The events venue above Sydney’s Pyrmont casino was made possible by a carefully limited structural intervention, not by “lightweight steel” alone. The project team investigated the existing building, abandoned an initial steel box-truss idea, and developed a faceted, triangulated skeletal frame that could transfer loads through a small number of supports. Prefabricated members were delivered just in time, bolted on site and installed in a sequence that allowed casino operations to continue below.

The project was known as The Star Event Centre when it was reported in 2014. The venue’s current website calls it Sydney Event Centre and identifies Foundation Theatres as operator. Its construction illustrates how structural design, logistics, architecture and venue programming have to be solved together when a large public building is added above an occupied complex.

The venue sits above the existing casino complex in Sydney’s Pyrmont precinct. Rather than demolishing the casino or closing it for a major rebuild, the project placed a new event volume over the operating building. Architecture & Design described the 2014 project as a 3,000-seat events centre, while the current venue site uses the name Sydney Event Centre.
#1 Best Overall
The building had to be structurally independent enough to span the casino’s existing layout, yet connected to a structure that was not designed originally to carry a new event hall of this scale. That made the supporting columns, footings, transfer beams and construction sequence more important than the steel tonnage alone.
Why adding a venue above an operating casino is difficult
An event hall introduces substantial permanent and moving loads: the steel frame and roof, floors, glazing, acoustic assemblies, mechanical equipment, crowds, staging and temporary concert equipment. Those loads must reach foundations through a building whose columns and footings already support the casino.
Access and tolerance are equally restrictive. A casino cannot simply be treated as an empty construction site. Deliveries, lifting operations, noise, welding fumes, fire protection and temporary closures have to be coordinated around visitors, staff, gaming areas and existing services. Storage space on the site was limited, according to the Australian Steel Institute case study, so material could not be stockpiled conveniently and installed whenever a crew was ready.

These constraints explain why the project focused on reducing the number of existing supports that needed strengthening, limiting work at the occupied building and moving as much fabrication as possible away from the site.
From a box truss to a faceted skeletal frame
The project account says the team first investigated a steel box-truss solution. After examining loads and structural efficiencies, it moved to a faceted, triangulated skeletal steel frame. The change was a response to the actual support and anchoring conditions rather than a stylistic preference.
| Design stage | Documented characteristics | Why it mattered on this site |
|---|---|---|
| Initial concept | Steel box-truss solution | Investigated before the team understood the most efficient response to the existing loads and anchoring constraints. |
| Developed solution | Faceted, triangulated skeletal steel frame | Created an efficient structural box with fewer concentrated support locations and geometry that could be coordinated with the envelope. |
Triangulation gives a frame a stable load path through repeated braced elements. In this project, the faceted geometry also allowed the steel and the glass skin to read as one system. The sources do not establish that the final frame was universally cheaper or safer than every alternative; they report that it reduced strengthening needs and disruption for this particular building.
How the loads were transferred into the casino structure
Anchoring to the existing building was constrained. The Australian Steel Institute describes the completed work as a “steel structural box” supported essentially on eight columns. The 2014 Architecture & Design account gives a more detailed description: the braced frame was supported on eight existing columns and two new columns positioned between post-tensioned transfer beams.

Those descriptions should not be collapsed into one precise support count. They may be describing the same structural arrangement at different levels of detail, but each source uses its own wording. The consistent point is that the design concentrated support into a small number of locations rather than adding a forest of new columns through the casino.
The Australian Steel Institute says steel framing minimized the number of columns and footings requiring strengthening. That is the central engineering advantage documented for the project. Fewer interventions meant less work inside or around occupied areas, while transfer beams and the selected support points carried the new frame’s reactions into the existing structure.
Post-tensioned transfer beams are especially significant in the project description because they allow loads to be collected and redirected where new supports can be placed. The available accounts do not provide member sizes, tendon forces, connection capacities or foundation calculations, so those details cannot be inferred from the published project summary.

What “lightweight steel frame” means here
The phrase in the original headline is a project description, not a complete engineering explanation. Steel can provide high strength with relatively slender members, and a triangulated frame can span between supports without filling the plan with columns. That combination helped the team limit strengthening and preserve the casino’s usable space.

