Westcare Early Learning Centre in Port Adelaide uses a coordinated ceiling, acoustic-panel and upholstery palette to make a large, open childcare setting feel organised and durable. Baresque says it was engaged early to address the acoustic demands of the centre’s open spaces. Its Zintra Box Baffles Random, plain acoustic panels and upholstery fabrics were selected not only as finishes, but also as part of the visual zoning and furniture scheme.
The project documentation describes intended functions and named products. It does not publish post-installation reverberation measurements, noise-level data or independently measured effects on children’s learning. That distinction matters when interpreting what the Westcare fit-out demonstrates.

What Westcare ELC is, and where the project sits
Westcare ELC is a purpose-built early learning centre at U2/13 College Street, Port Adelaide, South Australia. Westcare’s own description says it serves children from 6 weeks to 5 years. Workspace records the project as completed in June 2024, while Baresque’s project page was published on November 29, 2024.
Workspace describes the interiors as Montessori-inspired spaces. Baresque identifies the project type as Education, credits MGiD as designer and lists ceilings and upholstery among the applications. Those details place the acoustic work in a setting with very young children, mixed activity levels and open areas that need to support play, care routines, movement and quiet moments without relying on a conventional classroom layout.
The project should be read as the Port Adelaide Westcare ELC documented by Baresque, Workspace and Westcare. Other centres using the Westcare name are not part of this account.

What acoustic panels were used at Westcare ELC?
Baresque says the brief focused on acoustic solutions for large open spaces. The principal named acoustic products are Zintra Box Baffles Random and plain acoustic panels.

The Zintra Box Baffles Random were selected for sound absorption and for their visual presence. Baresque says the baffles were supplied in Eucalyptus and Spotted Gum tones. Rather than treating the ceiling as a blank technical surface, the design uses these suspended elements to help define zones within the open plan.
That dual role is important. A ceiling baffle can contribute to absorption where sound energy reaches its surface, while its position, colour and rhythm can give children and staff a visual cue that one area is distinct from another. The project description establishes that this was the design intention; it does not state the baffles’ quantity, spacing, thickness, coverage percentage or tested Noise Reduction Coefficient for the installed arrangement.
Plain acoustic panels around ceiling features
Baresque also reports that plain acoustic panels were used to shape and wrap ceiling features. Their appearance was coordinated with the flooring, extending the material palette beyond isolated hanging baffles.
Shaping and wrapping a ceiling feature can make acoustic treatment read as part of the architecture instead of as an afterthought. It can also allow designers to place absorption around a specific ceiling form. The available project account does not identify the panel dimensions, substrate, mounting details or the resulting reverberation time in any room.
Absorption is not the same as sound isolation
For an early learning centre, “acoustic” can describe several different goals. Absorption reduces reflected sound within a room; isolation limits sound passing between rooms or spaces. Baresque’s Westcare description addresses absorption in large open areas. It does not claim that the Zintra products provide a tested wall, door or floor assembly for separating one room from another.

This distinction helps prevent an over-broad reading of the project. A visually integrated ceiling treatment may help manage reflections in the space where it is installed, but the published material does not establish how much sound reaches adjacent rooms, offices or sleeping areas.
How the acoustic treatment also creates visual zones
Open-plan early learning environments often need to accommodate several activities at once. Baresque says the Westcare baffles helped define zones visually as well as acoustically. The Eucalyptus and Spotted Gum finishes therefore perform as part of the wayfinding and identity of the interior, not just as technical components overhead.
Plain panels around ceiling features reinforce that approach. By matching the flooring, the panels connect the ceiling plane to the floor plane, giving the interior a deliberate material continuity. The project description does not assign a separate acoustic target to each zone, so it would be inaccurate to say that a particular colour or ceiling feature corresponds to a measured noise threshold or learning outcome.

That guidance is manufacturer information. It can explain why early consultation is useful when planning an education interior, but it is not independent confirmation that Westcare achieved a particular classroom-acoustic standard.
How upholstery completes the material strategy
The acoustic ceiling work is paired with a furniture and upholstery specification intended for intensive daily use. Baresque names healthcare-grade vinyl and woven fabrics in the project: Endurepel Moritz, Petal Dots and Calypso.
Endurepel Moritz on a documented furniture item
Workspace specifically lists Cove Low Back Armchairs upholstered in Baresque Endurepel Moritz Granite. This is the clearest link between a named fabric and an installed furniture item in the published project information. The Granite colour gives the armchairs a defined, neutral finish within the broader palette.

