The contrast gave the renovated interior a more contemporary, refined character without abandoning the warmth and luxury associated with the existing finishes. Cemintel’s case study also says the product was prefinished and quick to install, helping reduce disruption while the restaurant was transformed; it does not provide a measured schedule or independent confirmation of that claim.

The project is useful as a design lesson rather than a specification sheet: it shows how a concrete-look surface can act as a controlled counterpoint to decorative materials, while leaving practical questions about cost, fixing details, maintenance and performance to be answered for each individual site.
The design problem Candelori’s renovation needed to solve
Candelori’s Restaurant has served Italian food and wine in a luxury dining setting since 1999, according to Cemintel’s official case study. The case study describes a recent complete transformation, but it does not date the renovation, identify the restaurant’s location, or name the architect or builder.
That context matters because a dining room built around marble and wood already has visual richness. Marble supplies pattern, polish and a sense of permanence. Timber contributes grain, warmth and a more tactile note. Adding another decorative finish could have made the room feel busy. The design challenge was to add a contemporary layer without competing with the food, table settings or established material palette.
Recommended Free Tools
Cemintel presents Barestone Internal as the answer to that problem. Its appearance is described as raw concrete, giving the room a visually restrained surface against which marble and wood can remain legible. The cladding is therefore not presented as a replacement for those materials; it works as a deliberate counterpoint.
What Barestone cladding changed in the dining room
A raw-concrete counterpoint
Concrete-look surfaces are visually quieter than veined stone or strongly grained timber when they are used as a broad background. In Candelori’s dining room, that restraint allows the warmer and more decorative finishes to read as intentional features rather than as parts of a competing collage. The effect is contrast through texture and tone, not contrast through an unrelated colour scheme.
A contemporary layer over a luxury setting
The case study positions the restaurant as high-end and contemporary, and describes the cladding as helping create a refined look. Raw concrete imagery can sometimes suggest an industrial or utilitarian interior. Here, the surrounding marble, timber and hospitality setting give the same visual language a more polished interpretation. The material’s impact comes from its relationship with the rest of the room, not from treating concrete appearance as a complete style on its own.
A more comfortable guest environment
Restaurant owner Ross Candelori linked the material choice to both appearance and customer experience:

“Coming to Candelori’s is about an experience, and we wanted a space that reflected and complemented the beauty of our food. The cladding gave us a refined look that enhances the restaurant’s high end contemporary dining feel, while creating an area our customers are comfortable in,”
This is an owner’s retrospective statement published in the manufacturer’s case study. It communicates the intended outcome—refinement and comfort—rather than a measured customer-satisfaction result.
Why concrete-look cladding can work beside marble and timber
It controls visual competition
When a room contains several focal materials, the broadest surfaces usually need the least visually aggressive treatment. A raw-concrete appearance can provide that visual baseline. Marble can retain its veining, and timber can retain its grain, because the cladding does not ask the eye to decode another elaborate pattern.
It balances warm and cool impressions
Wood is commonly read as warm, while concrete is commonly read as cool and mineral. Using both creates a temperature contrast that can make each material feel more deliberate. In a restaurant, this balance can help a contemporary scheme avoid becoming either overly clinical or overly rustic. The right result depends on the actual colour, lighting and scale selected; the case study does not publish those details for Candelori’s.
It adds texture without adding ornament
Texture can make a wall feel substantial even when the surface is visually simple. Concrete-look cladding offers that sense of depth without introducing another decorative motif. This is particularly relevant where artwork, menus, lighting or food presentation already provide visual activity.
It supports zoning
A change from marble or timber to a concrete-look surface can mark a host stand, lounge, service zone or private dining area without constructing a new partition. Whether Barestone was used for a particular zone at Candelori’s is not stated; the general planning principle is to use material changes to signal a shift in function while keeping the palette coherent.
What the case study says about installation and business disruption
Cemintel says Barestone Internal was prefinished and quick to install. According to the manufacturer, those attributes reduced disruption and helped the restaurant welcome customers back sooner during the transformation. No project schedule, closure length, installation crew details or independent verification is provided, so “quick” should be understood as the manufacturer’s project claim rather than a guaranteed duration.

Why prefinishing can matter in an operating restaurant
A prefinished product can reduce the amount of finishing work required at the venue compared with a surface that must be coated, textured or sealed on site. Fewer wet trades may simplify coordination and reduce the time that other work has to wait for a finish to dry. Those are practical reasons a restaurant owner might investigate a prefinished system when every closure day has operational consequences.