However, the finished venue still imposed major loads. The frame carried a roof, floors, glazing, acoustic and thermal layers, building services and event occupancy. Calling it lightweight does not mean the building was lightly loaded, nor that steel alone solved the problem. The documented strategy combined structural efficiency, carefully selected supports, prefabrication and sequencing.
How construction was organized while the casino stayed open
The construction method treated the casino as a live site. The project account and industry case study describe a sequence designed to reduce hot work, deliveries and uncontrolled activity around operations.
- Investigate the existing structure. The team examined available load paths, column locations, footings and anchoring constraints before fixing the new frame. This investigation led away from the initial box-truss concept.
- Break the frame into manufacturable pieces. Members and repeated assemblies were prefabricated away from the casino wherever practical. Prefabrication improved dimensional control and reduced the amount of cutting, fitting and welding required in the occupied complex.
- Plan deliveries around installation windows. The Australian Steel Institute reports just-in-time delivery because storage was limited. Steel arrived close to the time it was needed rather than occupying scarce space on the site.
- Erect in a controlled sequence. Installation was sequenced so completed portions of the structural box could provide stability while later pieces were added. The published case study emphasizes coordinated sequencing rather than an unrestricted, open-ended erection operation.
- Use bolted site connections where possible. The project account says prefabrication and site bolting reduced on-site welding. Less welding meant fewer hot-work permits, sparks, fumes and interruptions near casino operations.
- Coordinate the enclosure and services with the frame. The faceted glass envelope, roof build-up, acoustics and building systems had to follow the steel geometry. Treating these packages as a coordinated sequence prevented the frame from becoming an obstacle to the venue’s interior requirements.
This method did not eliminate disruption. It managed disruption by moving work off site, limiting storage and hot work, and aligning deliveries and lifts with the structural sequence. The project article characterizes the approach as minimizing disruption and costs; the steel institute case study specifically attributes reduced strengthening requirements to the steel framing.
Why the faceted geometry served more than appearance
The steel frame’s facets were expressed through the building envelope. The project sources describe a faceted glass skin that echoed the steel geometry and could be backlit. This made the structural system legible from outside while giving the venue a distinctive nighttime presence.
The design team described its approach this way: “The honest expression of the skeletal frame and skin led to a thematic approach to the majority of the design.” The same team said, “Efficiency and repetitiveness replaced superficiality and the decorative, prefabrication and pre-assembly were preferred where possible over bespoke detailing. Materials had to perform duplicate and triplicate roles, such as acoustic, thermal and visual performance.”
Those statements explain why the frame, glass, acoustic treatment and thermal enclosure were developed together. Repetition made prefabrication more practical; the same surfaces could contribute to more than one building requirement; and the geometry became part of the venue’s identity rather than a structure hidden behind a separate decorative façade.

The venue was designed for several operating modes rather than one permanent seating arrangement. Fitzpatrick + Partners lists capacities of approximately 4,000 patrons in concert mode, 1,500 in ballroom mode and 1,300 in conference or business mode. The firm also describes an approximately four-hour turnaround between functions.
| Configuration | Capacity published by Fitzpatrick + Partners | Operational purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Concert mode | 4,000 patrons | Large standing or seated live-event arrangement. |
| Ballroom mode | 1,500 patrons | Dining, gala or formal event layout. |
| Conference/business mode | 1,300 patrons | Meetings, presentations and business events. |
These are configuration-specific figures from the architect, not a single universal seating count. Architecture & Design’s 2014 report used a generic 3,000-seat description, so the numbers should be quoted with their source and mode instead of treated as contradictory seating plans.
A rapid changeover requirement affects structure and services. A room that can move from a concert to a ballroom or conference setup needs clear spans, accessible rigging and service zones, robust floor loading provisions and layouts that crews can reset quickly. The published sources do not provide detailed rigging loads or floor-load values, but they do show that operational flexibility was a design objective alongside structural efficiency.
Published project figures, and why they differ
Several headline figures appear in the project coverage. They are not directly interchangeable because the sources use different descriptions and scopes.
| Figure | Source and wording |
|---|---|
| 2,400 square metres | Architecture & Design (2014), describing the enclosed area. |
| 7,800 square metres | Australian Steel Institute, describing the project’s area in its steel case study. |
| 16 metres of clear internal height | Architecture & Design (2014). |
| 16 metres above the casino roof | Australian Steel Institute, describing the steel structure’s height relationship. |
| 800 tonnes of structural steel | Australian Steel Institute. |
| $100 million building | Architecture & Design (2014). |
| $80 million complex | Australian Steel Institute. |
| $870 million redevelopment | Architecture & Design (2014). |
The sources do not reconcile the area or cost differences. The 2,400-square-metre enclosed-area figure may describe a different boundary from the 7,800-square-metre figure, and clear internal height is not necessarily the same measurement as height above the roof. Likewise, a building cost and a complex cost can use different scopes. Reporting each figure with its publisher is more accurate than creating a single blended total.
What the project demonstrates for live-site building
- Start with the existing structure. The available columns, beams, transfer elements and foundations determine which architectural ideas are practical.
- Concentrate support deliberately. A small number of strengthened or new support locations can be less disruptive than many distributed interventions.
- Use geometry as an engineering tool. Faceted triangulation was selected after load and efficiency investigations, then carried through to the envelope.
- Move precision work off site. Prefabrication and pre-assembly reduce welding, cutting and fitting in a constrained occupied building.
- Deliver just in time. Limited storage makes logistics part of structural planning, not a separate contractor concern.
- Design for the venue’s operating cycle. Multiple event modes and rapid turnover affect spans, services, acoustics, access and maintenance.
The lesson is not that any casino, hotel or existing roof can accept a steel event hall. It is that a project of this type succeeds when structural assessment, connection design, fabrication, lifting, fire and acoustic coordination, and operations planning are treated as one problem.

The project-era name was The Star Event Centre. The current venue website uses Sydney Event Centre and identifies Foundation Theatres as operator. The Star Entertainment Group’s announcement index lists completion of the divestment of Sydney Event Centre assets in 2025. Historical construction descriptions therefore retain the original project name, while current venue references should use Sydney Event Centre unless a document is specifically discussing the earlier ownership or development period.
Bottom line
The events centre could be built above an operating casino because the team combined a concentrated, efficient steel support system with disciplined construction logistics. The final faceted, triangulated frame reduced the number of existing columns and footings needing strengthening, while prefabrication, bolted assembly, just-in-time delivery and sequenced installation limited disruption below. “Lightweight” describes one advantage of the steel strategy; the project’s feasibility came from the entire coordinated structural and construction approach.
