Swiss perfumer Giovanni Sammarco and visual artist Maeva Rosset joined scent and visual art to make “smellscapes”: installations that evoke a place, memory or experience. During a trip to India, they explored traditional fragrance-making in Kannauj and Delhi, including the production of mitti attar and shamama attar.
What is a smellscape?
A smellscape is an olfactory landscape: an artwork in which scent works alongside visual material to create an atmosphere tied to a place or memory. Sammarco makes the scents using perfumery methods; Rosset develops the visual side through photographs, collages or projections.
The scent is not merely an illustration of an image. In their installations, the artists also infused materials with smells—including raw or unconventional ones—so that approaching an object could prompt a sensory response. Smell becomes part of how the viewer encounters the work.

What the artists explored in India
In a 2019 Scroll.in feature, the artists described India as important to fragrance for its traditional techniques as well as its synthetic perfumery. Their journey was their first smellscape research trip outside Switzerland.
Kannauj: mitti attar
The feature reports that the pair arrived in Kannauj in February to observe mitti attar production. It describes clay being baked in a kiln, then steamed in copper cauldrons heated over cow-dung fires; the vapours are collected over oil. The resulting scent is associated with petrichor—the smell after rain—and the article calls Kannauj the “city of perfumes.” This is the feature’s account of what the artists observed, not an independent technical history of the method.

Delhi: shamama attar
In Delhi, the artists reportedly learned about shamama, described in the feature as a dense blend of herb and spice smells extracted through water distillation.
Art scent is not necessarily perfume to wear
The distinction between an installation and a retail fragrance is central to the artists’ approach. Commercial perfume is generally made with wearability in mind; a smellscape scent can instead serve an idea or story, whether or not it would work as a conventional personal fragrance. Sammarco put it this way: “That’s the thing about making scents for a market – they always have to be wearable. But when we work on smellscapes, the scent is free to be what it wants, it is not a product.”

Rosset described smell as a way to introduce someone to something in an unexpected way. The aim is not simply to reproduce a place literally, but to use scent as a route into an association or experience.
Projects that put scent into an artistic setting
The feature identifies Parfumen en Commun as an installation shown in Bangalore in 2018. It also mentions earlier experiments: wood scented with blood, presented at Kunsthalle Basel in 2016, and a 20 ml olfactory self-portrait. These examples show the range of materials and subjects the artists have used; they are not examples of conventional fragrances for sale.

What the feature does—and does not—establish
Sharanya Deepak’s Scroll.in profile, published April 21, 2019, documents the artists’ reported practice and their India fieldwork at that time. It does not establish what Sammarco or Rosset are doing now, identify a current seller of mitti attar, or indicate that either artist endorses a retail product. Mitti attar is a traditional fragrance category discussed in connection with Kannauj, not a commercial version of the duo’s smellscape installations.
