Corian® Solid Surface is the finish specified for Battlesticks Bar at Scratchleys in Newcastle, Australia. The harbour-side renovation uses it on the curving main bar, custom furniture and other finishing details, giving the venue a continuous contemporary look while addressing a difficult coastal setting.
CASF’s project account describes a site exposed to wind, salt and sun, with large doors and windows opened to move sea air through the room. The specification therefore had to balance visual control, curved fabrication, clean detailing and the practical demands of a busy hospitality interior. The project page names Glacier White and Serene Sage, but does not identify which colour appears on each individual surface.

The material specified for Battlesticks Bar
Battlesticks Bar forms part of Scratchleys on Newcastle’s harbour waterfront. For this project, the specified finish was Corian® Solid Surface, a fabricated solid-surface material rather than a loose countertop product or a decorative paint system. CASF’s case-study page says Corian® was selected for its visual design flexibility, durability and seamless finishes.
That rationale belongs to this particular project description. It is not a published comparative test showing that Corian® outperforms every other bar material, and the available project information does not include a measured service life, maintenance log, cost or performance benchmark. The documented outcome is a design-led commercial installation in which the material helped the team create a flowing, contemporary interior under coastal exposure.

Why the harbour setting mattered
The bar is not a sealed, climate-neutral room. CASF describes the venue as vulnerable to “the wind, salt and sun,” and notes that doors and windows run from the ceiling to the floor. Those openings allow sea-breeze circulation and natural ventilation, but they also make the interior more directly connected to the local marine environment.
For a bar, that exposure affects more than the appearance of a wall. A front counter, table edge or furniture panel may be touched, wiped, splashed and examined at close range every day. Airborne salt, bright sunlight and changing humidity are part of the context in which finishes must remain visually coherent. The project narrative says the chosen material needed to withstand local conditions over a long period; it does not publish a numerical weathering test or a guaranteed lifespan for the Battlesticks installation.

Natural ventilation as a design constraint
The open doors and windows are part of the architectural experience, not a defect to be hidden. They frame harbour views and let breezes pass through the venue. That openness makes a visually calm material palette useful: uninterrupted surfaces and restrained joints can keep the room from feeling visually fragmented while the waterfront remains the dominant view.
Corian® was consequently considered alongside the way the space is occupied. The source does not claim that the material controls indoor temperature, blocks salt air or replaces a maintenance programme. Its documented role is as a durable, clean-lined finish within a naturally ventilated hospitality environment.

How the specification supports a curved contemporary design
The centrepiece is the curving main bar. Curves are difficult to resolve when a finish relies on many standard boards, visible fasteners or abrupt changes at every corner. A fabricated solid surface can be shaped into a designed profile, allowing the bar front, counter and adjoining details to read as one composed form. CASF identifies the ability to create seamless finishes as a significant reason for the specification.
Seam control and visual continuity
“Seamless” does not mean that a large commercial counter is made from one unbroken piece. It means joints can be planned, fabricated and finished so they are inconspicuous in the completed surface. The Battlesticks page does not disclose the bar’s dimensions, edge profile, seam locations, reinforcement or finish level, so those details should not be inferred from photographs alone.
The visual benefit is architectural: the eye can follow the bar’s sweep without being interrupted by a patchwork of unrelated materials. That continuity also lets furniture and smaller finishing details belong to the same design language rather than appearing as individually selected fixtures.
Custom furniture and finishing details
The project account says Corian® was used beyond the main counter, including custom furniture and finishing surface details throughout the space. Its application list also includes decorative cladding. This broader use matters because a contemporary interior depends on relationships between surfaces: a bar top that looks modern but meets conventional, visually unrelated furniture would produce a different effect from one in which several touchpoints share a material vocabulary.

Neither the project page nor the available specification information identifies every item made from Corian®, so it is safer to describe these as documented categories rather than assign the material to a particular table, shelf or wall element.
Which Corian colours were used?
Two colours are named in the project material: Glacier White and Serene Sage. A brochure result associated both colours with the project worksurfaces, while CASF’s project page lists Glacier White in its colour information. The available evidence does not establish which colour was installed on the bar, on furniture or on any specific cladding panel.

| Colour | What can be said confidently | What remains unknown |
|---|---|---|
| Glacier White | Named by the project information as a Corian® colour used in connection with the works | The exact surface or location is not identified |
| Serene Sage | Associated with the project worksurfaces in brochure material | The exact surface or location is not identified |
This distinction is important when reading project photography. Lighting, reflections, camera processing and surrounding colours can change how a solid surface appears. A photograph may suggest a placement, but it is not a substitute for a finish schedule. Anyone attempting to reproduce the palette should request current colour samples and a fabricator-ready specification rather than assume that the lighter or greener tone belongs to a particular component.
What Corian’s general food-service guidance adds
Corian’s manufacturer guidance describes the solid surface as nonporous, durable and easy to clean, and identifies food-service applications such as bar tops, serving counters and beverage stations, table tops, food-preparation areas, and wall or counter cladding. The guidance also says the surface can be renewed if scratched.

