A Clivus Multrum continuous composting toilet sends fresh waste into an active chamber, where carbon-rich bulking material, airflow and microorganisms support aerobic decomposition. Unlike a batch toilet, it is designed for ongoing use while older material moves toward a separate end-product area for later inspection and removal.
“Waterless” means normal flushing and processing do not require water, chemicals or applied heat. It does not mean the installation is maintenance-free: the chamber needs suitable ventilation, moisture, moderate temperatures, bulking material, adequate holding time and safe service access. Australian buyers and designers should confirm the model’s intended load, layout, approvals and operating instructions before specifying it.

Clivus Multrum is a continuous composting arrangement rather than a set of alternating containers. New material enters the active end of a chamber while older material remains in the composting environment for progressively longer. The system design provides a separate end-product area so material can be inspected and removed without taking the toilet out of service.
That operating pattern matters when comparing systems. A batch toilet fills one container, then rests while a second container is used. A continuous system stays available as material advances through the chamber, but it still needs a planned route for ventilation, inspection and removal. Australian Government YourHome describes continuous systems this way and warns that a composting mass can compact and become difficult to remove if the installation or operation does not allow it to move as intended.

How the chamber turns waste into compost
Fresh waste enters an active pile
The Clivus Multrum operation manual (revision M-203 Rev C, 19 November 2014) describes waste entering a chamber with carbon-rich material such as wood shavings. Bulking material absorbs liquid, creates voids for air and contributes carbon to the carbon-to-nitrogen balance. The exact material specification is model-dependent, so use the current manual for the unit you are buying rather than assuming any wood product is suitable.
Air channels and baffles support aerobic decomposition
Air channels and baffles help air reach the pile. Microorganisms then decompose organic material aerobically. The process is not a sealed, dry-storage system: adequate air, sufficient moisture and moderate temperature are necessary conditions. A ventilation route is therefore part of the sanitation system, not an optional accessory. The toilet, chamber and vent must be designed together so replacement air can enter and warm, odour-laden air can leave.

Time in the compost environment is part of treatment
The manual explains that pathogen reduction depends on exposure to the compost environment for sufficient time. It says the unit is designed to provide that exposure when operated according to the manual. This is not a blanket assurance that every material removed is automatically safe to handle, spread or use. Follow the current operating instructions, keep people away from unverified material, and check local health or environmental guidance before deciding what to do with end product.
Material gradually reaches the end-product area
In a functioning continuous pile, older material progresses toward the end-product section. Removal is a service task: the access door, working space, lighting, ventilation and route for carrying material out should be considered during design. If the pile compacts or fails to move, access may be needed to correct the condition rather than simply waiting for the system to recover.
What “waterless” does—and does not—promise
Under normal use, the Clivus manual states that no water, chemicals or applied heat are needed. That can eliminate flush-water demand and reduce the need for a sewer connection, which is useful at remote or water-constrained sites. The statement describes the process requirements; it is not a promise of zero inputs or zero upkeep.

- Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.
- Air: the chamber needs a deliberate ventilation path and unobstructed air movement.
- Moisture: decomposition needs sufficient moisture; a pile that is too dry or too wet may not perform as intended.
- Temperature: moderate conditions support biological activity. An exposed chamber in a cold climate may need a different design response from one inside a temperate building.
- Carbon-rich bulking: wood shavings are given as an example in the manual. Confirm particle size, cleanliness and replenishment instructions for the selected model.
- Holding time: treatment depends on material remaining in the compost environment long enough under the prescribed operating conditions.
- Access: inspection and removal provisions are required even though no flushing water is used.
For these reasons, claims such as “maintenance-free,” “odour-free” or universally “safe compost” are not appropriate. Performance depends on the complete installation and on how it is operated.
Continuous versus batch systems
| Characteristic | Continuous chamber | Batch container system |
|---|---|---|
| Use pattern | Fresh waste enters while older material remains in the chamber. | One container is used while another rests or cures. |
| End-product handling | Material is gradually removed from a separate end-product area as the design allows. | A full container is taken out or isolated for its resting period. |
| Space and access question | Requires a chamber, vent route and service access that allow the pile to advance and material to be removed. | Requires room to store, rotate and access multiple containers. |
| Main operational risk | Material can compact or fail to move, making removal difficult. | Containers can be overfilled, exchanged at the wrong time or removed before adequate resting. |
Neither arrangement is automatically suitable for every site. Choose according to occupancy, building layout, climate, service access and the authority’s requirements.
Choosing a model: what the published numbers mean
CM8’s 8,000-use figure
The Clivus Multrum manual explains that the numeral in its commercial or public model designation indicates rated annual uses, using CM8 as the example. CM8 is therefore described as rated for 8,000 uses per year in a commercial or public facility. That is a model rating in the manual’s stated context, not a universal throughput guarantee and not a residential recommendation. “Uses” must not be casually converted into a number of household occupants without the supplier’s sizing method.
CM8 Next Gen and CM14 Next Gen
Ecoflo Australia currently lists CM8 Next Gen and CM14 Next Gen composting tanks and references AS/NZS 1546.2:2008 on those supplier pages. Treat that reference as a prompt to verify the current certificate, the exact model scope and the installation manual. Standards references and product pages can change; ask for the documents that apply to the edition and jurisdiction you are specifying.
| Selection item | What is established | What you must confirm |
|---|---|---|
| CM8 capacity | 8,000 uses per year, stated for commercial/public facilities in the 19 November 2014 manual. | Whether the rating fits your occupancy pattern, peak loads and intended setting. |
| CM14 capacity | A CM14 model is listed by Ecoflo Australia; a definitive capacity figure was not stated in the supplied material. | Current rated users, design calculations and any limits in the latest manual. |
| Dimensions and layout | No current definitive dimension comparison was provided. | Tank footprint, height, pipe runs, slope, vent route, access-door clearance and lifting/removal path. |
| Compliance | Supplier pages reference AS/NZS 1546.2:2008. | Current certificates, installation conditions and approval status for your state, territory and site. |
Do not select a tank by model number alone. Give the supplier an occupancy schedule, building use, climate, proposed toilet locations, available fall and service constraints, then obtain a written sizing recommendation.

