How Charles de Lisle Rebuilt a Crumbling Sonoma Cabin as a Seductive Retreat

Charles de Lisle’s Sonoma “Bro-jo” began as a sinking, neglected shed. Structural reinforcement, plywood, salvaged windows, paint and years of collected furniture turned it into a personal country retreat.

Charles de Lisle’s Sonoma County project began with a sinking shed, neglected acreage, and a property full of discarded material. He and his partner, Ralph Dennis, turned that shed—nicknamed the “Bro-jo”—into an informal retreat by putting structural repair first, wrapping the building in a simple plywood envelope, installing salvaged windows, and filling the rooms with objects accumulated over years. The result is less a conventional remodel than a deliberately personal composition: rugged enough for work on the land, but rich with vintage furniture, art, and carefully chosen lighting.

The “crumbling cabin” in Architectural Digest’s March 11, 2022 feature is the freestanding shed, not the property’s two-bedroom main house. The house, an 1880s redwood barn, a chicken coop, and a separate outhouse were all part of the 10-acre Sonoma County parcel, while renovation of the main house remained a future project.

The building de Lisle actually transformed

When de Lisle and Dennis acquired the property, the Bro-jo was in poor condition. The shed was sinking into the ground and needed major structural reinforcement before its appearance could be reconsidered. Its previous interior had black walls, a large red-and-black yin-yang painted on the floor, plastic Buddhas, and a DJ booth. Dirty mattresses, a rusted claw-foot tub, and clothing stuffed into the walls and ceiling as insulation made the place feel improvised rather than habitable.

De Lisle recalled that people had been sleeping there and growing marijuana. He summarized the atmosphere with the line, “It was like a satanist yoga den.” That colorful description belongs to the former condition; it is not a description of the finished retreat.

The property around the shed also demanded attention. A previous owner’s ambitious garden had gone unattended, allowing non-native plants to spread. The team removed what the feature describes as seven giant semitruck dumpsters of trash. That cleanup matters to the design story because the retreat was not created on a blank, manicured site. It emerged from repair, clearing, and selective reuse.

Repair came before the visual makeover

The Bro-jo’s first decisive change was structural. De Lisle said the shed was sinking, and the published feature reports that it required major reinforcement. The article does not provide engineering drawings, permit records, foundation dimensions, or a construction sequence, so the exact repair method cannot be reconstructed from the account.

That limitation is important for anyone treating the project as painting inspiration. A new color or finish could not have solved a building that was moving into the ground. The visual work followed the basic requirement that the shed become stable enough to use. De Lisle described his pace as, “I like rolling fast, down, and dirty,” but speed did not replace the need to address the failing structure.

He also called the project “a play space” and said, “This was really a play space for me, so there wasn’t much planning.” Those comments explain the informal character of the result, not a recommendation to skip professional assessment on a compromised building. The feature supplies no technical specification that would make the Bro-jo a construction manual.

Paint and plywood supplied the new identity

Once the shed had been reinforced, de Lisle relied on a small number of legible moves: paint, plywood, and salvaged redwood-framed windows from a nearby former Air Force base. Together, they gave the building what the feature calls a new plywood envelope. The gallery also identifies a utilitarian plywood cabinet and a refrigerator covered in the same material.

For a painting-focused reader, the significance is that paint was not treated as a decorative rescue applied to every surface. It worked alongside a plainly expressed material. Plywood established the rough, economical field; paint supplied a controlled finish and helped the repaired shed read as a deliberate environment rather than a patched relic. The source credits Benjamin Moore paint, but it does not identify a color name, sheen, primer, plywood grade, thickness, supplier, fastening pattern, or exposure rating.

Why the plain surfaces feel intentional

The bath pavilion’s plywood walls are compared in the feature to the unpretentious quality of early Frank Gehry interiors. That comparison points to an attitude rather than a historical claim: ordinary sheet material can carry architectural character when its edges, proportions, and relationship to objects are allowed to remain visible.

De Lisle’s approach avoids making the plywood compete with a complicated finish schedule. The material appears on the building envelope and in functional pieces, while collected furnishings provide contrast. A painter can read that as a lesson in hierarchy: let one inexpensive surface establish the background, then use paint and a few singular objects to control where attention goes.

What the published account does not establish

The feature does not say whether every plywood surface was painted, which areas remained exposed, or how the material was protected from Sonoma weather. It also does not report the wall assembly, insulation, ventilation, moisture control, or fire-rating decisions. Those details should be resolved by a qualified designer, contractor, or building official on any real renovation rather than inferred from photographs.

Salvage made the envelope personal

The redwood-framed windows came from a nearby former Air Force base. Their reuse gives the shed a local connection and keeps the new work from looking like a package of recently purchased components. The windows are one of the clearest examples of the project’s governing method: repair what must be repaired, then look for available material with a history.

