Kristi Linauer’s 2010 makeover turned a Goodwill bedside table into a bright yellow accent for Bailey’s room. Her reported sequence was straightforward: sand the rough and flat areas, hand-finish the grooves, apply several coats of primer, spray on Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch in Warm Yellow, and protect the color with two coats of high-gloss lacquer spray. She kept the original hardware and refreshed it with lacquer rather than replacing it.

This is a historical personal project account, not a tested product review. The table’s model and underlying material were not identified, and the post does not provide dimensions, cost, coverage, drying times, or measured durability results. The useful lesson is the order of operations and the way the finish was handled—not a promise that every old table will behave identically.

The project began with a bedside table Linauer bought at Goodwill for Bailey’s room. It was intended to replace a small silver table beside the bed. The original post was dated October 6, 2010, with an October 6, 2012 date line also shown on the page, so the makeover should be read as a period personal project rather than a current product review.

Linauer described the yellow as “bright and cheery, without looking fluorescent.” The high-gloss lacquer supplied the youthful, modern appearance she wanted. No before-and-after measurements or controlled comparisons were reported, so the visual description is her own assessment of this one table.
What the makeover process actually included
Although the finished photograph may make the change look like a simple color swap, the account identifies four separate finishing stages: abrasion, priming, color, and clear topcoat. Hardware was treated as its own small finishing job. Keeping those stages separate helps explain why the yellow looked even and why the details remained visible.
1. Sand the broad, flat surfaces
Linauer used an electric sander on the table’s flat surfaces. Her stated purposes were to remove rough areas and to give the surface “tooth”—a texture that would help the new coating grip. The post does not identify the sander model, abrasive grade, number of passes, or the table’s underlying material. Those omissions matter: a painted wood surface, veneer, laminate, or another substrate can each react differently to aggressive sanding.

For a recreation, inspect the piece before choosing how hard to sand. The documented project confirms only that the flat sections were worked with an electric sander until rough areas were addressed and the surface was ready for primer. It does not establish that every old finish should be stripped to bare material.

2. Finish grooves and details by hand
The electric sander could not reach the table’s grooves and decorative details, so Linauer finished those areas by hand. This is why the process was not entirely machine-driven: the broad faces received fast, even abrasion, while the shaped parts required controlled hand work.
She later wrote, “I really need to invest in a detail sander!!” That sentence is a wish for a tool that would make detailed sanding easier, not evidence that a detail sander was used on this table. If you use one on a future project, treat it as an optional tool for access and control, not as part of the documented equipment list for Bailey’s table.
3. Remove sanding dust before coating
A reader asked whether sanding dust should be wiped away with a dry cloth or vacuumed. Linauer replied that her favorite method was brushing the dust off with a dry paint brush because the bristles could reach cracks and crevices. This is her project advice recorded in the comments, not a controlled comparison of brushes, vacuums, and cloths.
The practical implication is simple: do not leave visible sanding debris in recesses before priming. Use the dust-removal method you can perform thoroughly on the particular shape, and inspect the grooves rather than assuming a pass over the flat top has cleaned the whole table.

Why primer was especially important under yellow paint
Linauer applied a couple of coats of primer and identified the primer brand she had started using as Rust-Oleum. Her specific warning concerned coverage: where the original finish showed through, she found that the yellow did not cover well. She therefore advised making sure the piece was well coated in primer before applying yellow.
This observation belongs to this project. It was not a controlled test of primer brands, coat counts, or color opacity. The post does not specify the exact primer variant, the interval between coats, or the surface on which it was applied. Product formulations and availability can also change over time.
What the sequence does establish is the reason for the primer stage: it created a more uniform base so the Warm Yellow color did not have to hide patches of the old finish by itself. If a reproduction shows dark or uneven areas after priming, that is a signal to assess coverage before moving to color rather than assuming the yellow will erase the variation.

The color coat was Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch in Warm Yellow, applied as spray paint. Linauer selected it because it looked bright and cheerful without appearing fluorescent. The account does not state how many color coats were used, how much paint was consumed, the spray distance, or the drying time.

Those missing details prevent a precise formula for another table. The reliable part is the relationship between the stages: the yellow followed a well-covered primer layer. When recreating the look, keep the color decision separate from assumptions about coverage, sheen, or compatibility. Confirm the product label for the surface you are coating and follow its application and recoat directions; the 2010 account cannot substitute for current instructions.
Because the table’s substrate and original finish were not identified, the post does not establish that Warm Yellow will look or adhere the same way on every bedside table. The color description is visual and personal, while the process order is the transferable lesson.

