How Crisp House Reconciles a Restored 1850s Cottage With a New Collingwood Addition

Crisp House pairs a carefully restored 1850s transportable timber cottage with a contemporary ironbark-clad upper level and roof terrace, showing how heritage constraints can produce a clear, light-filled family home.

Crisp House in Collingwood, Melbourne, shows how a tightly controlled heritage cottage can gain practical family space without disguising what is old and what is new. Robert Nichol & sons retained and repaired the transportable timber cottage the architect dates to the 1850s, then placed a clearly contemporary upper level and roof terrace above and behind it. The result depends on contrast: restored weatherboards, windows and veranda details remain legible at the original level, while vertical ironbark boards, steel, plywood and large areas of glass define the addition.

The project was completed in 2015, according to the architect. ArchDaily lists 2017 as the project-entry year and gives an area of 200 m². Those dates describe different things: completion and publication, not two competing completion dates.

A heritage cottage shaped the whole design brief

The architect identifies the original house as a transportable timber cottage sent from England in the 1850s. That history matters architecturally because the building was not treated as a neutral shell waiting for a fashionable makeover. It was subject to a strict heritage overlay, and approval followed a protracted planning process at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), as Robert Nichol & sons describes it.

On a constrained inner-city site, the design therefore had to solve two problems at once: preserve the character protected by the overlay and make a small dwelling work for contemporary family life. The approved scheme adds an upper level and a roof terrace rather than spreading a large new footprint across the site. The strategy increases useful space vertically while keeping the original cottage as the primary historical reference.

David Nicholson, quoted by Dwell, places the house in Collingwood’s early suburban history, describing the area as one of the first subdivisions outside Melbourne and a place where industrialists settled. That context helps explain why a modest timber dwelling can carry substantial heritage weight even as its surrounding neighbourhood has intensified.

What was restored in the original cottage

Secondary coverage by Dwell reports a detailed repair and reconstruction program. The weatherboards were reproduced as beaded boards in Baltic pine, so the wall surface could retain the fine profile associated with the cottage rather than being replaced by flat contemporary cladding. Windows were replicated in a cord-and-weight format, preserving both their appearance and their traditional method of operation.

Dwell also reports reinstated veranda posts and decorative timber details. These elements are small in area but large in effect: they restore the threshold, rhythm and shadow lines that make a nineteenth-century cottage read as a complete architectural object. The project’s heritage approach was consequently not limited to keeping a front elevation standing; it sought to recover the components that give that elevation its identity.

Because the restoration details come from Dwell’s account, they should be read as reported documentation of the work rather than as a complete conservation specification. The architect’s own description is strongest on the broader intent: the new work should remain a simple, clean backdrop to a fully restored original cottage.

The addition is deliberately contemporary, not a replica

Robert Nichol & sons says the extension copies the original cottage’s shape and angle. That is a measured form of continuity. The new level follows the geometry that makes the old roof and walls recognisable, but it does not imitate their weatherboards or decorative details.

Instead, the upper volume is clad in vertical ironbark boards. Their darker, more linear expression contrasts with the original weatherboards, allowing a viewer to distinguish the intervention at a glance. This is the central design move at Crisp House: shared proportion and roof logic tie the two parts together, while different materials prevent the addition from pretending to be nineteenth-century fabric.

The architect describes the addition as a “simple clean backdrop” to the restored cottage and says the completed project became a roomy, comfortable family home. That statement is an architectural ambition rather than a measured post-occupancy study, but it clarifies the hierarchy: the extension is support for the old house, not a competing façade.

How the tight site gains space and daylight

ArchDaily lists the project area as 200 m²; it does not provide a floor-area methodology, so the figure should be treated as the published project area rather than a surveyed net internal area. The design makes that amount work harder through stacking, selective glazing and direct access to the roof.

Vertical expansion

Adding an upper level avoids the land consumption that a broad rear extension would require on a compact inner-city allotment. It also keeps the original cottage’s lower-level rooms and street presence intact. The upper storey can carry bedrooms or family functions without the article’s sources assigning specific rooms, and the roof above becomes usable outdoor territory instead of only weather protection.

Glazing as a spatial connector

Dwell reports extensive glazing and north-facing skylights. Large sliding glass doors, also identified in the project description, open the interior toward small outdoor areas and make circulation part of the day-to-day experience. North-facing roof light is especially valuable in Melbourne’s southern-hemisphere setting because it can deliver relatively consistent daylight while reducing reliance on a narrow side opening.

These openings are not presented as a promise of a particular energy rating or measured daylight level; no such performance data is supplied. Their documented role is experiential and spatial: they bring light into a deep, tightly bounded home and visually connect rooms to the outside.

Inside: old-house memory with an exposed structural language

The interior does not attempt to recreate a period cottage throughout. Exposed steel ceiling beams and waxed plywood introduce an unmistakably contemporary palette. Steel makes the new structure readable, while plywood provides a warm, continuous surface that can absorb the visual complexity of an older timber shell.

