Daniels Dry Cleaning & Alterations at Pakenham Central Marketplace in Melbourne, Victoria, replaced a dark orange-and-navy interior with a brighter commercial space centred on a NewTechWood Castellation feature wall. Rez Design Studios specified profile UH61 in Canadian Cedar, paired it with freshly painted white walls and existing teak front desks, and used the wall as the visual anchor for the shop’s facelift.
The project is useful because it shows how a relatively small retail renovation can combine paint, joinery and profiled cladding without making the customer area feel visually crowded. The designers’ selection was based on the product’s appearance, colour choices, claimed scratch resistance and ease of installation; those are project-team observations, not independent comparative test results.

The premises were described in the project account as dark, outdated and uninspiring. Rez Design Studios, a practice traditionally associated with residential design, worked with the owner on this small commercial refit. The brief was not simply to repaint the shop, but to make the customer-facing interior feel contemporary and welcoming while retaining practical front-of-house functions.

Why the feature wall changed the room
The former orange walls and navy accents gave the store a heavy, dated palette. Rez Design’s solution used contrast rather than more decoration: crisp white paint supplied the lightest field, while the ribbed Canadian Cedar wall introduced warmth and depth. The existing teak front desks provided a second timber reference, allowing the feature wall to relate to furniture already associated with the business instead of looking like an unrelated showroom sample.
Vertical or repeated ribs can make a wall read as a deliberate architectural surface rather than a flat painted plane. In this project, that texture helped the customer area feel designed without requiring a large collection of signs, graphics or furniture. The result also gave the shop a recognisable backdrop for the reception counter and garment drop-off interaction.

“Our choice was to implement NewTechWood Castellation cladding, profile UH61 in Canadian Cedar, and decided to complement this wall cladding system with freshly painted white crisp walls. The Canadian Cedar also matched perfectly with the timber teak front desks. The new interior is now contemporary and fresh and it welcomes new customers into the store whilst proudly showcasing the new feature wall provided by NewTechWood,”
The statement is attributed to the Rez Design team by the project article; no individual speaker is identified. It explains the designers’ intent, but it should not be read as an independent performance assessment of the cladding.

What UH61 Castellation Cladding is
The current Australian product page identifies UH61 as a five-rib castellation panel. Each rib is listed as 25 mm, with a board dimension of 196 mm by 25 mm. A board is listed at 5.4 m long, provides 186 mm of stated coverage and has a 500 mm maximum span. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements taken from the Daniels shop.
| UH61 specification | Current manufacturer listing |
|---|---|
| Profile | UH61 Castellation |
| Rib arrangement | Five ribs |
| Rib size | 25 mm ribs |
| Board dimensions | 196 mm × 25 mm |
| Board length | 5.4 m |
| Coverage | 186 mm |
| Maximum span | 500 mm |
| Colours listed for UH61 | Canadian Cedar, Ipe and Ebony |
| Compatible trims listed | End, outside-corner, inside-corner, butt-joint, J and window-flashing trims |
Because the panel covers 186 mm rather than the full nominal 196 mm board width, ordering calculations should use the stated coverage and the manufacturer’s installation method. Long 5.4 m boards may reduce horizontal joints on some walls, but access, handling and cutting conditions can determine whether that theoretical advantage is practical.

How paint and cladding were coordinated
White walls supplied visual breathing room
Painting the surrounding walls a clean white prevented the ribbed surface from competing with a second strong colour. White also reflects more available light than the former orange-and-navy combination, an important consideration in a compact marketplace tenancy where daylight and display lighting may be limited. The case study does not provide paint brand, sheen, colour code or measured light levels, so those details must be selected on site.

