At Melbourne’s Clifton Hill House, BINQ’s full-height glazed timber sliders are the hinge between a renovated terrace and its gardens. The 3.0 m-high, double-glazed doors run along both sides of the living room: north to a new courtyard and south to the rear garden. That arrangement lets the room address two outdoor spaces while the widened site, skylit dining area and carefully controlled upper-level windows carry daylight deeper into the house.

Field Office Architecture completed the renovation and addition in 2018. The published project descriptions explain the spatial and lighting intentions, but they do not provide measured energy use, daylight levels or post-occupancy results. The value of Clifton Hill House is therefore best understood as a design case study: it shows how orientation, a courtyard and large operable openings can be composed as one sequence.

The manufacturer’s account identifies the original building as a late 19th-century terrace at the end of a row. Behind the narrow front portion, the block expands to roughly double-width proportions. That unusual change in width gave the designers room to make a courtyard rather than treating the rear addition as a dark strip behind the heritage rooms.

Why the widened site mattered more than simply adding bigger windows
The brief called for a simple, modern living, meals and kitchen area, plus a main bedroom and studio. The two front bedrooms of the terrace were retained, while the new work was stripped back. Instead of relying on a single glazed wall at the back, the plan uses the extra width to place a north-facing courtyard beside the principal living spaces.
North orientation is significant in Melbourne because it gives the courtyard access to the sun’s daily path. The sources describe the orientation as a design decision, not as proof of a particular daylight factor or heating reduction. The courtyard becomes a piece of the plan that can be seen, entered and used from inside, rather than an isolated garden beyond a conventional rear door.
A courtyard directly beside dining and living
Dining and living open directly to the courtyard. The dining zone is described as a gallery, receiving natural light from the courtyard and from a series of skylights. This combination matters: the courtyard supplies side light and an outdoor outlook, while the skylights bring light from above into the deeper part of the plan.

It is not presented as a quantified light well; its documented role is spatial and visual. The arrangement gives the kitchen, meals and living areas a clear north-facing address while preserving a connection to the garden at the opposite end.
How the BINQ doors organize the living room
The living room is wrapped by full-height, 3.0 m double-glazed timber sliders. One set faces north toward the courtyard and another faces south toward the rear garden, according to BINQ’s project description and Field Office Architecture’s account.

Two directions, one continuous threshold
With doors on both sides, the living room has more than a single “inside-to-outside” view. Opening north makes the courtyard part of everyday living and dining; opening south extends the room toward the rear garden. When both sides are open, the plan can be read as a sequence from the terrace, through the living room, to the garden. The sources describe this connection and the light-filled ambition, but do not state the exact sill details, opening widths, ventilation rates or installed hardware.
Why full height changes the visual reading
A 3.0 m opening reaches from near floor level to the ceiling line, so the frame is experienced as a vertical edge rather than a small glazed insert. Timber members provide a warm, tactile counterpart to the large panes. The double glazing is part of the specified door construction; it should not be treated as evidence of a measured thermal result for this house.
Sliding panels also allow the occupants to vary the threshold. The room can remain visually connected to a garden while the panels are closed, or become physically continuous with the courtyard and rear garden when conditions suit. No source gives a schedule for when the doors are opened, nor does it report post-occupancy observations.
Light is layered through the plan, not supplied by one product
It would be misleading to attribute the project’s “light-filled” character to the doors alone. The documented strategy combines four moves:
- Widening the rear site: the double-width portion allows a substantial courtyard beside the new living areas.
- Choosing a north-facing courtyard: the main outdoor room is oriented toward controlled northern light.
- Adding skylights: the dining gallery receives light from above as well as from the courtyard.
- Using full-height sliders on two sides: the living room can face both the courtyard and the rear garden.
This is a useful distinction for anyone studying the project. A large glazed door can provide outlook and a route to a garden, but its effect depends on what is outside it, which way that space faces and whether daylight has a path into adjacent rooms.

The upper level: controlled north light for a bedroom and studio
The upper floor contains the main bedroom, walk-in robe and client studio. The owner is an artist, and the project description identifies controlled north-facing light as an important requirement. The placement therefore treats daylight as something to shape and moderate, not simply maximize with the largest possible opening.

