At Queensland’s Greenbank Training Area, about 50 km from Brisbane, ACO says its sloped PowerDrain grated channel and CS surface ducting were selected for a Defence vehicle-washing facility. The design brief combined two jobs: keep high-pressure air and water services continuously accessible while carrying wash-down water, silt and mud toward a silt basket. That is the documented design intent. The published case study does not provide a hydraulic test, channel dimensions, grate rating or other evidence that would quantify the installed system’s drainage performance.

The project ACO describes
The installation forms part of Defence’s Enhanced Land Forces (ELF) Project at Greenbank Training Area in Queensland. ACO’s account concerns a vehicle wash, not a drainage upgrade covering the entire training area or base. Vehicles entering such a facility bring soil and mud onto a hard-wearing wash surface, where large volumes of water must leave without obstructing vehicle movements or maintenance work.
The case study identifies the selected drainage and service-access products as a sloped PowerDrain grated channel and CS surface ducting. It does not name the owner’s contractor, installation date, run length, channel width, outlet arrangement, grate model, load class, basket model or project cost. Those omissions matter when the installation is being used as a reference for a new specification.

Why this wash facility needed more than a drain
Continuous access to service lines
Wash equipment required high-pressure air and water lines. Operators needed to maintain those services and move nozzles around vehicles without losing access to the connections. A surface-drain layout therefore had to coexist with service distribution rather than treating drainage as an isolated strip of concrete.
Controlled removal of mud and silt
The design brief also called for wash water to carry loosened silt and mud toward a silt basket. Capturing that material before it reaches downstream pipework or an outlet pit makes cleanout possible at a defined location. ACO’s case study states that designers wanted “efficient drainage where silt and mud could be easily directed to a silt basket.” It does not state the basket’s size, screening arrangement, cleaning interval or disposal method.
Vehicle movement and a rugged environment
A vehicle wash at a military training site must tolerate traffic, wet surfaces and abrasive debris. The available description supports calling the selected arrangement a heavy-duty sloped grated trench-drain solution, but it does not establish the exact traffic loading or a certified rating for the Greenbank installation.
How a sloped grated channel performs these functions
Built-in fall moves water to the outlet
A sloped channel has a designed longitudinal fall, so water entering through the grate is directed toward the outlet rather than relying only on the surrounding slab to provide a fall. In a wash bay, that helps the designer establish a predictable collection line and a known point for downstream treatment or discharge. The actual slope, invert levels and outlet position at Greenbank are not published.

The grate keeps the channel accessible
The grate forms the walking and driving surface over the channel while allowing wash water to enter. Its intake opening, free area and arrangement influence how quickly water can leave the slab. Grate selection also has to reflect the traffic and wheel paths expected at the site. No Greenbank grate type, intake capacity or load class is identified in the case study.
The ducting keeps services reachable
ACO names CS surface ducting as part of the solution. In practical terms, a service duct provides a route for air and water lines that can be reached for maintenance and nozzle repositioning. The published material does not provide the duct dimensions, covers, access points, pipe contents or separation details, so those items must be established from project drawings rather than inferred from the product name.
The basket concentrates coarse contamination
Directing sediment to a basket creates a deliberate maintenance point. Operators can remove accumulated solids from that point instead of allowing mud to settle unpredictably along the entire drainage run. The case study confirms the intended direction of silt and mud but gives no measured capture efficiency or maintenance schedule.

Product-family information, kept separate from the site record
An Architecture & Design product article dated 30 October 2011 describes PowerDrain as a heavy-duty sloped trench drain for rugged surface-drainage applications, including military bases. It lists polymer-concrete channels, cast-in ductile-iron edge rails and a boltless grate-locking system as product features. Those statements describe the product family; they do not prove that every feature, material or grate configuration was used at Greenbank.

The same article includes a comparative material-strength claim about polymer concrete. Because it does not provide a test method or identify the result as a Greenbank measurement, that claim should not be used as evidence of this facility’s installed performance. A project specification should rely on the selected product’s current technical documentation and the engineer’s structural design.
Installation conditions that affect the result
ACO’s general installation guidance requires the correct channel and grate, an outlet planned for its position and a concrete surround. It states that a minimum 100 mm concrete surround applies for Load Class A in the cited guidance. That dimension and class are general instructions, not a Greenbank specification. Loading, slab design, soil support and ground conditions can require a different excavation and surround arrangement.

- Expected wheel loads, turning movements and any concentrated loads at channel edges.
- Slab falls feeding the grate, channel invert levels and the location of the outlet or pit.
- Concrete surround, reinforcement, joints and interfaces with the wash-bay slab.
- Safe access for removing the grate and emptying the silt basket.
- Protection and access for high-pressure air and water lines in the CS ducting.
- Discharge, pretreatment and environmental requirements applicable to wash water and sediment.
Choosing a grate or surround by appearance alone can leave the channel under-supported, inaccessible or mismatched to the traffic. The case study supplies no evidence that any particular class or dimension was used at Greenbank.

How hydraulic sizing should be approached
ACO says it offers hydraulic channel-sizing recommendations and grate recommendations based on intake capacities measured experimentally at the University of New South Wales. That service can help translate rainfall, wash flows, catchment area, slab falls and outlet constraints into a channel and grate selection. It is a design-support offering, not a published calculation for this Defence facility.
A project team seeking a comparable design should provide:
- The wash equipment’s maximum simultaneous flow and any hose or pressure-washer discharge.
- The area draining to each channel and the intended slab gradients.
- Rainfall assumptions where the wash bay is exposed or partially open.
- Allowable water depth and the consequences of temporary ponding around vehicles.
- Debris characteristics, including the expected quantity and particle size of mud and silt.
- The outlet level, downstream pipe capacity and any treatment or isolation requirement.
The resulting calculation should identify the selected channel, grate intake, slope, outlet and design flow. None of those numerical results is published for Greenbank, so “efficient” should be read as a description of the design objective rather than a measured site result.

Maintenance and verification after construction
A sloped channel cannot eliminate maintenance. Mud can accumulate at the basket, beneath the grate or at low-flow areas, while pressure-washing can move debris faster than the outlet system can accept it. The facility operator should document a safe grate-removal method, basket handling, sediment disposal and inspection of the ducting access points. The sources do not state how often Greenbank performs any of these tasks.
Commissioning should check the actual installation rather than relying on a product description. A practical record can include a visual inspection of falls and joints, a controlled flow observation, confirmation that water reaches the intended basket, and verification that service covers and nozzles remain accessible. Any such test would be a project record; no result is reported in the published case study.

It establishes a clear design response: a Defence vehicle wash needed both maintainable high-pressure services and a way to move wash water and sediment to a defined collection point, and ACO says the PowerDrain sloped grated channel with CS surface ducting met that brief. It does not establish a universal solution for every military wash bay, a particular hydraulic capacity, a load rating, a maintenance interval or a measured reduction in ponding or sediment migration.
For professionals using the project as a reference, the useful lesson is the coordination of drainage, service access and sediment handling at the planning stage. The dimensions, classes, outlet details and calculations still have to be designed for the next site’s flows, traffic, ground and operating procedures.
