A small coffee shop in Taipei’s XinYi District creates a surprisingly varied experience with a deliberately short materials list. In an 80-square-metre project reported by Azure Magazine in 2022, Phoebe Says Wow Architects combine curved and rectilinear walls, white semi-opaque polycarbonate, and yellow steel framing to accommodate takeaway coffee, roasting, an invite-only café, and occasional public programs. The achievement is not lavish fit-out; it is making each architectural element perform several jobs at once.

The project in brief
The client is Fifteen Steps Workshop, and the design firm is Phoebe Says Wow Architects, co-founded by Phoebe Wen and Shihhwa Hung. The project is situated in Taipei’s XinYi District. Azure Magazine reported the area as 80 square metres in its February 22, 2022 feature; that is the publication’s stated project figure, not an independently verified measurement.
The shop is organized around a useful contradiction. From the street, it is open and quick to approach: a takeout window, a narrow wood counter, and an open-air vestibule handle short visits. Farther inside, the plan becomes more controlled, enclosing a roastery and an invite-only café area. That inner room can host pour-overs, cupping seminars, and lectures on occasion. One compact footprint therefore supports both everyday service and slower, more specialized coffee culture.

The architects’ language is minimal yet vibrant. “Minimal” describes the limited palette and clear geometry; “vibrant” comes largely from the yellow frames and the way daylight moves through the white panels. The design does not rely on a collection of decorative objects to establish identity. It gives a few repeated elements enough responsibility to define the entire place.
Four ingredients carry the visual identity
| Architectural ingredient | What it does spatially | What a visitor perceives |
|---|---|---|
| Curved walls | Soften circulation and distinguish zones without adding another material. | A more fluid route from the public edge toward the café and roastery. |
| Rectilinear walls | Provide clear boundaries for enclosed or service-oriented functions. | Order, alignment, and a sense that each activity has a defined place. |
| White semi-opaque polycarbonate panels | Partition spaces while transmitting and diffusing light. | Brightness and partial privacy rather than either full exposure or a dark solid wall. |
| Yellow steel frames | Hold and outline the panels, making the plan’s geometry legible. | A memorable flash of colour that turns construction lines into graphic identity. |
These ingredients are deliberately repetitive. The same panel logic can separate a room and glow as a light surface; the same steel frame can be structural or simply read as a bright outline; a wall can guide movement while also producing the shop’s distinctive silhouette. Limiting the palette makes differences in shape, opacity, and light easier to notice.
Curves and straight lines share the work
A plan made entirely of straight partitions would be efficient but potentially anonymous. A plan made entirely of curves could become difficult to furnish or operate. Here, curved and rectilinear walls are used together. Straight runs establish practical edges for enclosed functions and counters. Curved portions ease the transition between those edges, giving circulation a sense of movement and preventing the small interior from reading as a stack of boxes.

A clean, linear boundary can signal a service or work zone; a curved edge can slow the eye and suggest a threshold. Because both geometries are built from the same white-and-yellow vocabulary, the plan feels coherent rather than stylistically divided.
Polycarbonate is both screen and light source
The white semi-opaque panels are not transparent windows and not opaque masonry. They reveal brightness and silhouettes while withholding a complete view. That middle condition is useful for a coffee business with different degrees of access. A customer at the frontage can sense activity deeper inside without seeing every roasting or preparation detail. Someone admitted to the café area receives separation without losing the glow of the shop.

Diffusion is equally important. Instead of allowing daylight to arrive as a hard beam through a clear opening, the panels spread it across their surfaces. The result is a luminous background that makes the partitions visually active. The architects, as reported by Azure, state that the panels diffuse light and reduce reliance on air conditioning. That is a design intention and an attributed claim, not a measured energy-performance result; the feature supplies no consumption data or independent environmental study.
Yellow frames turn construction into signage
The steel frames provide the strongest colour signal in the project. Against the white panels, yellow outlines announce corners, openings, and changes in direction. A conventional frame is easy to ignore; this one is made conspicuous, so the practical act of holding a panel becomes part of the brand language.
Because the colour is concentrated in a repeated system rather than scattered across furniture and merchandise, it remains disciplined. The shop can stay visually spare while still being recognizable from outside. The frames also make the geometry readable at a glance: straight segments look precise, while curved segments become graphic arcs.
The street edge is designed for two speeds
The facade solves the most immediate operational problem: many coffee customers want a drink quickly, while others are willing to stay. A takeout window handles the first group without requiring entry into the deeper plan. Beside it, a slender wood counter occupies an open-air vestibule. This creates a small intermediate zone rather than an abrupt boundary between pavement and interior.
Steps and a landing provide a place to sit. They are not described as a full outdoor terrace; they are a modest extension of the threshold that lets the facade support lingering as well as exchange. Someone waiting for a drink can occupy the edge without blocking the window, and someone passing by can read the shop as an inhabitable frontage rather than a sealed box.