Site checks before you specify the system
1. Establish the intended use and peak load
List permanent occupants, visitors, staff, seasonal surges and events. A remote home used by two people has a different loading pattern from a campground, school, worksite or public facility. Record the busiest day as well as the annual average; biological systems must cope with both loading and periods of low use.
2. Map the toilet-to-chamber connection
Confirm where each pedestal can sit relative to the tank. Check pipe length, slope, bends, clean-outs and the possibility of blockages. A split-level or sloping site may allow a gravity connection, but the actual route must be checked against the selected system’s installation manual.
3. Reserve ventilation space
Draw the vent route before finalising the room layout. Identify termination height, weather protection, penetrations, replacement-air paths and access for cleaning or inspection. Do not bury a vent in a wall or roof assembly without a way to verify that it remains open.
4. Design the service route
Provide an access door or hatch, standing room, lighting and a path for tools and removed material. Check whether a wheelbarrow, bin or other handling equipment can reach the service point. If the tank is below a building, make sure the route does not require entering an unsafe confined space.
5. Account for climate and moisture
Discuss winter temperatures, shading, flooding risk and groundwater with the designer and supplier. The process needs moderate temperature and sufficient moisture; a site that is unusually cold, wet or dry may need a different configuration or operating plan.

6. Confirm consumables and storage
Plan where bulking material will be kept dry and accessible. The manual names wood shavings as an example, but it does not establish that every product sold under that description is suitable. Obtain the approved material specification and estimate annual consumption.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Australian approvals and documentation
YourHome notes that some commercially available waterless toilet systems are approved in most parts of Australia, but approval does not apply to every product or every site. The responsible authority may be a state or territory plumbing regulator, local council, building surveyor or environmental-health authority, depending on the project.
Before ordering, ask the supplier for:
- the current installation and operation manual for the exact model;
- current certificates or conformity evidence and the scope of any AS/NZS 1546.2:2008 reference;
- tank, pedestal, vent and pipe requirements;
- design limits, rated loading method and maintenance intervals;
- instructions for handling and disposing of end product; and
- the documents your approving authority expects with the application.
Submit the complete design, not just a product brochure. Include a site plan, building use, occupancy assumptions, tank location, ventilation, access arrangements and the proposed management of removed material. Obtain written approval before construction where the authority requires it.

Operating and maintenance routine
At each use
Use only the materials and practices permitted by the current manual. Keep non-compostable products, excess chemicals and cleaning agents out of the system unless the manufacturer expressly allows them. Add the specified bulking material at the prescribed rate so the pile retains structure and the carbon balance remains appropriate.
Regular inspection
Inspect the vent path, visible pile condition, moisture balance and access area. Look for blocked air channels, unusual wetness, excessive dryness, insects, leakage or odour changes. An odour problem is a diagnostic signal to check airflow, moisture, loading and bulking—not proof that the system is inherently odour-free.

When material does not advance
Compaction can prevent material from moving toward the end-product area. Stop treating the chamber as self-correcting: follow the manual’s procedure for restoring movement, and use the service access designed for that purpose. If the cause is unclear, have the supplier or trained installer inspect it.
Removing end product
Remove material only according to the model’s instructions and the authority’s guidance. Holding time and operating conditions affect pathogen reduction. Wear the protective equipment specified by the operator’s risk assessment, keep unverified material away from food-growing areas and watercourses, and document when and how material was handled.

Common specification mistakes and their fixes
- Choosing by household headcount alone: use the supplier’s loading method, including visitors and peak days.
- Assuming “waterless” means no ventilation: design the vent and replacement-air path before approval.
- Leaving removal access until construction: show the access door, standing area and handling route on the drawings.
- Buying generic shavings: match the bulking material to the current model manual.
- Treating the 8,000-use figure as universal: keep its commercial/public context and 2014 manual date attached.
- Using the 90% reduction claim as a guarantee: a Whanganui District Council project document, indexed as published around 2024, reports that figure as a Clivus Multrum claim. It is vendor-derived, not an independently verified statistic for every installation.
- Assuming a standards reference equals approval: verify the current certificate and jurisdiction-specific conditions.
When this system is a good fit—and when to reconsider
A continuous Clivus Multrum arrangement can suit a remote home, public facility or low-water project where a sewer connection is impractical, a chamber can be located correctly and an operator can perform inspections and removals. It is less suitable where there is no viable vent route, no safe service access, highly variable loading that has not been modelled, or an authority that will not approve the proposed configuration.
The deciding question is not simply whether the toilet uses water. It is whether the site can provide the biological conditions, airflow, space, maintenance access, management plan and approvals that continuous composting requires.