A prefinished panel still needs accurate setting out, cutting, joint treatment where applicable and protection from damage by other trades. None of those project-specific details is published for Candelori’s.
Questions to ask before relying on a fast-installation claim
- What areas must be isolated, and can work proceed in stages?
- How will materials enter the building without affecting diners, neighbours or deliveries?
- What preparation does the existing wall require before cladding can be fixed?
- Which cuts, penetrations and junctions must be completed on site?
- How will finished faces be protected while lighting, joinery and furniture are installed?
- What inspection, fire, hygiene and accessibility approvals apply to the intended use?
These checks turn a broad marketing benefit into a project-specific programme. They are especially important when a venue plans to remain partially open rather than close for a single uninterrupted fit-out.
Prefinished cladding versus an on-site concrete-look finish
The Candelori’s case study names no competing products. The comparison below is therefore a planning framework, not a product ranking. It shows the decisions an owner, designer and contractor should make when choosing between a prefinished cladding approach and a finish created at the restaurant.
| Decision factor | Prefinished cladding | On-site concrete-look finish |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance control | The visible finish is selected before delivery; Cemintel describes Barestone Internal as having a raw-concrete appearance. | The final appearance is developed at the venue, so sample approval and installer consistency are critical. |
| Work at the restaurant | Prefinishing can reduce finishing operations on site; the case study says Barestone was quick to install. | Application, drying or curing and possible rework occur on site, which can add coordination steps. |
| Disruption planning | Cemintel says the approach reduced disruption at Candelori’s, but gives no duration. | The closure or staging requirement depends on the chosen system, site conditions and finish build-up. |
| Design flexibility after delivery | Changes to colour, texture or damaged pieces may be limited once the material is ordered. | On-site work may allow adjustments during application, but changes can affect consistency and programme. |
| Evidence available for Candelori’s | Named product, raw-concrete appearance, prefinished description and manufacturer-reported quick installation. | No on-site finish is reported for this project. |
For a real specification, request full samples in the intended lighting and confirm how joints, corners, service penetrations, cleaning and repairs will look. A photograph or short case-study description cannot answer those technical questions.
A practical decision framework for a restaurant renovation
1. Map the existing material hierarchy
List which surfaces are meant to attract attention and which are background planes. Record marble movement, timber tones, metal finishes, upholstery and lighting colour. The aim is to identify where a quiet mineral texture can add contrast without creating a new focal point.
2. Define the guest-facing objective
Choose a specific outcome: a more contemporary arrival, a calmer lounge, a stronger backdrop for artwork or a clearer distinction between dining zones. “Concrete look” is not an objective by itself. Candelori’s owner described refinement and comfort, which gives the material choice a hospitality purpose.

- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
3. Test scale and lighting
View large samples, not only small swatches. A texture that appears subtle at hand size may read strongly across a full wall. Check it in daylight, evening light and the actual decorative lighting, because grazing light can emphasize surface variation while flat light can reduce it.
4. Coordinate the technical package
Before ordering, resolve substrate tolerances, backing, junctions, doors, skirtings, electrical outlets, signage and fire or hygiene requirements. Ask the manufacturer and installer for current installation instructions and maintenance guidance for the exact product and interior application. The available case study does not provide those specifications.
5. Build a disruption plan
Use the installation sequence to decide whether work can be completed after service, in zones or during a full closure. Include delivery, protection, inspection and handover—not only the time required to fix the visible material. Cemintel’s claim that prefinishing and quick installation helped Candelori’s reopen sooner is a reason to investigate the approach, not a substitute for a programme prepared for your building.
6. Approve a finished mock-up
Agree on the acceptable appearance of joints, edges, cut-outs and transitions to marble or timber before broad installation. A mock-up also lets the hospitality team judge whether the surface supports the intended atmosphere from a seated diner’s viewpoint.

The official Cemintel case study establishes that Candelori’s Restaurant has served Italian food and wine in a luxury setting since 1999; that the renovation is described as a complete transformation; that Cemintel Barestone Internal was used; and that Cemintel characterizes the product as raw-concrete in appearance, prefinished and quick to install. It also records Ross Candelori’s positive assessment of the refined, contemporary feel and customer comfort.
The same source does not state the restaurant’s location, renovation date, architect, builder, areas clad, quantities, colour or texture variant, fixing system, fire or acoustic performance, maintenance regime, project cost, closure length or measured return-to-service date. Those omissions are important. They prevent a reader from treating this case study as a full specification, cost guide or independently audited programme.

How to apply the lesson without copying the room
The strongest takeaway is not to reproduce a particular restaurant wall. It is to use material contrast purposefully. Start with the finishes that already carry identity, then introduce a concrete-look surface where the room needs visual calm, contemporary character or a subtle boundary between functions. Keep the hospitality goal—comfort, clarity and a setting that complements the food—at the centre of the decision.
Specify the product only after confirming the technical requirements of the actual wall and the regulations governing the venue. Obtain current manufacturer documentation, samples and installer advice, and treat installation speed as a benefit to be demonstrated in the project schedule. That disciplined process preserves the design idea that worked at Candelori’s while acknowledging the information the published case study does not provide.