Large sliding doors reinforce the distinction between inherited fabric and new intervention. Traditional cord-and-weight windows belong to the restored cottage; broad contemporary openings belong to the addition and its outdoor connections. Reading those systems together lets the house show its chronology instead of flattening every room into one stylistic period.

An external stair leads to the roof terrace. Keeping that route outside gives the terrace an independent address and avoids turning the upper-level circulation into a dark internal corridor. It also makes the roof a deliberate destination rather than an incidental service area.

The roof terrace extends a small footprint

The approved design includes a roof terrace, one of the clearest ways Crisp House adds amenity without adding another enclosed wing. On a compact site, a roof can provide sky, planting or gathering space that cannot be found at ground level. The sources do not state the terrace’s dimensions, planting scheme, structural load or furniture, so those details should not be inferred.

Its architectural importance is nevertheless clear. The terrace completes the vertical sequence from the preserved cottage to the new upper level and then outdoors again. The external stair, sliding doors and extensive glazing make that sequence legible: rooms open to small external areas, the upper addition rises above the original roofline, and the roof becomes an occupied landscape.

Reading the project’s key choices

Design question Choice at Crisp House What the documented choice achieves
How can heritage fabric remain identifiable? Restore the cottage’s weatherboards, cord-and-weight windows, veranda posts and decorative timber details, as reported by Dwell. Preserves the visual and material cues that distinguish the original dwelling.
How can new work avoid false historicism? Use vertical ironbark boards, exposed steel and waxed plywood for the addition. Creates a clear contemporary layer rather than a replica.
How can a compact site gain usable area? Add an upper level and roof terrace. Builds upward and makes the roof part of the home’s usable territory.
How can dark or enclosed rooms receive more light? Install extensive glazing, large sliding doors and north-facing skylights, as reported by Dwell. Improves visual and physical connections to outdoor areas; no measured daylight result is published.
How can the extension relate to the cottage? Copy the original cottage’s shape and angle while changing the cladding. Links the forms through geometry while maintaining a visible historical boundary.

Planning and heritage approval were part of the architecture

The VCAT process is not a footnote to Crisp House; it explains why the final composition is so controlled. A strict heritage overlay limits what can be demolished, how additions meet the old building and how visible new work may be from surrounding streets or properties. The architect reports that approval took a protracted path through VCAT, indicating that the design had to demonstrate more than a workable plan for the owners.

The approved upper storey and terrace show the value of a legible argument in heritage settings. The proposal keeps the cottage’s form and detailed restoration in the foreground, then uses a quieter contemporary volume behind and above it. That does not eliminate every planning trade-off, but it gives the addition a clear rationale: additional family space and outdoor amenity are delivered while the protected dwelling remains readable.

What Crisp House demonstrates for similar renovations

Make the old building the reference point

A heritage addition is easier to understand when the original building remains the datum. Crisp House keeps the cottage’s restored lower-level identity in front, then lets the new volume step back into a supporting role. For another project, that principle can be tested by asking whether a visitor can identify the historic fabric before noticing the extension.

Use similarity in proportion, difference in material

Copying the cottage’s shape and angle supplies continuity without manufacturing a fake period façade. The ironbark cladding marks the upper level as new. This balance is useful where planning authorities require visual respect but do not demand imitation.

Spend limited area on connections as well as rooms

The roof terrace, external stair, sliding doors and skylights show that extra value does not come only from enclosed square metres. Outdoor circulation, roof access and daylight can make a compact plan feel more generous. Crisp House does not publish a before-and-after area schedule, so the point is a design reading, not a measured claim about efficiency.

Separate conservation evidence from design interpretation

The architect documents the cottage’s origin, the planning difficulty, the upper addition and its materials. Dwell supplies additional restoration and glazing details. Keeping those attributions visible prevents a plausible design interpretation from being mistaken for a verified construction specification.

Why the “Crisp” redesign remains legible

Crisp House succeeds as a case study because it does not resolve heritage by freezing the cottage in place or by making the new work disappear. The beaded weatherboards, replicated windows, veranda posts and decorative timber details restore the nineteenth-century character reported for the original dwelling. Above them, ironbark boards, steel beams, waxed plywood and broad glass openings announce a different time and a different way of living.

That contrast is disciplined by the old cottage’s geometry and by the site’s limits. The upper level and roof terrace provide the additional capacity a family needs; north-facing skylights and sliding doors bring daylight and outdoor connection into a compact footprint; and the external stair turns the roof into an accessible part of the home. In the architect’s formulation, the new work acts as a clean backdrop. The architectural lesson is more precise: on a heritage-controlled site, a restrained addition can be generous when it preserves the original building’s authority, makes its own material language explicit and uses every available vertical and outdoor surface.