Those are general manufacturer statements. They explain why a designer might consider the material for a hospitality project, but they are not independent laboratory results and do not document how often Battlesticks has been cleaned, repaired or refinished. The project source itself supplies a qualitative rationale—durability, visual flexibility and seamless finishes—rather than a maintenance record.
Cleaning implications for a working bar
A nonporous, cleanable surface can simplify routine wipe-downs, especially around serving points where moisture and food residue are expected. It does not eliminate the need to follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions, protect the surface from unsuitable chemicals or repair damage correctly. Nor does it make every adjoining material equally resistant; grout, hardware, timber, paint and sealants still require their own care.
Renewability is not immunity
The manufacturer’s statement that a scratched surface can be renewed describes a repair possibility, not a promise that damage will never occur. Heavy impacts, heat, abrasive products and poorly chosen cleaners can still mark a counter. The Battlesticks information gives no count of repairs or record of incidents, so long-term behaviour at this venue should not be presented as measured evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How a custom bar surface is normally specified
Corian’s specification tool provides useful general context for a made-to-size bar. It describes choosing the bar’s dimensions and shape, selecting edge details and finish, planning inconspicuous joints, and adding reinforcement where seams face heavier loads. These are specification principles, not disclosed details of the Battlesticks build.

- Survey the room. Record walls, columns, service routes, door swings, ventilation openings and the clearances needed for staff and customers.
- Define the bar geometry. Set the radius or sequence of curves, counter depth, working height, overhangs and transitions to adjacent furniture. Curves should be resolved in drawings rather than improvised on site.
- Choose the visible finish. Confirm the colour, sheen, edge profile and how the finish will look in daylight, artificial light and reflected harbour light. For Battlesticks, Glacier White and Serene Sage are documented options, but their locations are not published.
- Plan joints and support. Identify where pieces meet, how joints will be made inconspicuous and where reinforcement is needed for equipment, overhangs or high-load areas.
- Coordinate services. Allow for sinks, taps, refrigeration, ice wells, electrical outlets, drainage and access panels before fabrication begins.
- Approve full-size information. Use shop drawings, templates and finish samples to confirm the curve, edge and colour before production. The project page does not publish Battlesticks’ drawings or dimensions.
- Install and inspect. Check alignment, joint visibility, edge protection, service penetrations and the transition to other materials, then hand over the approved cleaning routine to the venue team.
What the project does—and does not—prove
Battlesticks is a useful example of material selection under a specific set of design pressures: a marine-adjacent site, natural ventilation, a curved focal element, frequent public contact and a desire for a contemporary finish. It demonstrates that a solid surface can be integrated across a bar and associated furniture as part of one interior concept.
It does not provide a head-to-head comparison with stainless steel, stone, timber, laminate or another competing finish. No source reviewed for the project reports comparative salt-spray results, measured colour retention, cleaning frequency, replacement costs or a quantified service-life advantage. Those questions require separate technical data and project records.
Who delivered the Battlesticks Bar work?
The project credits EJE Architecture with design, PDA Building as builder, Vogue Joinery as fabricator and Nathan Dawes as photographer. These credits identify the principal participants named on the project page; they do not, by themselves, describe each company’s contractual scope or confirm who installed every Corian® component.
What is useful for another coastal hospitality project?
The strongest transferable lesson is to begin with the room’s operating conditions, not with a colour board. A venue that opens onto a harbour has different exposure, cleaning patterns and daylight than an enclosed suburban bar. The design team should document wind, salt, sun, ventilation, splash zones, customer contact and service loads, then ask whether the proposed finish can be fabricated in the required form and maintained by the operator.
- Match the form to the fabrication method: a flowing counter needs accurate templates, planned seams and adequate support.
- Separate appearance from performance claims: request technical data for chemical resistance, heat, impact and repair rather than relying on a photograph.
- Test the palette in the actual light: waterfront daylight can make white and green tones read differently from a showroom sample.
- Specify the whole interface: counter, cladding, furniture, hardware, sealants and service penetrations must work together.
- Write the maintenance handover: identify approved cleaners, stain response, heat protection and the process for professional renewal.
At Battlesticks, those decisions produced the contemporary finish described by CASF while preserving the openness that connects the bar to Newcastle Harbour. The evidence supports that design reading; it does not justify broader claims about every Corian® installation or every coastal venue.
