David Samuel Ko’s Studio City living room feels distinctive because it is edited, not empty: a neutral foundation and generous light give a small group of highly personal objects room to register. In an Architectural Digest Room Envy interview published May 26, 2023, Ko described a 1,500-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment whose identity comes from deliberate placement, vintage finds, art, books, and a fashion-influenced sense of silhouette.
The apartment Ko was shaping
The Architectural Digest feature places Ko in a 1,500-square-foot apartment in Studio City, Los Angeles. It has two bedrooms and two bathrooms; he said he moved there the previous September, which means September 2022 in the context of the May 2023 interview. The article presents the home as it was reported at that time, not as a current tour or an independently measured update.

His search began with the architecture of daily life rather than with a particular sofa. Ko wanted rooms that could be separated from one another, natural light, and enough open space to avoid feeling enclosed. He also valued an in-unit washer and dryer, a pool, and a parking spot—useful amenities for his Los Angeles routine, but personal priorities rather than universal requirements for renters.
Why light and room separation matter to him
Ko explained that his previous Brentwood apartment felt too dark because nearby buildings blocked the light and that it did not offer as much space as he wanted. “I knew I didn’t want a studio because as a designer, I need rooms to be separated from one another,” he told Architectural Digest. He also said, “For me, I need light and open space affects me a lot; I get seasonal depression when it’s gloomy … I just don’t want to feel like I’m in a cave.”

That statement explains an important part of the room’s appearance. The openness is not merely a styling preference; it is part of how Ko says the home supports him. Furniture and objects therefore have to provide character without blocking the light or turning circulation into a maze.
The visual premise: quiet base, specific objects
Ko describes his decorating approach as minimal, with a neutral base and selected personal pieces. Neutrality here is a background strategy, not a demand that everything be beige or anonymous. A restrained field lets the objects he has chosen—denim upholstery, colored lighting, old wood, artwork, and books—carry the visual information.

A room can be sparse and still feel autobiographical when each visible item has a reason to be there. Ko’s low vintage wooden bench is both furniture and a display surface. The books on it identify his interests, while the bench’s age and material keep the arrangement from looking like a showroom vignette. A customized painting and a 1970s A Star Is Born poster add biography that a coordinated set of accessories could not provide.
Ko summed up this standard of editing in the interview: “Now with my own space, I want everything intentionally placed.” The useful lesson is not to count objects or chase a prescribed style. It is to ask whether each item contributes memory, use, texture, or a focal point—and whether its position gives it enough breathing room.

The objects that give the room its identity
The feature names several pieces that function as anchors. They are identifiable references, not a shopping list, and the article does not establish their current prices, stock, or availability.
| Object reported in the room | Role in the composition | Transferable design idea |
|---|---|---|
| Denim Soriana lounge chair | A tactile, sculptural seat with a fashion-like material presence | Let one substantial chair supply color, softness, and a recognizable silhouette. |
| Lampada Cappello Da Terra floor lamp by Oscar Piccolo | A tall, expressive lighting element that reads almost like a piece of sculpture | Use one distinctive light source to establish mood instead of filling the room with small décor. |
| Low vintage wooden bench | A long, low platform for coffee-table and design books | Combine practical seating or surface area with a controlled display zone. |
| HAY rice-paper shade in the dining area | A light, diffuse counterpoint to harder furniture and artwork | Repeat a simple, inexpensive-looking material to soften a more collected scheme. |
| Custom painting by Los Angeles artist Tom O’Connor | A personal artwork with a direct connection to Ko’s life and city | Commission or choose work for meaning, not only for color matching. |
| 1970s A Star Is Born movie poster | A period reference that introduces cultural memory and retro energy | Allow one era-specific image to make a neutral room feel inhabited. |
| Painting Four Hands, the Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol book | A readable record of Ko’s collecting interests displayed on the bench | Display a few books whose subjects you genuinely return to, rather than buying décor books by the yard. |
Ko also said he had commissioned two pieces of art recently at the time of the interview. That detail reinforces the room’s ongoing quality: it was not presented as a finished package delivered in one purchase.
How the collecting strategy works
Ko prefers to acquire pieces over time and wait for the right item. His most expansive explanation is worth treating as a method: “I lean into whatever the space is telling me. I take more of a collector’s approach—I’m constantly acquiring pieces as a designer and I’ve come to the realization [that] I’d rather come and buy the pieces to fit what I need and I’d rather wait until I find the right item that I can have for years down the road.”
For a reader adapting that approach, the sequence matters more than the budget.