Linauer kept the table’s original hardware and original hardware finish. She added a coat of lacquer to the hardware to brighten it. No replacement pulls, knobs, or new metal finish were reported.

This choice preserved the table’s identity while bringing the hardware into the refreshed scheme. It also means the makeover was not a complete hardware redesign: the visual change came primarily from the yellow body and the high-gloss clear finish. Since the metal type, existing coating, and lacquer variant were not identified, the account cannot establish how the treatment will perform on different hardware materials.

Sealing the color with high-gloss lacquer
After the color work, Linauer applied two coats of high-gloss lacquer spray. She chose that finish to create the youthful, modern appearance she wanted. The post names high-gloss lacquer spray but does not give a product variant, drying interval, film thickness, or durability test.
In the documented sequence, lacquer served two roles: it was the final clear finish on the painted table and it was also used to brighten the retained hardware. Do not read the two-coat count as a universal specification for every lacquer or surface. Treat it as the number reported for this project, then use the current label’s compatibility, ventilation, recoat, and curing directions when working on your own piece.
A faithful step-by-step reconstruction
- Choose and inspect the table. Start with a secondhand bedside table similar in function, while recognizing that Bailey’s table’s model and base material were not identified.
- Sand the flat surfaces. Use an electric sander to address rough areas and create the “tooth” Linauer wanted for the new coating.
- Hand-sand the details. Work the grooves and shaped sections that the electric sander cannot reach. A detail sander was not used in the reported project; Linauer only said she wished she had one.
- Brush away dust. Linauer’s preferred method was a dry paint brush, chosen because it could reach cracks and crevices. Inspect recesses before coating.
- Prime thoroughly. Apply a couple of coats of primer. Linauer emphasized complete coverage because exposed original finish showed through the yellow in places.
- Spray the color. Apply Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Warm Yellow, the color named in the account. The number of color coats and drying times were not reported.
- Finish the hardware. Keep the original hardware and add lacquer to brighten it, as Linauer did.
- Apply the clear coat. Finish the table with two coats of high-gloss lacquer spray, following the current product directions for your own materials.
- Evaluate the result as a personal makeover. The stated outcome was a bright, cheery yellow table with a youthful, modern gloss—not a measured durability or performance result.
What this project does—and does not—tell you
Established by the account
- The table came from Goodwill and was intended for Bailey’s room.
- Flat areas were sanded with an electric sander; details were finished by hand.
- Dust was brushed away with a dry paint brush, according to Linauer’s comment.
- A couple of coats of primer preceded the yellow spray paint.
- The color was Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Warm Yellow.
- Two coats of high-gloss lacquer spray completed the table.
- The original hardware was retained and lacquered rather than replaced.
Not established by the account
- The table’s dimensions, model, construction, or underlying material.
- The purchase price, total project cost, paint coverage, or quantity used.
- Specific sanding-grit numbers, spray distance, coat thickness, drying times, or cure times.
- A controlled comparison of dust-removal methods.
- A measured test of adhesion, scratch resistance, water resistance, or long-term durability.
- Whether the same products or formulations remain available unchanged today.
These boundaries are important when using the makeover as inspiration. It documents one successful-looking personal project, not a universal specification for refinishing every bedside table.
Decisions to make when adapting the idea
If you apply the concept to another piece, the first decision is whether the existing finish is sound enough to prepare or whether it needs more extensive removal. The original account does not answer that question because the table’s material and finish were not identified. Next, decide how much detail is present: broad, flat furniture favors an electric sander for the initial work, while grooves still require hand access.
Then assess the visual contrast between the old finish and the chosen yellow. Linauer’s warning was that visible original finish could show through Warm Yellow, which is why she stressed thorough primer coverage. Finally, decide whether a high-gloss clear coat fits the look and use of your piece. Her goal was a youthful, modern finish; another room or furniture style may call for a different appearance, but that would be a new design decision rather than part of the documented makeover.
Why the before-and-after remains useful
The value of Bailey’s table makeover is not a hidden recipe or a tested product ranking. It is a clear example of sequencing: create a sound surface, reach the details, remove dust, establish an even primer base, add a deliberate color, and protect the result with a clear finish. It also shows that a dramatic change does not require replacing every component; retaining and brightening the original hardware kept the project tied to the table it started with.
Used with those limits in mind, the account gives a practical visual brief for a similar transformation while leaving the material-specific and product-specific decisions to the furniture in front of you.
