How Color and Light Opened Up a 300-Square-Foot East German Cottage

A 1964 lakeside cottage near Potsdam feels larger after walls were removed, a broad kitchen window was added and a bold, coordinated palette tied the compact rooms together.

A 300-square-foot weekend cottage at Germany’s Netzener See now feels larger because its owners changed the sequence of rooms, removed selected interior walls, added a broad kitchen window and let one compact counter perform several jobs. The makeover, reported by Architectural Digest on March 10, 2025, pairs a tightly edited floor plan with an unusually confident palette: light blue and yellow walls, pink cabinets, an eggplant worktop, deep red bathroom tile and black grout.

What the cottage was—and what changed

Julia Carloff-Winkelmann and Jan Winkelmann bought the cottage as a weekend retreat in a lakeside holiday community southwest of Potsdam. The home was built in 1964 and is one of 45 bungalows in the enclave. The property includes a 4,300-square-foot garden, but the interior itself measures only 300 square feet, so every wall, opening and piece of furniture has an outsized effect on daily life.

Before the renovation, the entry opened directly into a living room with a kitchenette. Beyond it were a bedroom with a sleeping alcove and a bathroom. The owners removed interior walls to make the sequence more open rather than preserving a series of small compartments. A new, extra-wide window above the kitchenette brings daylight deeper into the main room. The outside remains plain white beneath a shed roof, while the interior carries the visual drama.

The plan in one glance

Element Reported condition or change Why it matters in this small footprint
Entry and living room Entry opens directly into the living area with a kitchenette There is no separate foyer consuming floor area
Interior walls Selected walls were removed The rooms read as a connected sequence instead of isolated boxes
Kitchen window Extra-wide window added above the kitchenette More daylight reaches the central living zone
Dining surface Counter extends from the living-room windowsill Meals and occasional work do not require a separate table
Bedroom and bath Bedroom includes a sleeping alcove; bathroom remains a distinct room Essential functions fit without adding another full-size room

This is a report about one property, not a measured study of small-home design. The feature does not establish that the same layout will work in every cottage, nor does it rank open plans against other approaches.

How the makeover creates a sense of space

Opening the circulation path

Removing walls did more than increase visible floor area. It changed the way someone moves from the entry through the living room and kitchenette toward the bedroom and bath. Sightlines can make a compact home feel less interrupted, while the sleeping alcove preserves a degree of separation where privacy matters. The result is an open interior without turning every function into one undifferentiated room.

Using the window as architecture and furniture

The broad new window is a daylight intervention, but its lower edge also becomes part of the furnishing strategy. The couple extended a counter from the living-room windowsill, creating a place to eat and an occasional work surface. Because the counter occupies an edge that might otherwise be difficult to furnish, it avoids the circulation loss of a freestanding dining table. Stools tuck along the counter when the surface is not in use.

Keeping the floor visually continuous

A light gray terrazzo floor runs through the living room and bedroom. In a small plan, a continuous finish can reduce the visual stops created by thresholds and changes in material. Here, the flooring helps the rooms read as related spaces even though the sleeping area and bathroom still have distinct functions. Jan laid the terrazzo himself, according to the feature; that detail describes this project’s labor, not a guarantee that terrazzo installation is suitable for every do-it-yourself renovation.

The color strategy: bright, compact and deliberately bold

The owners did not rely on white to make the cottage feel larger. They selected light blue and yellow walls, pink kitchen cabinets, an eggplant-colored worktop, and deep red bathroom tile with black grout and fittings. The palette is high-contrast, yet the repeated color relationships and continuous gray floor keep it from feeling random. Architectural Digest describes the color and layout decisions as a joint effort to make the compact interior feel open, bright and summery.

Light blue and yellow walls

Light blue and yellow establish the main-room atmosphere without requiring a neutral envelope. In this cottage, the colors are part of a coordinated composition that includes the window, floor and kitchen. They should be understood as the Winkelmanns’ choices for this particular light and setting, not as universal “small room” paint rules. A different orientation, window size or existing finish could change how the same pigments appear.

Pink cabinetry and an eggplant worktop

The pink kitchen cabinets make the kitchenette a visual feature rather than something intended to disappear. A cabinetmaker produced the custom linoleum worktop in an eggplant shade. That pairing gives the compact kitchen a clear identity while the gray terrazzo below supplies a quieter, unifying surface. The cabinetry is from IKEA; the metal handles are from Toniton. The article names those sources as part of the home’s specification, not as a product test or endorsement.

Deep red tile with black details

Deep red bathroom tile, black grout and black fittings create a more enveloping room than the pale colors used in the living area. The contrast is concentrated in the bathroom, so the strongest dark accents do not dominate the entire cottage. Because the feature provides no installation specifications, maintenance data or durability testing, readers should treat the bathroom finish as a visual reference only.

Furniture and lighting that respect the footprint

The extended counter is paired with stools from Tiptoe. Their role is practical: they provide seating at the window without introducing a full dining set. The feature also identifies a Tom Dixon-designed Melt ceiling lamp in the living room and an Ixa light designed by Foster + Partners for Artemide above the kitchen. These are named pieces in this home, not a comparison of lighting products.

