Catherine Kwong’s Sea Ranch retreat is a study in careful editing: instead of remaking the 1972 cedar house, she repaired selected elements, added practical family spaces and let John Haag’s original connection to the landscape remain the main event.
A 1972 cedar house chosen for its setting
Catherine Kwong and her husband bought their Sea Ranch house in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The home, designed in 1972 by architect John Haag, sits on the forest side of The Sea Ranch against a steep hillside. Architectural Digest’s January 23, 2025 feature by Mayer Rus presents it as a compact, landscape-led retreat rather than a blank canvas for a comprehensive remodel.

Haag had worked as an associate in Joseph Esherick’s office, a detail that places the house within the Bay Area architectural lineage associated with The Sea Ranch. The planned community emerged in the 1960s and, as the feature describes it, stretches along 10 miles of Northern California coastline. Those figures are contextual descriptions in the feature, not a survey of the community’s current boundaries.
The house is roughly 1,200 square feet, with cedar construction, folded planes and sloping rooflines. Generous windows pull views of the forest and Pacific into the rooms. Kwong has described her long-standing fascination with the place: “I’ve always been obsessed with The Sea Ranch from an architectural point of view. It casts such a spell—letting nature envelop you as you’re cradled in this incredible landscape right by the ocean,” she says.

That setting explains why the family chose restraint. The house was already in good condition, and the original geometry, material palette and sight lines carried more value than a larger or more conspicuous intervention.

Kwong’s renovation addressed daily use without erasing the building’s character. She describes the strategy plainly: “We wanted to preserve the integrity of the original design so we tried not to do too much,” she adds.
| Existing condition or feature | Reported intervention | Why it matters to the design |
|---|---|---|
| Original cedar house and millwork | Portions of the millwork were refurbished. | Repair keeps the tactile, built-in quality associated with the 1972 interior instead of replacing it wholesale. |
| Kitchen carpet | Replaced with ceramic floor tile in a gingham motif. | The strongest graphic update adds pattern to a hardworking room while remaining a floor treatment rather than a full stylistic overhaul. |
| Kitchen layout and equipment | The kitchen was renovated, and a window seat was added. | The seat creates a place to pause near the view; the renovation updates function without competing with the windows and roof forms. |
| Bathrooms | Bathrooms were renovated. | Private, high-use rooms received practical attention while the larger architectural shell remained the focus. |
The feature does not identify a tile manufacturer, collection, dimensions, finish or installation method. “Gingham” describes the visual motif reported in the story; it does not establish a particular product or a specific black-and-white color combination. Any attempt to reproduce the floor would require independent decisions about tile body, grout, wet-area performance and maintenance.
Why the house still reads as distinctly Sea Ranch
Form follows the hillside
The steep site and folded architectural planes make the house feel shaped by its terrain. Sloping rooflines and cedar surfaces continue the visual language of the surrounding forest, while the windows keep the Pacific present from inside. In a home of roughly 1,200 square feet, those relationships do more work than adding rooms or enlarging the footprint would.

Windows are the primary decoration
Kwong’s quiet interiors allow the outlook to function as a changing artwork. Forest, weather and ocean light supply variation that patterned walls or a large collection of accessories could easily interrupt. The approach is not an absence of design; it is a decision to make the building’s openings, proportions and views legible.
Built-ins support compact living
Refurbished millwork and the new kitchen window seat add usefulness without introducing freestanding bulk. In a small retreat, a seat integrated at the window can serve reading, watching the weather or informal family conversation while preserving circulation around the kitchen.
A restrained interior with carefully chosen objects
Kwong characterizes the decorating strategy as selective rather than severe: “There are little pattern and color moves throughout, but I wanted to keep everything pretty quiet,” she says. The result combines modernist design, vintage pieces and a few expressive surfaces instead of relying on a single period-perfect scheme.
| Object or material | Where it appears in the feature | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic gingham-pattern floor tile | Kitchen | Installed when carpet was replaced; maker and specifications are not stated. |
| Roger Capron tiled cocktail table | Living area | Identified by name in the feature. |
| 1940s woodworker’s stool | Beside the cocktail table | The period is noted, but the maker is not identified. |
| Alvar Aalto dining chairs for Artek | Dining area | Chairs are identified as Aalto designs made for Artek; cushions are by Johanna Gullichsen. |
| Vintage Tommi Parzinger candelabra | On a Michael van Beuren cabinet | Both the candelabra and cabinet are named in the feature. |
| Eames Lounge Chair | Living area | Named as an interior furnishing; the feature does not provide a model or production date. |
| George Nelson pendant lamps | Interior lighting | Named in the feature; exact fixture models are not specified. |
| Bertazzoni range | Kitchen | Identified in a kitchen photo caption; model, finish and installation details are not stated. |
| Schoolhouse blankets | Children’s room | Identified in a room caption; pattern and current availability are not established. |
The mix works because each named piece has room around it. A tiled table can provide texture, while the Aalto chairs and Nelson lighting keep the dining area tied to twentieth-century modernism. The vintage candelabra and cabinet introduce age and craft. None has to become a theme that overwhelms the cedar shell.