Canadian Cedar connected to the teak desks
The designers specifically selected Canadian Cedar because it worked with the timber teak front desks. When matching a composite wood-look finish to existing joinery, compare physical samples in the store’s actual lighting. Warm timber colours can appear more yellow, red or muted depending on LED colour temperature, reflected flooring and daylight from the mall frontage.
The feature wall remained the focal point
Limiting the stronger texture to one prominent wall creates hierarchy. Repeating the cladding on every wall could have reduced the contrast that made the intervention legible. A painter can support that hierarchy by keeping adjacent walls, ceilings and trim lines crisp, correcting visible substrate defects before the cladding is installed, and protecting the finished boards from overspray and roller splatter.
A practical sequence for a similar shop renovation
The Daniels project does not publish a construction method or a measured wall drawing. The following sequence is a planning framework; the product manufacturer’s current instructions and the requirements of the building must govern the actual installation.
- Survey the tenancy. Measure each wall, note doors, glazing, counters, sprinklers, power points and signs, and photograph existing damage. Identify which surface will carry the feature treatment and which areas will remain painted.
- Confirm the substrate. Check that the wall is sound, dry and suitable for the specified support system. Resolve dampness, loose coatings, movement or impact damage before covering it. A decorative panel should not be used to conceal an unresolved building defect.
- Set the visual datum. Mark the finished floor, counter height, ceiling line and major openings. Decide where vertical ribs begin and end so narrow slivers are not left beside a door or at a corner.
- Order samples and approve the palette. View Canadian Cedar, the proposed white paint and the teak desks together under the store’s operating lights. Record the approved sample and paint colour so later touch-ups are consistent.
- Check quantities using coverage. Calculate the cladding area from the manufacturer’s 186 mm coverage, then add cuts and waste based on the wall layout. Do not treat the project article’s 400 m² line as a verified wall area; its meaning is not explained.
- Plan trims and junctions. Select the appropriate end, outside-corner, inside-corner, butt-joint, J and window-flashing trims where the layout requires them. Draw each termination before ordering so the profile, trim and painted surfaces meet cleanly.
- Coordinate the trades. Complete dusty substrate repairs and most cutting before final painting. Protect installed cladding while painters finish adjacent walls, and keep masking from pulling at coatings or leaving adhesive residue on the ribs.
- Inspect under operating conditions. View the completed wall from the customer queue, counter and entrance. Check straightness, consistent joints, clean paint lines, secure trims and damage caused by moving equipment back into the shop.
Understanding the “400 m²” project figure
The Architecture & Design project page lists “400m²” under “Product Used” and dates the project information to 2022. It does not say whether that number refers to cladding quantity, a broader project measurement, an area across multiple surfaces or another reporting field. It therefore cannot be presented as the verified area of the feature wall, the store or the amount installed.

- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
For a new quotation, measure the actual walls and use the current board coverage, opening deductions, trim requirements and cutting plan. Ask the installer or supplier to show how the quantity was calculated. Keeping the published 400 m² figure attributed and qualified avoids a common estimating error: turning an unexplained case-study label into a construction take-off.

NewTechWood describes its Castellation and Shadowline range as suitable for indoor and outdoor residential and commercial use. The same Australian page states that the range is CodeMark certified to NCC 2022 Amendment 1 for external wall applications within the certificate’s scope.
Those statements answer different questions. The broad suitability language is the manufacturer’s description of intended applications. The CodeMark statement concerns external wall applications covered by the certificate; it does not establish compliance for every interior installation, every substrate or every fire, moisture and impact condition. For an interior retail feature wall, confirm the exact product, support method, local building requirements and any documentation requested by the certifier, landlord or centre manager.
Commercial premises can also impose access-hour, dust-control, fire-egress and protection rules that are unrelated to the decorative profile itself. Resolve those requirements before scheduling work, particularly in an operating marketplace where customers and neighbouring tenants remain nearby.

What the case study demonstrates—and what it does not
- It demonstrates a coherent design move: a dated orange-and-navy scheme was replaced with white-painted walls, a warm ribbed feature and teak furniture references.
- It documents a specific product choice: UH61 in Canadian Cedar was used for the feature wall, according to the project account.
- It records the designers’ reasons: appearance, available colours, claimed scratch resistance and ease of installation were cited by the design team.
- It does not provide comparative testing: there are no independent abrasion results, cost comparisons, acoustic measurements or lifecycle data in the cited project sources.
- It does not establish a universal best product: the selection was made for this shop’s palette, furniture and renovation brief, not as a ranking of all cladding systems.
If you are comparing alternatives, verify rib depth, colour samples, board coverage and length, trim availability, installation requirements, interior versus exterior use and the precise compliance scope. Obtain those details from each supplier rather than inferring superiority from one successful-looking installation.
Maintenance questions for a dry-cleaning shop
A customer-facing dry-cleaning store experiences repeated contact at the counter, garment movement, trolley traffic and routine cleaning. The designers cited scratch resistance as one reason for their choice, but the available project account supplies no test method or performance rating. Treat that statement as a design-team observation and ask the supplier for care instructions and documented limitations.
Keep a record of the installed profile, colour, batch or purchase documentation and approved paint code. That information makes future repairs easier if a board, trim piece or adjacent painted section is damaged. Cleaning products should be checked for compatibility before use on the composite surface, and a small hidden-area test is prudent when the manufacturer has not expressly approved a chemical.
Questions to settle before specifying UH61
- Is Canadian Cedar currently available in the required quantity and board length in your region?
- Can the supplier provide a physical sample for comparison with existing teak joinery and the proposed white paint?
- Which support spacing and fastening method apply to your substrate and interior condition?
- Which end, corner, butt-joint, J and window-flashing trims are needed for the drawing?
- Does the project require documentation beyond the manufacturer’s external-wall CodeMark scope?
- How will long 5.4 m boards be delivered, stored and moved through the tenancy?
- What cleaning products, repair methods and replacement-part process are recommended?
Resolve these points with NewTechWood or a regional building-material supplier before placing an order. The manufacturer’s product page provides information and samples, but local stock, delivery and any commercial terms must be confirmed directly.