The couple used physical mock-ups while deciding on fixtures. Jan reportedly hung a bucket from the ceiling to judge the size of a pendant and decided the proposed fixture would be too large. That simple test illustrates a useful design question for a low-area room: how much visual and physical volume can a fitting occupy before it obstructs movement or overwhelms the ceiling? The story does not provide ceiling height, wattage, brightness measurements or a lighting plan.

A practical selection checklist drawn from the project

  • Measure the clearance needed to walk past a counter before choosing stool depth.
  • Use a full-size paper or cardboard mock-up to test a pendant’s apparent size and head clearance.
  • Check how cabinet, worktop, wall and floor colors interact in both daylight and evening light.
  • Keep the number of major finishes limited enough that a continuous floor or sightline can connect them.

What the owners did themselves—and where professionals joined in

Jan carried out substantial work, including taking down interior walls and laying the terrazzo flooring. An architect friend proposed adding the window, and a structural engineer helped assess whether the existing walls could support the changes. The 1960s electrical system required complete replacement, for which the couple sought professional assistance.

This combination matters because the visible result can make a renovation look deceptively straightforward. Wall removal can affect load paths, weather resistance and services hidden inside partitions. Electrical replacement involves safety requirements that are not addressed by a paint or decorating plan. The feature records who helped on this cottage; it does not certify that a reader can safely repeat any task without local assessment.

Permits are location-specific

Jan consulted an older manual titled Permit-Free Building Projects to understand which measures might be possible without a building permit. The article does not identify the manual’s author, edition, publisher or current availability. It also says that other work requires an architect and that paperwork can take time. Those comments describe the owners’ process in Germany and should not be treated as current legal guidance for another property, municipality or country. Before altering walls, windows, structure, plumbing or electrical systems, consult the authority and licensed professionals responsible for your address.

Why the makeover works as a painting story

For a painting-focused reader, the cottage demonstrates that color can organize a plan as effectively as it decorates one. The walls, cabinetry, worktop, tile, grout and floor are selected as a group. The light gray terrazzo gives the eye a stable route through the living room and bedroom, while stronger colors identify zones: the pink kitchenette, the blue-and-yellow living envelope and the red bathroom.

The project also shows why paint cannot compensate for every planning problem. The larger window and removed walls changed daylight and circulation before color was applied. The counter solved a furniture problem by using an existing edge. Paint then reinforced those decisions, rather than carrying the whole burden of making the cottage feel spacious.

Questions to ask before copying the palette

  • Where does daylight enter, and which surfaces will receive it directly?
  • Which room or function should become the visual anchor?
  • Can one floor or ceiling finish connect adjacent areas?
  • Will dark grout, colored cabinetry or a saturated worktop require more frequent cleaning or touch-up?
  • Are existing walls, floors and electrical circuits sound enough for the planned work?

The answers depend on the building. The Netzener See cottage’s colors are evidence of one successful composition, not a formula that guarantees spaciousness in every 300-square-foot home.

A room-by-room reading of the finished cottage

Living room

The living room receives the entry, the kitchenette and the main visual sequence. Light blue and yellow walls keep the space lively, while the terrazzo floor reduces the sense of separate zones. The Melt ceiling lamp supplies a focal point, but the owners tested its scale before committing to a fixture.

Kitchenette and window counter

The extra-wide window is positioned above the kitchenette. Pink cabinets, an eggplant linoleum worktop and metal handles give the compact run of storage a strong identity. The counter continues from the living-room windowsill, functioning as dining space and an occasional desk. Stools provide seating without the footprint of a table.

Bedroom and sleeping alcove

The bedroom follows the living area and includes a sleeping alcove. Its connection to the light gray terrazzo floor helps maintain visual continuity after the walls were removed, while the alcove keeps the bed from becoming the first object seen from the entry.

Bathroom

Deep red tile, black grout and black fittings distinguish the bathroom from the lighter main room. The concentrated palette makes the smallest private room feel intentional rather than leftover, although the feature does not report tile dimensions, waterproofing details or maintenance performance.

Takeaways for planning a similarly small retreat

  1. Map movement before selecting finishes. Identify the entry, kitchen, sleeping area and bathroom, then remove or retain partitions only after structural and services checks.
  2. Look for an edge that can do two jobs. A windowsill or counter can become dining and work space when circulation remains clear.
  3. Use daylight as part of the color plan. Test large samples where the sun actually reaches the walls; the cottage’s broad kitchen window is a major part of its brightness.
  4. Connect rooms with one recurring surface. The light gray terrazzo links living room and bedroom while allowing the bathroom to have its own finish.
  5. Test scale in three dimensions. A full-size mock-up can reveal that a pendant, stool or cabinet is too large before it is installed.
  6. Separate visual ambition from technical risk. Bold colors are a design decision; wall removal, window changes and electrical replacement require appropriate professional and local approval checks.

The makeover’s lesson is not that every tiny cottage needs pink cabinets or red tile. It is that a small interior can gain coherence when planning, daylight, circulation and color are solved together. In this East German weekend home, the owners’ open sequence, window-side counter and continuous floor give the palette room to work—and the palette, in turn, makes each compact zone feel deliberate.
