Whitlam Place in Fitzroy, Victoria, used custom curved double-glazed units to give the development a continuous, streamlined façade. The fixed units were specified as 24 mm clear low-E toughened curved glass: a 6 mm clear toughened curved outer pane, a 12 mm Swiggle spacer seal and a 6 mm clear low-E toughened curved inner pane identified as Viridian Energytech Low E. Curved sliding-door panels used 6 mm clear low-E toughened curved glass.
A trade account published on 10 December 2019 describes several months of planning and close coordination between Freadman White Architects, the builder, glass manufacturer Bent and Curved Glass and window fabricator and installer Windows on the World. It calls the completed result an outcome that “exceeded all expectations,” but reports no measured energy, acoustic, structural or code-compliance results. Read the original project account.

Whitlam Place’s curved glazing in one view
Whitlam Place is described as a Fitzroy development designed by Freadman White Architects. Its glazing was not a standard rectangular window package. The glass had to follow curved building geometry while maintaining the visual continuity expected of a high-profile architectural finish. Fabrication and installation were attributed to Windows on the World, with the account describing coordination among the architect, builder, glass manufacturer and window fabricator.
| Application | Specification reported for the project | What the specification tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed glazing | 24 mm overall; 6 mm clear toughened curved outer pane; 12 mm Swiggle spacer seal; 6 mm clear low-E toughened curved inner pane (Viridian Energytech Low E) | A sealed insulating-glass build-up with toughened curved panes and a low-E coating on the inner pane |
| Sliding doors | 6 mm clear low-E toughened curved glass (Viridian Energytech Low E) | A single 6 mm curved pane was listed for the moving panels; the account does not describe a double-glazed sliding-door build-up |
| Manufacturer named | Bent and Curved Glass | The source identifies the glass manufacturer but gives no current product range, test data or service-area details |
| Fabricator and installer named | Windows on the World | The account attributes fabrication and installation to this company; it does not provide a system model or installation test report |
These are project dimensions and material descriptions, not performance ratings. No U-value, solar-heat-gain coefficient, acoustic rating, wind-pressure result, impact classification, water test or thermal-energy measurement is reported.
Why curved double glazing changes the project process
Flat insulated glass can often be selected from established sizes and inserted into a relatively predictable frame. Curved units introduce a geometric dependency: the radius, edge conditions, frame, seals, hardware and adjacent construction must agree before fabrication. A small mismatch can appear as a visible discontinuity at the reveal or make a moving panel bind, so the design team has less tolerance for late dimensional changes.
Geometry must be settled before manufacture
The Whitlam Place account says careful planning over several months preceded installation. In practical terms, a curved-glass package needs a controlled definition of the curve, including the design radius, arc length, pane orientation, edge clearances and the relationship between the glass and its frame. Those details should be frozen in coordinated drawings before a furnace schedule or fabrication release is issued. The article does not publish Whitlam Place’s radius or drawing set, so no numerical curvature should be assumed.

One interface affects several trades
Curved glazing sits at the intersection of architecture, structure, façade or window fabrication, glass manufacture, waterproofing and interior finishes. The source specifically describes coordination among the architect, builder, glass manufacturer and window fabricator. That coordination matters because a change made by one party can alter another party’s tolerances: a revised frame line can change the glass template, while a changed glass thickness can affect beads, gaskets or door hardware.
Finish quality is judged at the curve
Curvature makes reflections and sightlines more noticeable. A seamless visual effect depends not only on the glass but also on consistent joints, clean seals, accurately aligned frames and protection during the remaining construction work. The project account’s statement that the installation exceeded expectations is a qualitative assessment of the finished outcome, not a laboratory measurement.
How the fixed 24 mm units were built
Outer pane: 6 mm clear toughened curved glass
The outer lite was specified as 6 mm clear toughened curved glass. Toughening changes the pane’s safety-breakage behaviour compared with ordinary annealed glass, while the clear designation indicates that no body tint was listed in the project description. The account does not state the glass’s heat-treatment standard, design loads or tested safety classification, so those items would need to be confirmed in project documentation.
Spacer cavity: 12 mm Swiggle spacer seal
Between the two panes was a 12 mm Swiggle spacer seal. The spacer creates the separation required for an insulating-glass unit and forms part of the sealed perimeter. The published description does not identify the cavity gas, desiccant, sealant chemistry or certified long-term moisture performance. Those details should not be inferred from the spacer name alone.

Inner pane: 6 mm clear low-E toughened curved glass
The inner lite was another 6 mm curved toughened pane, identified as Viridian Energytech Low E. Low-emissivity treatment is intended to alter radiant heat transfer, but the account gives no emissivity value, coating position beyond the pane description, whole-window U-value or solar-control result. “Low-E” therefore describes the specified coating, not a quantified energy outcome for the building.
Overall thickness: 24 mm
The listed stack is arithmetically consistent: 6 mm glass plus 12 mm spacer plus 6 mm glass equals 24 mm overall. That dimension is useful when checking frame rebates, beads, gaskets and interface clearances. It is not a statement about the finished frame depth, which is not given.
How the sliding doors differed
The sliding-door glazing was listed separately as 6 mm clear low-E toughened curved glass. This distinction is important. The fixed windows had a specified insulating-glass assembly, while the moving panels were described as a single 6 mm pane. The source does not explain why the applications used different build-ups, nor does it provide door-system thermal or acoustic data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSliding panels also impose operational requirements that fixed lights do not: the glass must remain within the track and frame tolerances while the panel moves, and seals must accommodate repeated operation. The Whitlam Place account does not report cycle testing, hardware type, panel weight, track details or maintenance requirements. Those should be obtained from the door-system supplier rather than extrapolated from the fixed-unit specification.

