CSR Himmel’s “cloud” ceiling concept is a free-hanging acoustic feature rather than a conventional grid filled with tiles. Panels are arranged in deliberate patterns below a soffit or ceiling grid, leaving the main ceiling plane visible while adding a sound-absorbing surface. The approach gives architects a way to shape a room visually and acoustically without covering the entire ceiling.
The Architecture & Design article dated 26 June 2023 describes the concept but does not identify a model number in the available article extract. The closest official product match is CSR Martini dECO Clouds, a commercial ceiling system with circular, rectangular, square and hexagonal panels. Its published performance applies to a specific direct-fix test arrangement, so the installed result must be designed around the room, suspension method and compliance requirements.

What a “cloud” ceiling is
A ceiling cloud is a panel or group of panels suspended below the structural soffit or an existing ceiling grid. Unlike a fully suspended tile ceiling, it does not create one continuous horizontal plane. The gaps around and between panels remain open, allowing services, lighting and the original soffit to stay visible.
In the featured CSR Himmel design, the panels can be arranged in different patterns to create a cloud-like composition. That patterning is the functional and visual idea: the ceiling treatment becomes an architectural feature instead of a generic field of repeated tiles. The result can define a zone over desks, a reception area, a classroom or a circulation path without lowering the entire room.

For a painter or finishing contractor, the open arrangement changes the work sequence. The soffit, exposed services and panel edges can all remain part of the finished view. Colour boundaries, masking and access therefore need to be agreed with the architect and services trades before the suspension system is fixed.
The closest identified product match: CSR Martini dECO Clouds
CSR Martini’s official dECO Clouds page describes a commercial, sound-absorbing ceiling feature that can be suspended from a soffit or ceiling grid. It lists circular panels in 600 mm, 800 mm and 1200 mm profiles, together with rectangle, square and hexagon profiles. Because the original feature article’s full text is not available in the supplied material, dECO Clouds should be treated as the closest documented match, not as proof that it was the exact model shown in the article.
Recommended Free Tools
The manufacturer supplies a dECO Clouds Suspension Kit and separate installation guidance for suspended-grid and suspended-soffit applications. Those documents are the appropriate source for fixing details, suspension spacing and kit quantities. A general product description cannot establish whether a particular slab, grid, service zone or seismic condition can support a proposed layout.

How suspended clouds affect room acoustics
A cloud works by adding absorbent area where sound energy would otherwise reflect between the floor, walls and hard ceiling. The panels intercept some of those reflections, reducing reverberant sound in the occupied zone. Their effect is different from sound isolation: absorption can make a room less echoic, while isolation concerns preventing sound from passing between enclosed rooms.
What the published NRC means
CSR Martini states an Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 0.65 for dECO Clouds in a direct-fix configuration, tested to AS/ISO 354. NRC is a single-number description of sound absorption derived from laboratory measurements. It is not a guarantee that every suspended arrangement will deliver the same value. Panel spacing, the air gap, edge exposure, ceiling height, wall finishes, occupancy and the amount of absorbent material all influence the acoustic result.
The direct-fix qualification must stay attached to the number. A cloud hung on suspension wires is not automatically equivalent to a panel fixed directly to a surface, and a project specification should use the test configuration that most closely represents the proposed installation. If the brief involves speech privacy or blocking sound between adjacent enclosed rooms, ask for a Ceiling Attenuation Class (CAC) or a complete partition-and-ceiling assembly rating; NRC alone addresses absorption, not transmission loss.

Set an acoustic target before choosing a pattern
- Identify the dominant problem: reverberation inside one room, sound transfer between rooms, or both.
- Record the room volume, hard finishes, expected occupancy and locations where speech or concentration matters.
- Ask for product data in the proposed mounting condition rather than substituting a direct-fix value for a suspended design.
- Coordinate the cloud area and height with lights, sprinklers, diffusers, detectors and access panels so the absorbent surface is not hidden or obstructed.

Planning the layout and attachment
Choose the visual field
Start with a reflected ceiling plan showing the panel outlines, suspension points, luminaires, air terminals, sprinklers, detectors and access routes. Circles can create a regular or staggered rhythm; rectangles and squares can align with furniture or room geometry; hexagons can form a more tessellated composition. The open ceiling means the soffit and services remain visible, so the pattern should be judged from normal sight lines as well as from the plan.
Confirm the supporting structure
A suspended cloud transfers load through its suspension hardware to either a soffit or an existing grid. The design team must verify the substrate, fixing type, allowable loads and any restrictions imposed by the grid manufacturer or building structure. Where the building is in a seismic region, obtain project-specific restraint and bracing requirements rather than assuming a standard hanging detail is sufficient.

