Calmika is an approximately 2,500-square-foot Mumbai apartment organised around one decisive move: a circular living room with a bow-shaped curved sofa at its centre. Instead of pointing seats toward a television or arranging them in a formal rectangle, the plan makes conversation, daylight and the wrap-around deck part of the room’s everyday focus.

Designed by Amit and Preeti Porwal, founders of Icon Projects Inspace Pvt Ltd (IPIPL), the home uses curves as a linking device rather than a decorative motif. What defines Calmika
ELLE DECOR India presented Calmika on 18 September 2026 as a Mumbai apartment whose rooms are connected by repeated lines and carefully controlled changes in mood. The project includes the principal shared and private spaces a family needs, but the circulation between them is treated as design rather than leftover area.

How a curved sofa organises the living room
A social centre instead of a viewing line
The sofa is curved like a bow and sits within a circular living-room arrangement. In a conventional formal plan, a sofa and matching chairs often face one another across a central table or all point toward a television. That geometry creates clear seats, but it can also make the room feel divided into front and back. Calmika’s arc removes a single “front.” People can sit along the curve, turn toward one another, or look past the seating toward the deck.
This is a planning strategy, not a claim that a curved sofa automatically makes every room larger. Its value is that the seating edge follows the room’s circular organisation and keeps the centre available for movement and conversation. The open side preserves a visual relationship with the outdoor edge instead of closing the arrangement into a rectangle.

Why the deck matters to the arrangement
The living room is visually open to a deck that wraps around the apartment’s edges. That connection gives the sofa more than an internal backdrop: daylight and air become part of the composition, and the room can be read together with the perimeter outdoors. Because the deck follows the home rather than appearing as a single isolated balcony, rooms along the edge share a common environmental threshold.
For anyone adapting the idea, the practical lesson is to draw the sofa, circulation path and opening to the deck at the same time. A curved sectional pushed against a wall may look sculptural but will not create the same social focus. Leave a readable route around the seating and protect the sightline to the exterior.
The sculpted ceiling that stitches the shared rooms
Several services in one continuous form
Above the living room, a sculpted ceiling gathers lighting, air-conditioning and curtain tracks into one designed line. Concealing these functional elements within a single form prevents each service from becoming a separate visual interruption. The ceiling is therefore doing technical work as well as providing a strong architectural gesture.
The same line continues toward the kitchen and passage. Amit Porwal and Preeti Porwal describe the intention this way:
“The linear flow of the ceiling extends from the living area into the kitchen and passage, visually stitching the spaces together and reinforcing continuity across the home”.

That sentence explains the project’s connective logic. The ceiling does not stop at the boundary of the living room, so the transition to cooking and circulation reads as a continuation rather than a series of unrelated ceilings. The effect is visual continuity; it should not be confused with measured evidence that the apartment feels larger.

Planning a similar ceiling
- Map the services first. Mark lighting positions, air-conditioning routes and curtain tracks before deciding where the sculpted edge will turn.
- Choose one datum. A consistent height or alignment helps the ceiling read as one gesture when it passes from living room to kitchen and passage.
- Allow access. Service panels and maintenance clearances still need to work even when equipment is hidden inside a continuous form.
- Test the transitions. Check the ceiling line from the main seating position, the kitchen entrance and the passage so the curve remains legible from each viewpoint.
These are transferable planning principles drawn from what is visible in Calmika; the published feature does not provide construction drawings or service dimensions.
When a passage becomes part of the experience
Arches create pauses
Calmika’s passage is not treated as a neutral corridor. Arched ceiling details mark the route and slow the eye as it moves between rooms. An arch can frame a threshold without requiring a full partition, allowing the circulation path to feel intentional while retaining visual connection.
Artworks and the family mandir add identity
Artworks punctuate the passage, giving the walk between rooms moments to stop and look. A family mandir is incorporated into the sequence, so a place of daily significance is encountered as part of the home’s architecture rather than hidden in an afterthought. Together, the arches, art and mandir make circulation carry memory and ritual as well as movement.
If you are painting a comparable passage, treat each pause as a composition. Confirm where a viewer will stand, how daylight reaches the wall and whether a strong colour would support the artwork or compete with it. Calmika’s feature does not identify paint colours, so any palette recommendation for another home should begin with its own art, light and stone samples.

Natural stone and timber establish the base palette
Continuity through restrained materials
Natural stone and wood form the apartment’s restrained material base. The choice keeps the principal rooms connected even when their furniture and decorative treatments change. Timber ceilings in the kitchen and den add warmth overhead, while natural stone in the primary bathroom continues the grounded material language into the private zone.
The designers summarise their aesthetic intention as follows:
“We wanted texture, form and natural light to become the defining aesthetic rather than ornamentation.”
In practical terms, that means the surfaces are asked to carry atmosphere through grain, mineral variation, shadow and daylight. Colour is introduced through art, textiles and furnishings rather than by covering every architectural surface with a competing statement.

- Timber temperature: Wood ceilings add visual warmth, so a wall colour that looks neutral alone may appear cooler or flatter beside them.

The den is the deliberate change of pace
Against the quiet common palette, the den is intentionally more expressive. It combines rich wallpaper, an ombré-finished television wall and a timber ceiling. The room concentrates decorative energy rather than distributing it evenly throughout the apartment.
This contrast is useful because it shows that continuity does not require every room to look identical. The repeated ceiling language and natural materials connect the home; the den then provides a deeper, more enveloping moment. Wallpaper supplies pattern over a broad field, while the ombré television wall introduces a graduated finish instead of a flat block of colour. The timber ceiling links those richer surfaces back to the material vocabulary used elsewhere.
Using an ombré wall without losing control
- Define the wall’s visual centre and keep the television, shelving or artwork aligned to it.
- Choose a limited colour family so the transition reads as a gradient rather than random bands.
- Paint sample boards at full height; a small swatch cannot show how a tonal shift behaves across a wide wall.
- Coordinate the darkest and lightest points with the wallpaper and timber so none of the three surfaces becomes an accidental focal point.
The project confirms the presence of an ombré-finished television wall, but it does not state the colours, paint system or installer. Those technical decisions must be specified for each new room.

Calmika works through two simultaneous decisions. Curves, the connected ceiling and the deck create continuity across the shared areas. The den’s wallpaper, gradient wall and timber overhead introduce variation in a contained space. Neither strategy is presented as a ranking of one room over another; the interest comes from their relationship.

Reading the home this way helps avoid a common mistake: copying one visible object while missing the system around it. A curved sofa has meaning here because the ceiling, deck and circulation support its orientation.
A practical sequence for borrowing the ideas
- Start with movement. Draw the route from entry to living room, kitchen, bedrooms and deck. Identify where a person can pause without blocking passage.
- Set the social centre. Use a curved sofa only after deciding what it should face: conversation, an exterior view, art or more than one of these.
