzarini estimates that it is “probably 70 or 80 years old,” while the maker, seller, title, dimensions and exact date remain unidentified. Architectural Digest’s February 20, 2024 feature on interior designer Dan Mazzarini’s West Village home treats the bust as more than an accessory. It is the object that makes the apartment’s mixture of eras legible. Mazzarini lives there with his partner, Andy, in a renovated home designed around a warm, reflective palette and a deliberate mixture of vintage and contemporary pieces.

Mazzarini encountered the bust while shopping for styling pieces for an installation at the Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead. He says it immediately looked handsome and contemporary despite its aged appearance. He later kept it in storage, then brought it into the apartment during a renovation and placed it in a corner of the dining room. The sequence matters: the sculpture was not bought to complete a preplanned room. Its eventual role emerged when the renovation gave it a setting in which its character could read.
The feature does not identify a sculptor, foundry, seller, title, dimensions or exact composition beyond describing the object as bronze with a patina. Mazzarini’s age estimate should therefore be read as personal observation, not authenticated provenance. The article’s account is best understood as a design story about visual age and contrast, rather than an appraisal.
Mazzarini describes the bust this way: “Sometimes busts feel dated, but this one was contemporary. It’s patinaed and feels old but with a timeless, angular quality.” The tension in that sentence explains why the sculpture works. “Patinaed” supplies evidence of time; “contemporary” keeps the object from feeling like a museum prop; “angular” gives it enough graphic authority to hold its place among modern furniture.
Why the bust feels contemporary instead of nostalgic
Its silhouette has visual authority
A bust is a compact form, but a head and shoulders create an immediate focal point. In this case, the angular silhouette prevents the object from dissolving into background decoration. The patina carries variation, not a single flat color
Patina is doing more than signaling age. A darkened bronze surface can hold brown, green, charcoal and muted metallic notes, depending on the light and the finish. Those shifts make the sculpture relate to several colors in a room without matching any one of them exactly. The result is a bridge between wood, black furniture, framed art and warm wall colors.

The pedestal changes the reading
The bust sits on a black Frank Pedestal designed by Josh Greene for Dowel Furniture. Architectural Digest listed the pedestal at $1,475 in 2024; that was the article’s stated price, not a current quote, and present availability was not verified. Its stripped-back geometry provides a deliberate counterpoint to the sculpture’s accumulated surface. Rather than placing the bust on an ornate plinth that would reinforce its age, Mazzarini uses a contemporary base to make the pairing feel elevated and current.

How the bust fits Mazzarini’s old-and-new method
The sculpture is convincing because it is not an isolated “vintage look.” The apartment repeatedly places objects with different histories beside one another. Mazzarini cites a vintage dining table paired with new art; in the entryway, old and new artwork and frames share space; a contemporary coffee table of his own design sits beside an antique side table; and a 1930s walnut picture frame has been adapted with a new mirror above the fireplace.
These examples establish a pattern: one element supplies age, another supplies freshness, and the room avoids turning either category into a theme set. The bust follows the same logic. Its surface is old-looking, but its base is crisp. Its subject is classical in format, but its faceted, angular character feels graphic. The surrounding furniture does not imitate the sculpture; it gives it room to be distinct.
Mazzarini co-founded Manhattan-based BHDM Design in 2013 and is identified by the feature as the firm’s principal and creative director. The article also says he later founded Archive, which helps clients find one-of-a-kind objects, and that he leads hospitality and commercial projects. Those roles are reported by the 2024 feature; they are not presented here as independently confirmed current titles.
The palette that lets a dark sculpture belong
Mazzarini says he designed the home as “a creamy dreamy box.” That warm, light envelope matters because it gives a dark bust contrast without forcing a high-drama black-and-white scheme. Against creamy walls, the bronze can read as dimensional rather than merely dark. Reflections on the surface remain visible, and the sculpture’s outline stays separate from the background.

He also says, “I always love using black,” calling it “the eyeliner of every room!” In the apartment, black is a fine accent rather than an all-over treatment. The pedestal can therefore echo black details elsewhere while still functioning as the visual punctuation under the bust. If you are painting a room around a similar object, the practical takeaway is to test the sculpture against the proposed wall color at the actual placement, under both daylight and evening light. A color that looks creamy on a sample card may make a dark patina disappear once shadows deepen.