The same principle appears in the furnishings. De Lisle said, “There’s a bunch of stuff I’ve had for years, things I just held on to or couldn’t sell because they’re a little worn or bent.” He followed with, “Basically, it’s like a fancy yard sale.” The phrase captures why the rooms do not read as a coordinated showroom. Wear, age, and personal attachment are part of the selection criteria.

A collected interior instead of a matching furniture suite

The main cabin combines pieces from different periods and makers. The feature’s gallery identifies the following objects:

Area or use Reported furnishings and finishes How they function in the composition
Seating Hans Wegner loveseat upholstered in Maharam wool; Bruno Mathsson chaise longue; Gaetano Pesce chair Different silhouettes and upholstery textures keep the room from feeling uniform.
Sleeping and lounging Charlotte Perriand-inspired daybeds in Schumacher fabric; vintage Moroccan rugs Low, relaxed pieces reinforce the retreat’s informal purpose while the rugs add pattern and age.
Heat and light Jøtul stove; vintage Luminator floor lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni Useful equipment and sculptural lighting share the room with the rougher architectural shell.
Dining Table from de Lisle’s childhood home; vintage Josef Hoffmann bentwood chairs A family-held table anchors the dining area, while the chairs introduce a distinct historic design language.
Decorative lighting Charles de Lisle lamp for The Future Perfect A personal design credit gives the otherwise utilitarian setting a concentrated visual accent.

These are editorial credits, not evidence of current stock, prices, or a prescribed shopping list. Their importance lies in the mix: a childhood table can sit beside recognized modernist seating, and a worn object can remain valuable because it belongs to the owner’s history.

The freestanding bath pavilion has a different rhythm

A separate bath pavilion was part of the early work. It is not simply another room inside the Bro-jo, and its design is more composed even though it uses the same plain-material vocabulary. The walls are quotidian plywood. An antique Japanese tansu provides storage and visual weight, while a knotty-pine divider from de Lisle’s former office was repurposed as a partition.

The object list in the pavilion includes a vintage Bas van Pelt rope chair, a handmade galvanized-steel table, an Isamu Noguchi lamp, a Jordan McDonald Studio ceramic mirror, and a vessel by Matthias Kaiser. Kohler fixtures were added to an existing cast-concrete mop sink, and the bathing centerpiece is a Japanese cedar soaking tub.

Paint is credited to Benjamin Moore here as well, but the published feature does not specify the color or finish.

The landscape is part of the retreat, not a backdrop

The finished experience extends beyond the shed walls. Gallery views describe California oaks and native grasses, a concrete pool deck embedded with local rocks, and solar panels. These elements connect the rebuilt structure to the acreage that had to be cleared and repaired.

The account does not provide an energy-production figure, an efficiency study, or technical information about the solar installation. Its significance in the project is visual and spatial: the retreat is presented as a place embedded in a working landscape rather than an isolated object photographed without context.

What a painter can take from the project

Establish the substrate before choosing color

The Bro-jo demonstrates a sequence that is easy to overlook in image-led makeovers. A sinking structure was reinforced before paint and built-ins were considered. On a real property, inspect movement, water entry, rot, and attachment points first. A finish can clarify sound work; it cannot stabilize a failing wall or floor.

Use one honest material to organize many objects

Plywood appears as an envelope, cabinet material, and refrigerator cladding. Because that background is simple, the Wegner, Mathsson, Pesce, Hoffmann, and other pieces can remain distinct. A painter can achieve a similar effect by choosing a restrained base treatment and resisting the urge to give every surface a separate color story.

Let salvage guide the palette and proportion

The Air Force-base windows and the reused knotty-pine divider were not selected from a single catalog. Their dimensions and patina likely influenced how the rooms were composed, although the feature does not document a measured design process. When working with salvaged elements, design around what is actually available rather than forcing old material into a predetermined scheme.

Keep the finish schedule evidence-based

The project is useful inspiration, but it does not disclose paint color, sheen, primer, coating thickness, or exterior durability. Those choices depend on substrate, exposure, moisture, and local code. Treat the photographs as a study in contrast between plain surfaces and collected objects, not as proof that a particular product or application method will perform in another building.

What the project does—and does not—promise

De Lisle said he did not need permission for anything, calling that “incredibly liberating.” That statement describes his experience of this private creative project; it should not be read as general permission to bypass permits, zoning, historic review, health requirements, or safety inspections. The published feature contains no permit details or independent evaluation of the building’s performance.

Nor does the story establish a repeatable budget, construction timeline, or product specification. It records one designer’s renovation of a shed on a 10-acre property, reported by Mayer Rus for Architectural Digest in 2022 and photographed by Eric Petschek with styling by Dung Ngo. The project’s lasting lesson is more durable than any missing specification: structural honesty, reused material, a controlled painted backdrop, and objects with personal history can turn a compromised outbuilding into a convincing retreat.
