David Chipperfield Architects’ completed project was the extensive refurbishment of Berlin’s Neue Nationalgalerie, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s steel-and-glass museum. The practice was commissioned in 2012; construction work ran from 2015 to 2021, and the museum reopened on 22 August 2021.

This was not a cosmetic makeover. The team repaired concrete and the building envelope, corrected causes of glass breakage, upgraded fire protection and all major technical services, and improved climate control, lighting, security, storage, accessibility and visitor facilities while preserving the landmark’s appearance and historic fabric.

Which Berlin building was renovated?

The project concerns the Neue Nationalgalerie at Berlin’s Kulturforum, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Built between 1965 and 1968 and opened in 1968, it is Mies’s only building realized in Germany after the Second World War. Its composition is deliberately spare: a monumental steel roof carried by slender columns, a transparent glass enclosure and a broad stone podium.

That clarity made intervention unusually demanding. Every new service, access route or safety measure had to work inside a building whose character depends on visual order, exposed structure and carefully proportioned details. The museum authority therefore treated the work as a comprehensive renewal of a protected monument rather than a redesign.

Timeline: commission, construction and reopening

Stage Date What it means
Original construction 1965–1968 Mies van der Rohe’s museum was built and opened.
Architect appointed 2012 The Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz commissioned David Chipperfield Architects.
Construction refurbishment 2015–2021 The museum was closed while the building and its systems were renewed.
Reopening 22 August 2021 The Neue Nationalgalerie returned to public use.

The architect’s project record describes a 2012–2021 project span because planning and delivery began with the commission. The museum’s own account dates the extensive construction phase from 2015 through 2021. Keeping those dates separate explains why both timelines appear in official descriptions.

Why the museum needed such extensive work

After almost five decades of use, the building had accumulated safety problems, construction defects and ordinary wear. The need reached from the façade to the building services, as the foundation stated when it announced the commission. Repairs had to address the fabric that visitors see as well as the hidden infrastructure that allows a museum to operate safely.

  • Structure: concrete elements required repair after decades of exposure and use.
  • Envelope: the steel-and-glass enclosure was refurbished, including measures addressing the causes of repeated glass breakage.
  • Fire safety: prevention and protection systems were brought up to contemporary requirements.
  • Building services: mechanical, electrical and control systems were renewed rather than simply patched.
  • Museum operation: climate control, lighting, security, art handling and storage needed modern capacity.

Because these systems are interdependent, replacing one in isolation would have risked damaging the building or producing incompatible layers of equipment. The project exposed the structure, coordinated the services and then reinstated the architectural components that define the public rooms.

How Chipperfield’s team preserved Mies’s design

The conservation strategy was to retain the visual appearance and as much original material as possible while making the building perform as a contemporary museum. David Chipperfield Architects characterizes the result as a “respectful repair” rather than a new interpretation. New work was intended to remain subordinate to the existing architecture and, where visible, discreetly legible instead of pretending to be original.

Careful dismantling and reinstatement

About 35,000 original building components were dismantled so that the underlying structure and services could be reached. Stone cladding, interior fittings and other elements were catalogued, restored or modified where necessary, and returned to their precise original positions. This approach differs from replacing an old interior with visually similar new products: the project kept the actual components whenever their condition and function allowed.

Repair instead of stylistic reinterpretation

The team did not add a competing architectural language to Mies’s pavilion. Alterations were judged by whether they solved a safety, conservation or operational problem while allowing the steel grid, glass walls, stone surfaces and open galleries to remain dominant. That hierarchy is central to understanding why the refurbishment can be extensive without reading as a new building.

What changed technically

The completed work combines conservation repairs with upgrades that visitors may notice only indirectly. The following interventions were part of the museum’s refurbishment programme.

Area Work carried out Why it matters in a museum
Concrete and structure Structural-concrete repairs and associated fabric work. Restores the load-bearing and weathered parts of the monument before finishes and equipment are reinstated.
Steel-and-glass envelope Refurbishment of the façade and correction of conditions that contributed to glass breakage. Protects visitors and collections while retaining the transparent appearance of the pavilion.
Fire protection Fire-prevention improvements and updated protective systems. Provides contemporary safety without abandoning the open gallery plan.
Climate and heating Renewed climate-control systems and underfloor heating. Supports stable conditions for artworks and improves comfort without filling the galleries with visible equipment.
Lighting LED lighting and renewed gallery infrastructure. Improves energy and maintenance performance while allowing exhibitions to be lit flexibly.
Security and operations Updated security, technical spaces, art storage and art-handling provisions. Gives staff safer routes and more reliable back-of-house capacity.