Mazzarini describes the result as “Greenwich Village with a bold, masculine approach.” He also calls it a cleaned-up version of the Ralph Lauren aesthetic that is in his DNA. Those are his descriptions of his own taste, not formal design categories. They point to a room that is warm, tailored and layered, but edited enough that each object remains readable.
What a bronze bust adds to a painted room
History without a period-set interior
A single sculpture can suggest continuity with the past without requiring antique furniture throughout the room. Because the bust is three-dimensional, it introduces shadows and highlights that a framed picture cannot provide. Because it is compact, it does not dictate every other furnishing choice.
A human scale at eye level
Portrait sculpture gives a room a quiet sense of presence. On a pedestal, the face is lifted into the sightline of people entering or sitting nearby. That can make a dining room feel inhabited rather than staged, especially when the rest of the décor is restrained.
A bridge between warm and cool materials
Bronze can connect warm wood, creamy paint and black accents. The patina’s uneven coloration prevents the transition from looking mechanically coordinated. Instead of matching the table or the frame, the bust can repeat small tonal notes across them.

A focal point that rewards movement
Unlike a flat artwork viewed from one primary angle, a bust changes as you walk past it. Side light may reveal a cheek plane or the edge of a shoulder; a different viewpoint may make the profile dominant. Place it where circulation allows those changes to be seen, not directly behind a chair or in a cramped passage.

1. Start with the room’s existing visual age
List the pieces that already carry history: a worn table, an inherited frame, an old mirror or a vintage textile. Then identify what is unmistakably current, such as a new light fixture, a lacquered table or contemporary art. The bust strategy works when the room has both sides. If everything is ornate and old-looking, another aged object may add weight without adding contrast.
2. Choose the sculpture for its form before its backstory
For an unidentified or loosely documented piece, evaluate the silhouette, scale and surface in person or through reliable listing photographs. Look for an outline that remains clear from the room’s main approach. Ask whether the patina has variation and whether the face or shoulders become muddy in low light. Do not assume that an estimated age proves an object is an antique; request maker, provenance and material information when those facts matter to your purchase.
3. Give it a contemporary, stable base
A pedestal should support the sculpture securely, leave enough footprint for its center of gravity and suit the room’s circulation. A simple black or painted base can provide the same type of contrast seen in Mazzarini’s dining room. Measure the bust and the intended stand together, including the total height, before ordering. The article does not publish the bust’s dimensions, so there is no verified scale to copy from the apartment.

In a dining area, the sculpture should be visible above nearby furniture without forcing diners to look sharply upward. In a hallway or living room, stand at the usual entry point and check whether the face is clear at first glance. The ideal height depends on the bust, pedestal and room, not on a universal number.

5. Paint for separation, not camouflage
Use large sample boards or painted sections behind the intended location. Compare a warm off-white, a muted stone, a smoky blue or another color already present in the room, then observe the patina as daylight changes. The goal is enough value contrast to reveal the silhouette while preserving the apartment’s calm, layered feeling. Avoid choosing a wall color solely because it resembles one note in the bronze; a near-match can flatten both surfaces.
6. Edit the surrounding objects
Leave breathing room around the bust. A crowded pedestal, competing mirror or stack of accessories can turn a strong sculpture into visual noise. Let nearby art and furniture provide context without repeating the head-and-shoulders motif. Mazzarini’s examples show that contrast works best when each neighboring piece has a separate identity.
How to shop for a similar patinated bronze bust
The feature does not disclose the exact bust’s maker, seller, model or dimensions, so no online listing can be identified as the same object. A search for “patinated bronze bust” is a reasonable starting keyword, but treat every result as a separate candidate. Compare the evidence supplied by each listing rather than relying on age language or a photograph’s mood.

Care and placement decisions
Before installation, confirm the sculpture’s weight and the pedestal’s load capacity with the seller or manufacturer. Place the stand on a level surface and keep the bust away from a high-traffic edge where a shoulder could be knocked.