Coordinate environmental conditions
Selection guidance from CSR Himmel identifies thermal conditions, condensation, weatherproofing, fire resistance and sustainability as issues that may affect a ceiling decision. An exposed soffit below a roof, an exterior canopy or a humid service zone may need a different material or protection strategy from a conditioned office. The specification should state the environmental exposure and the cleaning or replacement access required over the life of the fit-out.
Installation workflow
- Survey the room. Measure the soffit or grid, ceiling height and service zones. Photograph obstructions and record locations that must remain accessible.
- Define the acoustic brief. Decide whether the objective is absorption, speech comfort, zoning or a combination. Keep the required test configuration visible in the specification.
- Set out the pattern. Choose the profile mix and spacing on a reflected ceiling plan. Check sight lines, sprinkler coverage, light distribution and maintenance paths.
- Obtain structural approval. Confirm the substrate capacity, fixing design, suspension points, seismic provisions and coordination with other suspended equipment. Do not infer these values from a generic product page.
- Select the installation route. Use the dECO Clouds Suspension Kit where appropriate and follow the current suspended-grid or suspended-soffit guide for the selected support condition.
- Complete overhead work first. Install and test services that would become difficult to reach after the clouds are hung. Finish any soffit coating that is intended to remain visible, subject to the project’s paint specification.
- Install and align the panels. Check suspension levels, spacing, orientation and edge condition against the approved setting-out drawings. Protect panel faces from tools, dust and wet trades.
- Inspect the finished ceiling. Verify that access panels, detectors, sprinklers, lights and air terminals remain serviceable. Record deviations and retain the product documents for handover.
The manufacturer’s guides govern the actual fixing sequence. A contractor should not substitute anchors, alter suspension lengths or increase panel loading without written approval from the responsible designer or engineer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Coordination with painting and interior finishes
Cloud ceilings make finish coordination more visible than it is in a closed tile ceiling. Before painting begins, agree whether the soffit, suspension hardware and exposed services are to be painted, left in their supplied finish or treated as separate colour zones. The panel manufacturer’s care instructions and the project paint specification should control any coating applied to the panels; an unapproved coating can change appearance, weight or acoustic behaviour.

A practical sequence is to finish the background soffit and other high-level surfaces before installing delicate panels, then complete surrounding wall and joinery work with the clouds protected. Masking should account for the suspension wires and the panel perimeter rather than relying on a straight ceiling line that does not exist. Spray work needs particular control because overspray can travel through the open gaps onto panel faces, luminaires and detectors.
When a cloud sits above a feature wall or a painted wayfinding band, set out the pattern from the principal viewing direction. Small shifts in panel location can be noticeable against a strong colour boundary. Photograph the approved layout before closing out the access equipment so later maintenance can restore the intended arrangement.

| Decision factor | Free-hanging cloud | Conventional suspended tile ceiling | Direct-fixed acoustic treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual form | Discrete panels and open gaps create a designed pattern while the soffit remains visible. | A continuous grid establishes one ceiling plane and largely conceals the soffit. | Panels or boards attach directly to a supporting surface, preserving little or no service void. |
| Acoustic question | Use absorption data for the selected panel and suspension arrangement; the published dECO value is for direct fix. | Assess tile absorption and, where rooms are enclosed, the ceiling system’s CAC or assembly performance. | Use the product’s direct-fix absorption data and account for the limited or absent air gap. |
| Attachment and coordination | Requires verified suspension points, a soffit or compatible grid, and coordination with overhead services. | Requires a complete grid, perimeter details and support for the tile modules. | Requires a suitable substrate and a fixing layout that can carry the panels without damaging services. |
| Access above the ceiling | Services remain visually and physically open between panels, but each cloud can obstruct equipment directly above it. | The plenum is concealed but removable tiles can provide repeated access where the grid is planned for it. | Access is generally limited to planned openings or removal of the fixed treatment. |
| Maintenance focus | Inspect suspension, panel alignment and exposed services; clean according to the approved product guidance. | Maintain the grid, tiles and concealed services, replacing damaged modules as required. | Inspect fixed surfaces and any designated access points; repairs may require localized removal. |
The right choice depends on the brief. A cloud is strongest when the design benefits from an open soffit and a deliberately placed absorbent feature. A continuous grid is often more appropriate when the project needs a uniform ceiling plane and frequent tile-by-tile access. Direct-fixed treatment suits a substrate that can accept permanent fixing and where the loss of a service void is acceptable.
Compliance checks before approval
- Fire: Confirm the documented AS 5637.1 and AS/ISO 9705 information against the governing code, the complete ceiling build-up and the certifier’s requirements.
- Structure: Obtain calculations or written confirmation for the substrate, anchors, suspension hardware and any additional loads.
- Seismic: Determine whether restraint, bracing or movement joints are required in the project location.
- Acoustics: Match the test condition to the proposed mounting method and specify CAC or an assembly rating when inter-room isolation matters.
- Services: Preserve required clearances and access for lighting, sprinklers, mechanical diffusers, detectors and inspection points.
- Environment: Check humidity, condensation, temperature variation and weather exposure where the ceiling is not inside a stable conditioned envelope.
- Documentation: Use the latest product data sheet, warranty terms and installation guide, and include them in the handover package.
Warranty, maintenance and lifecycle planning
The dECO Clouds page states a 15-year product warranty. A warranty period is not the same as a guaranteed service life for an entire ceiling installation: suspension hardware, paint, adjacent services and building movement have their own maintenance needs. The project owner should retain the product identification, installation records and approved cleaning method so a damaged panel or suspension component can be replaced with the correct specification.
Routine inspections should look for displaced panels, bent or corroded suspension components, accidental contact from maintenance equipment and dust accumulation around nearby air terminals. Any change to lighting, sprinklers or mechanical equipment should be checked against the approved cloud layout before work starts. If a panel must be removed, support it as directed by the installation guide rather than pulling on the face or edge.
When the system is a good fit
- Use a cloud approach when the project wants a recognisable ceiling feature without hiding the entire soffit.
- Specify it when acoustic absorption is needed in selected zones and the design team can coordinate suspension with services.
- Prefer a conventional grid when the brief prioritises a continuous plane, concealed services and systematic tile access.
- Choose direct-fixed treatment when the substrate and permanent fixing strategy are suitable and a suspended service zone is unnecessary.
CSR Himmel’s concept demonstrates that an acoustic ceiling does not have to be a uniform field of tiles. With a documented product configuration, verified support and careful coordination of finishes and services, free-hanging panels can make the ceiling part of the architecture while addressing reflected sound. The published dECO Clouds data provides a starting point for specification, but the final acoustic, structural and regulatory outcome belongs to the complete project design.