New technical spaces and art storage were created beneath the podium. Putting infrastructure below the principal public level preserves the legibility of the upper pavilion and gives the museum room for equipment, logistics and collection care that the original building could not provide.

Visitor and accessibility improvements

The refurbishment also addressed how people enter, move through and use the museum. Universal-access provisions were improved, alongside the cloakroom, café and shop. These changes are functional rather than ornamental: a landmark museum must accommodate visitors with different mobility needs, manage contemporary crowd patterns and provide basic services without compromising the galleries.

Accessibility work was coordinated with the conservation approach. Instead of treating ramps, lifts or upgraded routes as separate additions, the project integrated them with the building’s existing levels and circulation. The result allows the historic sequence of podium, hall and galleries to remain readable while making the institution more usable.

Why the building had to close

The museum closed during construction because the work reached almost every layer of the building. Repairing concrete, dismantling thousands of components, replacing services, improving fire protection and installing new climate and security systems cannot be done safely around normal public circulation. Closure also protected artworks and allowed contractors to work through the galleries, podium and technical areas without the compromises imposed by daily opening hours.

The reopening on 22 August 2021 marked the return of the museum as an operating institution, not merely the completion of a façade repair. Exhibitions could once again use galleries whose infrastructure, environmental control and handling routes had been renewed together.

Scale of the completed project

David Chipperfield Architects lists a gross floor area of 13,900 square metres, a figure also given by the Royal Institute of British Architects as the building’s gross internal area. The 35,000-component figure refers to original elements dismantled and reinstated during the work; it is not a count of newly manufactured parts or a measure of construction output.

No public project cost is established in the cited award material; RIBA identifies the cost as confidential. A precise budget should therefore not be inferred from the area, the duration or the number of components.

How to judge the conservation approach

The Neue Nationalgalerie offers a useful case for evaluating large-scale work on modern monuments. Five questions clarify what the project achieved.

How much original material survived?

The documented dismantling and reinstatement of roughly 35,000 components indicates a high-retention strategy. Elements were restored or adapted where needed rather than discarded automatically, and their original locations were recorded and respected.

Are new interventions subordinate?

The architect’s stated aim was for additions to remain subordinate and discreetly legible. In practical terms, the steel-and-glass pavilion remains the dominant visual statement; technical equipment, access work and service spaces support it rather than compete with it.

Did performance improve beyond appearance?

Yes. Structural repair, façade safety, fire prevention, climate control, heating, lighting, security, storage and art handling all went beyond surface restoration. The project treated the museum as working infrastructure as well as an architectural icon.

Can the building serve a broader public?

Universal access and upgraded visitor facilities were included alongside technical work. The museum’s café, shop and cloakroom were improved, making the institution more practical for visitors without changing the essential character of the galleries.

Was continued operation possible during the work?

No. The museum closed for construction because the intervention was comprehensive. That disruption was the cost of completing repairs and upgrades coherently rather than exposing visitors and collections to a prolonged sequence of partial works.

Recognition after reopening

The refurbishment received several professional distinctions. The architect lists the Docomomo Rehabilitation Award in 2021 and the European Award for Architectural Heritage Intervention in 2023. RIBA named the project an International Award for Excellence winner in 2024. These awards recognize the balance between technical renewal and conservation of a significant modern building; they do not turn the project measurements into independent performance studies.

What the project means for modernist museums

Modernist buildings often appear simple because their structure and services are tightly integrated. A glass wall, exposed roof or open floor can conceal demanding requirements for fire safety, environmental stability, security and accessible circulation. The Neue Nationalgalerie shows that preserving modern architecture may require extensive intervention behind the scenes.

Its lesson is not that every historic building should be frozen or that every upgrade should be hidden. Rather, the project demonstrates a disciplined sequence: understand the original construction, remove components carefully, repair what can be retained, place new infrastructure where it does the least visual harm, and reinstall the historic fabric accurately. The museum now meets contemporary operational needs while remaining recognizably Mies’s pavilion.