Who coordinated manufacture and installation
Windows on the World is credited with fabrication and installation. Bent and Curved Glass is named as the manufacturer. Freadman White Architects is identified as the design practice. The account also refers to the builder as part of the coordination group but does not name that builder.
A practical coordination sequence
- Confirm the design geometry. Record the curve, opening dimensions, datum points, frame lines and handing of every fixed and sliding unit.
- Match the glass build-up to the frame. Check the 24 mm fixed-unit thickness separately from the 6 mm sliding-door glass. Do not substitute one assembly for the other without written approval.
- Approve fabrication drawings. Include pane orientation, low-E surface identification, toughened-glass marking requirements, edge clearances, holes or notches and the location of joints.
- Coordinate delivery and storage. Curved panes require supports and protection suited to their shape. Keep packaging, lifting points and temporary bracing in the installation plan.
- Inspect before concealment. Check curvature, edge condition, seals, frame alignment, scratches, construction residue and operation of every sliding panel before trims or adjacent finishes hide the interfaces.
- Record as-built information. Retain approved drawings, glass labels, sealant data, inspection records and any test certificates so future repairs can reproduce the original specification.
What “exceeded expectations” does—and does not—mean
The 2019 account says that, after a challenging design process, fabrication and installation achieved an outcome that exceeded all expectations. That wording is the publication’s qualitative project characterization. It supports the conclusion that the completed appearance and delivery were regarded positively by the project participants, but it does not establish a measured performance threshold.
Readers should not turn that phrase into claims of energy savings, superior sound insulation, greater structural capacity or guaranteed compliance. The source reports none of those results. It also does not identify a code edition, testing laboratory, climate-zone calculation, acoustic test, wind-load test or independent post-installation review.

Section J and the limits of the historical account
The article says double glazing was recommended for high-performance projects in the context of increasing Australian Building Code Section J standards. That is a historical explanation for why an insulated-glass approach was considered relevant in 2019. It is not a current compliance determination for Whitlam Place or any other project.

Section J requirements and referenced standards can change, and compliance depends on the building’s use, climate zone, orientation, frame system, glazing ratios, shading and documented calculations. Anyone specifying a new curved-glazing project should obtain the applicable code advice and energy assessment for that project rather than copy the Whitlam Place build-up as a guaranteed solution.
What painters and finishing teams should protect
Although the case study is about glazing, curved units create interfaces that affect painting and finishing work. The following checks are practical site controls, not reported test results from Whitlam Place.
- Protect the glass before spraying or sanding. Masking should follow the manufacturer’s guidance and should not leave adhesive residue on low-E surfaces, seals or curved edges.
- Keep wet trades away from perimeter joints. Paint, plaster and render contamination can obscure sealant defects and interfere with later inspection.
- Use the approved reveal detail. A curved reveal may need a different backing, trim or movement-joint treatment from a flat opening. Follow the architect’s and window fabricator’s details.
- Inspect reflections under finished lighting. Raking light can reveal waviness, scratches, uneven sealant lines or frame misalignment that is difficult to see under diffuse site light.
- Do not drill or abrade the glass. The listed panes are toughened; field modification is not a substitute for a correctly fabricated unit and can compromise safety.
- Coordinate final cleaning. Remove labels and construction debris with products approved for coated glass. Avoid aggressive tools that can mark the low-E surface.
Questions to ask when specifying a new curved unit
Whitlam Place provides a useful description of one custom solution, but it is not a universal specification. Before approving a new project, request a written schedule covering:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- exact radius or radii, chord, arc length and allowable manufacturing tolerance;
- pane thickness, glass type, heat treatment and low-E coating location;
- spacer width, cavity gas, edge-seal system and certified insulating-glass standard;
- frame material, rebate depth, drainage path, gaskets and compatible sealants;
- design wind pressure, glass load calculations, safety requirements and impact exposure;
- thermal and solar-performance values for the complete window, not just the glass;
- acoustic rating where traffic or neighbouring uses make noise control important;
- door hardware, panel weight, track tolerances and operating-cycle requirements for sliding units;
- delivery, lifting, storage, cleaning and replacement procedures; and
- the code edition and assessment method used by the project’s building surveyor or energy consultant.
Bottom line for the Whitlam Place case study
Whitlam Place demonstrates how a custom curved façade can combine a 24 mm fixed low-E double-glazed build-up with separately specified 6 mm curved low-E sliding-door glass. Its defining lesson is coordination: months of planning connected the architect, builder, manufacturer and fabricator before installation. The published result was praised for its finish, but the 10 December 2019 account supplies no measured performance or current compliance evidence. Treat the project as a documented architectural example and use a project-specific engineering, energy and code assessment for any new work.