Workspace also lists staff task chairs, sled-base chairs, custom round ottomans, tables and storage. The source does not provide an upholstery fabric for every one of those items, so the documented connection should remain limited to the Cove Low Back Armchairs and the fabrics Baresque names generally for the fit-out.
What Baresque claims about the fabrics
Baresque describes the Endurepel, Petal Dots and Calypso selections as incorporating Crypton technology and Endurepel shield protection. It characterises the materials as durable, water resistant and antibacterial, and identifies the vinyl as healthcare grade.
Those are product and supplier descriptions, not results from a Westcare-specific laboratory programme. The project pages do not state a cleaning frequency, disinfectant list, abrasion score, stain test, warranty term or measured service life for the furniture in use. A facility considering a similar specification would need the current technical and maintenance documents for the exact fabric, colour and furniture construction.
Why combine acoustic treatment with upholstery?
Ceiling absorption and upholstered furniture address different surfaces and different design decisions. The baffles and panels are fixed architectural elements intended to manage reflected sound in open areas. Upholstery belongs to movable or semi-movable furniture, where material choice has to accommodate comfort, appearance, cleaning and wear.
Using one coordinated supplier for several finish categories can reduce the number of separate material conversations. Maria Gianquitto, Principal at MGID, described that advantage this way: “Using one company for a variety of finishes makes it a seamless conversation from the design process through to the tender, ordering and delivery of the project.”
Recommended Free Tools
At Westcare, that coordination is visible in the relationship between ceiling finishes, flooring references and seating fabrics. It does not mean that upholstery replaces a room-acoustic design, or that acoustic panels automatically satisfy furniture hygiene requirements. Each component still needs to be specified for its own function.

How to evaluate a similar early learning fit-out
Westcare provides a useful way to organise a specification conversation, without serving as a substitute for project-specific calculations or testing.
1. Define the rooms and activities
List open play areas, quieter corners, sleep spaces, circulation routes, staff work points and any rooms that need sound separation. “Large open spaces” is a starting description, not a complete acoustic brief. The number of children, simultaneous activities and ceiling height can change the treatment required.
2. Separate absorption from isolation goals
Decide whether each problem is excessive reflection inside a room, sound transfer between rooms, or both. Ceiling baffles and panels primarily belong to an absorption strategy. Walls, doors, glazing, seals and building assemblies belong to an isolation strategy. Do not use an absorption product as evidence that an adjacent-room isolation target has been met.
3. Coordinate coverage with the interior design
Map where suspended baffles or wrapped panels can be installed without conflicting with lighting, sprinklers, ventilation, access or supervision sightlines. Westcare’s documented use of Eucalyptus and Spotted Gum demonstrates how colour and placement can support visual zoning, but a new project still needs its own reflected-ceiling plan and services coordination.
4. Request product evidence for the exact specification
Ask for the current technical sheet for the selected Zintra configuration or other acoustic product, including dimensions, mounting method, fire information and laboratory ratings where applicable. For upholstery, request the technical and care information for the precise fabric, colour and backing. A generic product family description is not the same as evidence for a particular assembled item.
5. Set a verification plan
Before handover, decide whether the project requires acoustic measurements, visual inspection, installation checks or post-occupancy feedback. Measurements should identify the rooms, conditions and method used. Without that information, claims about improvement remain design intent rather than verified project performance.

Practical questions about durability and maintenance
In a centre serving children from 6 weeks to 5 years, furniture is exposed to frequent contact, spills and repeated cleaning. Baresque’s descriptions of water resistance, antibacterial properties and Endurepel shield protection explain why those attributes were relevant to the specification. They do not provide a maintenance schedule for Westcare.
Operators should therefore confirm which cleaning agents, dilution ratios, dwell times and tools are approved for each exact upholstery material. They should also check whether a healthcare-grade vinyl and a woven fabric require different procedures. Cleaning requirements, seam construction, cushion access and replacement availability can affect whole-life performance as much as the fabric label.
The same discipline applies to ceiling products. A facilities plan should identify how staff can inspect, dust or repair suspended baffles and panels without damaging finishes or interfering with services. None of those operational details is published for Westcare, so they should not be inferred from the project photographs or product names.
Project timeline and credits
Workspace records completion in June 2024 and credits photography to Cat McKenzie, Occhio. Baresque’s project page followed on November 29, 2024. The pages identify MGiD as designer and Westcare as the early learning setting; they do not publish a separate commissioning date for the acoustic installation.
The timeline is useful context when comparing project documents: a completion date describes when the fit-out was finished, while a later project page describes when Baresque published its account. Neither date is an acoustic performance measurement.
Bottom line for designers and operators
Westcare ELC shows how an early learning interior can treat acoustic products as visible architecture. Baresque’s Zintra Box Baffles Random in Eucalyptus and Spotted Gum, together with plain panels shaped around ceiling features, were intended to absorb sound in large open spaces and help establish zones. Endurepel Moritz, Petal Dots and Calypso extend the coordinated specification into upholstery, with Endurepel Moritz Granite documented on Cove Low Back Armchairs.
The strongest conclusion supported by the project record is about coordination and intent: acoustic treatment, ceiling design, flooring references and hard-wearing upholstery were planned as one material conversation. The record does not support a numerical claim about reverberation, noise reduction or children’s learning. Those outcomes require measurements and operational evidence from the completed centre.