How the family uses the compact plan
A loft bedroom over the living room
The primary bedroom occupies a loft above the living room. That arrangement lets the sleeping area share the house’s volume without consuming another full room on the main level. It also reinforces the vertical quality created by the sloping rooflines.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A bunk room for children
A dedicated bunk room gives the children a place of their own and makes the small house workable for family stays. The feature identifies Schoolhouse blankets in the children’s-room caption, but it does not provide a complete furnishings inventory or a measured room plan.
Life organized by trails, beaches and tides
The retreat is presented as a base for outdoor routines rather than as an inward-looking showpiece. “The kids have their favorite hikes and their favorite beaches. We make plans based on the tides,” Kwong notes. That rhythm makes the house’s modest size an advantage: the interior supports rest, meals and gathering between excursions instead of trying to duplicate every activity indoors.
Kwong also mentions local pursuits that feel specific to The Sea Ranch: “There are plenty of activities, like foraging and silk scarf acrobatics. There’s even a class in biological illustration. It’s the most Sea Ranch thing you can think of.” The comment captures the community’s unusual blend of landscape study, physical activity and creative practice without turning the house into a resort-style program.

Design lessons from the renovation
Start with the building’s strongest evidence
For this house, the evidence was already visible: cedar, folded planes, roof slopes and framed views. A renovation that began with a trend or a new decorative language would have competed with those elements. Kwong instead treated the original architecture as the fixed point and changed only what improved use.

Use one high-impact pattern in a practical location
The gingham floor is the clearest visual departure because it occupies a durable, functional surface. Pattern on the floor can define a kitchen without forcing every wall, cabinet and textile to coordinate around it. The feature does not establish the tile’s technical performance, so anyone adapting the idea should verify slip resistance, water absorption, cleaning requirements and suitability for the intended installation.
Let repairs count as design work
Refurbishing millwork may attract less attention than a new kitchen, but it preserves details that cannot be recreated by simply ordering replacement cabinetry. In an older wood house, repair can retain grain, joinery and proportions that connect rooms to the original architect’s intent.
Keep color and pattern proportional to the view
Kwong’s “pretty quiet” approach does not prohibit color. It sets a hierarchy: landscape and architecture lead, furnishings establish comfort and history, and small pattern moves provide punctuation. That hierarchy is why a tiled cocktail table, a candelabra or a gingham floor can be memorable without making the interior feel busy.

Design for the actual household
The bunk room, window seat and renovated wet areas respond to family life. So does the decision not to enlarge the house simply because more square footage was possible. The best intervention is the one that makes the existing plan easier to live in while preserving the qualities that made the family choose it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat the feature does—and does not—document
The Architectural Digest story establishes the house’s reported date, architect, approximate size, setting, major renovation moves and selected furnishings. It does not provide architectural drawings, a complete room-by-room specification, construction costs, tile dimensions, product model numbers, installation details or performance testing.
- The 1972 construction date and roughly 1,200-square-foot area are reported figures, not measurements supplied by a current building survey.
- The description of The Sea Ranch emerging in the 1960s and extending along 10 miles of coastline is contextual reporting, not an independently checked statistic in the feature.
- Named furniture and appliance references identify what appears in the story; they should not be read as confirmation of current stock, exact models or retail pricing.
- The tile motif can inform a design direction, but matching the installed floor would require information the feature does not give.
Those limits sharpen the story’s value. This is not a catalog of products or a technical case study. It is a portrait of how a designer made a lightly altered family retreat feel complete by protecting the architecture, editing the interior and allowing daily life to remain visible.
The larger idea behind Kwong’s Sea Ranch home
Kwong’s house demonstrates that preservation can be an active design position. The family did not freeze the 1972 interior: they renovated the kitchen and bathrooms, replaced carpet, repaired millwork and added a window seat. But every change is measured against the cedar structure, the hillside and the views that give the house its identity.
That balance is what makes the project persuasive. The home accommodates children, bunk-room sleepovers, meals, reading and weather-driven plans without pretending to be larger or newer than it is. Vintage modernist pieces coexist with practical updates, and a single patterned floor supplies energy while the rest of the rooms stay calm. In Kwong’s Sea Ranch retreat, restraint is not a lack of ambition; it is the method that lets the original architecture—and the family using it—remain in charge.