Takeaway without sacrificing welcome
Separating the service point from the invite-only room protects both experiences. A takeaway customer can approach, order, collect a drink, and leave without crossing a private threshold. At the same time, the vestibule, wood counter, and landing give the public side enough character to feel intentional rather than merely transactional.

A carefully placed ledge, step, or landing can absorb short stays while keeping the main circulation clear. The project uses architecture, not extra signage, to distinguish the quick route from the slower one.
Inside, enclosure supports craft and controlled access
The interior plan includes an enclosed roastery and an invite-only café area. Those functions need different kinds of separation. Roasting is a production activity with equipment, heat, aromas, and work routines. An invitation-only room needs a clear threshold and a quieter atmosphere. The plan gives both functions enclosure while preserving the visual continuity created by the translucent panels and yellow frames.
Partial visibility matters here. The panels can hint at activity without turning every work process into a display. A passerby may perceive movement or a change in light, while the people inside retain a degree of concentration and privacy. This is a more nuanced approach than either putting the roastery completely on show or hiding it behind an unarticulated back wall.
A room that can change audience
The café area is not limited to seated drinking. The feature says that pour-overs, cupping seminars, and lecture programs take place there on occasion. That wording indicates intermittent programming, not a daily schedule or a guaranteed public event calendar. The room therefore has to support different group sizes and levels of formality without losing its identity as a café.

- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
Minimal architecture helps with that changeover. A restrained backdrop can support a demonstration, a conversation, or a focused tasting without competing with the activity. The translucent partitions establish atmosphere while leaving the program itself flexible. The space reads as specialized when invited guests are present, but its basic ingredients remain those of the wider shop.

The project’s economy is not simply a matter of using fewer finishes. Each choice links several decisions that are often handled separately.
- Privacy and daylight: Semi-opaque panels screen views while allowing light to pass through, so a private boundary does not automatically become a dark one.
- Structure and identity: Yellow steel frames hold the panels and simultaneously provide the strongest visual signature.
- Circulation and character: Curved walls guide movement and soften thresholds; rectilinear walls keep service and enclosed functions orderly.
- Service and social space: The takeout window manages speed, while the vestibule, counter, steps, and landing make room for brief pauses.
- Everyday use and special events: The enclosed café can host normal invited visits as well as occasional pour-overs, cupping seminars, and lectures.
Because these relationships are visible, the interior does not need a separate decorative layer to explain itself. Visitors can understand the shop through light, edges, openings, and the sequence from street to inner room.
A visitor’s sequence through the architecture
- Approach the frontage. The takeout window presents the fastest point of contact and makes the shop legible from the street.
- Enter the open-air vestibule. The slender wood counter marks an intermediate zone between public pavement and the more enclosed interior.
- Choose whether to pause. Steps and a landing provide a small place to sit without turning the facade into a large terrace.
- Read the partitions. White semi-opaque panels reveal light and hints of activity while limiting direct views.
- Follow the geometry inward. Curved and straight walls distinguish movement, work areas, and thresholds.
- Arrive at the controlled interior. The roastery and invite-only café occupy the deeper plan, where specialized coffee activity can occur away from the quick-service edge.
This sequence is a practical form of wayfinding. The building does not need to announce every function with a sign because changes in openness, geometry, and material treatment provide cues.

What this approach teaches small hospitality projects
Start with roles, not a shopping list
A compact café benefits from identifying the jobs a single element must perform before selecting finishes. In this project, the panel is not merely a wall covering: it divides, filters views, carries light, and contributes to the atmosphere. The frame is not merely support: it organizes the composition and supplies colour. Defining those roles first prevents a small palette from becoming monotonous.

Design the threshold as a room
The open-air vestibule demonstrates that the edge of a shop can be useful space. A narrow counter and a place to sit can support waiting, conversation, and visual connection without demanding a large footprint. Treating the threshold as a room also helps separate quick transactions from activities that require concentration.
Use contrast sparingly but decisively
The project’s visual energy comes from one strong frame colour against a restrained field of white panels and wood. A limited contrast is easier to repeat consistently across a small interior than a collection of unrelated accents. It also gives the shop a recognizable image without overwhelming the coffee-making activity.
Let partial visibility do more than full transparency
Translucent partitions can communicate that a place is active while preserving boundaries. For cafés that combine production, private hospitality, and public-facing service, this middle level of visibility can be more useful than either a completely open plan or a series of opaque rooms.

What the published feature does—and does not—establish
The documented facts come from Elizabeth Pagliacolo’s feature in Azure Magazine, published February 22, 2022. It identifies the client, architects, location district, reported 80-square-metre area, principal materials, facade arrangement, interior functions, and occasional programming. It does not establish a street address, current opening status, operating hours, menu, present-day visitor policy, or whether the programs continue.
It also does not provide construction specifications for the polycarbonate panels or steel frames, visitor counts, financial results, measured reductions in air-conditioning use, or a broader statistical comparison with other cafés. Those details should not be inferred from the visual description. What can be concluded is more precise: a small Taipei coffee shop achieves a distinct identity by assigning multiple spatial and experiential tasks to a few carefully coordinated architectural moves.