Studio and bedroom planning
The studio shares the upper-level strategy with the main bedroom: both are planned around the quality and control of northern light. The available project descriptions do not publish window dimensions, glazing specifications for these rooms or measured illuminance. They establish the intent and arrangement rather than a performance calculation.
A Juliet balcony that can open on hot nights
The main bedroom includes a Juliet balcony that can be left open on hot nights. A Juliet balcony does not create a walk-out platform; here, its documented role is to allow the bedroom opening to remain open when nighttime conditions make that desirable. The sources do not quantify air-change rates, indoor temperatures or cooling-energy savings, so those outcomes should not be inferred.
Materials that make the glazing read as part of the architecture
BINQ describes a restrained external palette of dark feature timber framing, marine-grade plywood and rendered recycled brickwork. The stain colour is identified as RAW. These choices give the large sliders a material context: the timber frames are a visible architectural element, while plywood and recycled brick keep the addition distinct from the retained terrace without competing with it.
The contrast between the older front rooms and the stripped-back addition is central to the project’s character. The sources do not claim that the materials are maintenance-free or provide a lifecycle assessment. Their documented contribution is visual: dark timber, plywood and recycled brick establish a limited palette around the courtyard and garden openings.

What is—and is not—specified about the BINQ systems
BINQ’s Clifton Hill House page lists four product categories associated with its work: Lift Slide, Awning, Fixed and IV40 Hinged. The project pages do not provide exact installed model numbers, identify which category is used at every opening or publish performance ratings for the house.
| BINQ category listed on the project page | Opening idea | What the Clifton Hill sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| Lift Slide | Large sliding panels that can open a broad wall section | The living room has full-height timber sliders; the exact installed model is not stated. |
| Awning | Top-hinged ventilation opening | The category is listed by BINQ, but no Clifton Hill location is assigned to it. |
| Fixed | Non-opening glazing for view and daylight | The category is listed by BINQ, but no Clifton Hill location is assigned to it. |
| IV40 Hinged | Hinged door or window opening | The category is listed by BINQ, but no Clifton Hill location is assigned to it. |
This distinction prevents a common error in project coverage: treating a manufacturer’s category list as a room-by-room schedule. Clifton Hill House supports a contextual discussion of lift-slide doors and architectural glazing; it does not support a model-by-model buying recommendation.

1. Keep the heritage rooms legible
The original front two bedrooms remain the retained portion of the terrace. The new work is described as stripped back, allowing the addition to have a contemporary identity instead of imitating every detail of the older facade. For a renovation, this is a planning choice before it is a window choice: decide which rooms carry the memory of the existing building and which rooms can be reorganized.
2. Use site width to improve more than circulation
The widened rear block is used to make a courtyard, not merely to enlarge the floor plate. That decision gives the new living area an outdoor room on its north side and creates the conditions for the paired slider arrangement.
3. Put daylight where the plan needs it
The dining gallery’s skylights address a different problem from the courtyard-facing doors. One brings light from above into the interior sequence; the other establishes a lateral view and access to outdoors. Combining them is more deliberate than assuming one large window will illuminate every part of an open plan.

4. Match opening type to the desired relationship with outdoors
The living room uses sliders because the design calls for a broad, adjustable connection to two gardens. Other openings may need fixed, awning or hinged systems for different reasons. The Clifton Hill documentation names these categories but does not prescribe one universal solution.
5. Treat orientation and operability as separate decisions
North-facing light is emphasized for the courtyard and upper-level rooms, while the bedroom’s Juliet balcony is described in terms of opening on hot nights. Orientation affects the light available; operability affects when occupants can respond to weather. Neither is a substitute for measured thermal or daylight analysis.
Evidence limits for evaluating “light-filled” interiors
The phrase “light-filled” appears in the project narrative as a design ambition. The published sources support the physical facts behind that ambition: the north-facing courtyard, skylights, two-sided 3.0 m sliders and controlled north light upstairs. They do not report daylight autonomy, lux readings, glare studies, energy bills, indoor temperatures or post-occupancy surveys.

Results would depend on orientation, shading, frame properties, seals, ventilation, curtains, occupant behavior and local weather. Any numerical claim about energy savings or daylight improvement would go beyond the documented project information.
Where to see the documented project details
BINQ’s Clifton Hill House page provides the manufacturer’s description of the glazing, courtyard, materials, upper-level light strategy and product-category labels. Field Office Architecture’s project page identifies the practice, gives the 2018 completion date and describes the design approach. ArchDaily’s listing records the 180 m² area and manufacturer credit.
Together, those pages document a coherent architectural idea: a late 19th-century terrace is retained at the front, a widened rear site is organized around a north-facing courtyard, and full-height glazed timber sliders make the living room a threshold between two outdoor spaces. They do not establish a measured performance ranking for the doors or the house.