- Establish the room’s non-negotiables. Measure circulation, note where daylight enters, and decide what must remain easy to reach. Ko’s own priorities were separation, light, and openness.
- Choose the functional anchors first. A sofa, chair, dining table, or primary lamp should solve a real use problem before you add display pieces.
- Leave deliberate gaps. An empty section of wall or floor gives a collected object visual authority and preserves the open feeling Ko values.
- Buy for a future room, not a temporary trend. Ko says he wants pieces that can follow him to future homes. Favor construction, comfort, and personal attachment over a short-lived color story.
- Add biography in layers. Introduce art, books, and one or two inherited, vintage, or travel-related objects as they become available. Do not fill every surface just to make the room look complete.
- Reassess placement after living with it. Intentionality is not permanent rigidity. Move an object if it blocks a path, competes with a stronger piece, or makes the room harder to use.
Where fashion enters the interior
“High fashion–inspired” describes an influence in Ko’s own practice, not a formal design category with a fixed formula. He connected his interiors and clothing interests this way: “Overall, I think mixing the interior design and fashion in me brings this whole ‘cool LA boy’ retro style, and the items will definitely have places in my future homes down the road.”
In practical terms, fashion influence can show up through proportion, texture, and editing. The Soriana chair has a memorable, almost garment-like surface; the floor lamp has a strong outline; the poster and art introduce references the way a carefully chosen accessory can change an outfit. The room does not need designer labels to achieve that effect. It needs a clear point of view and enough restraint that the strongest shapes are visible.

Four decisions that clarify the look
| Decision | Quieter direction | More expressive direction | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base and accent | Neutral upholstery, walls, and broad surfaces | One colored chair, lamp, or artwork | Which single accent deserves attention first? |
| Collected versus newly bought | Wait for a vintage or meaningful piece | Purchase a current item to solve an immediate need | Will this still matter if the room changes? |
| Display versus storage | Keep only a small group of books and objects visible | Use closed storage for the rest | Does the display communicate something, or is it overflow? |
| Separation and light | Define zones with furniture and preserve clear sightlines | Use a more open plan, accepting less visual division | Does the layout support how you feel and move through the home? |
Making a neutral living room personal without clutter
Start with a light-friendly layout
Before choosing accessories, map the daylight and walking routes. Keep tall pieces from forming a wall in front of windows, and avoid pushing every item against the perimeter if that creates awkward central space. If you rent, use rugs, lamps, and furniture orientation to define a living zone rather than adding permanent partitions. Ko’s preference for distinct rooms can be interpreted as clear activity zones, even in an open-plan home.
Give one seat and one light the lead
A sculptural lounge chair or an unusual floor lamp can do the work of several minor accents. Place the chair where it is useful—near a reading surface or conversation group—then let its outline remain visible. Position the main lamp so it illuminates an activity rather than merely occupying an empty corner. The point is hierarchy: one or two recognizable forms, supported by quieter pieces.

Use a low surface as a curated horizon
Ko’s bench demonstrates why low furniture is effective in a room that aims to feel open. It keeps sightlines clear while offering a home for books. Select a small stack with genuine relevance, vary the heights, and leave part of the bench empty. If you own more books than you want to display, rotate them seasonally or store the remainder closed; a collection reads as intentional only when it is edited.
Choose art for attachment, then check the scale
The Tom O’Connor painting and the vintage film poster are meaningful because they point to people, places, and interests, not because they complete a color palette. Hang personal work at a comfortable viewing height, test the sightline from the main seat, and give each major piece enough wall around it. Several small works can form a group, but they should share an edge, baseline, or visual rhythm so the wall does not become visual static.

Let materials carry the variation
When the palette is restrained, contrast can come from touch: denim against smooth flooring, old wood against painted walls, translucent rice paper against a darker object, or a glossy frame beside a matte textile. This creates richness without adding many colors. Repeat a material once or twice, but do not make every surface match; a collected room depends on controlled difference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the profile does—and does not—prove
The Architectural Digest article is a single interview and room profile. It does not provide measured lighting levels, a product comparison, item-by-item prices, durability testing, or evidence that the named objects are currently sold in the same finishes. The apartment’s condition and Ko’s plans should therefore be understood as reported in May 2023.

It also does not establish that a 1,500-square-foot apartment, two bedrooms, or two bathrooms are necessary for this look. The portable principle is the order of decisions: protect light and circulation, establish a calm base, select a few expressive anchors, and let personal acquisitions accumulate slowly. A smaller room can use the same logic with fewer and smaller pieces; a larger one may need stronger zoning to keep the edit from dissolving into empty space.
Ko’s definition of a home
Ko’s clearest verdict is about authorship: “I think it defines me as a person, you know? Everything in this room has been collected with intentionality.” That sentence explains why the living room reads as more than a collection of fashionable references. The denim chair, floor lamp, bench, books, commissioned art, and old poster are individual decisions, but together they show a person choosing what deserves to remain visible.
For anyone trying to create a similarly personal living room, the actionable takeaway is patience. Do not buy a dozen accessories to imitate a photograph. Make the room work in daylight, keep the paths open, choose one memorable form, display only what you can explain, and wait for the objects that make the space feel like yours.
