How Designers Build a Stylish, Pet-Friendly Home

A genuinely pet-friendly home starts with behavior and safety, then uses flooring, upholstery, paint, storage and pet zones to solve the wear and mess your animals actually create.

A pet-friendly home starts with your animal’s behavior and safety, then translates those needs into finishes, furniture placement, storage and room access. The goal is not to make every surface indestructible. It is to choose cleanable materials where messes happen, add traction where paws need it, provide legitimate outlets for scratching or chewing, and give the pet a comfortable place to rest without turning the house into a kennel.

Walk through each room at your pet’s eye level before choosing paint, flooring or furniture. Look for cords to secure, plants to check, breakables to move, slippery routes to soften and areas where a bed, feeding station, wash zone or scratching post can fit naturally. That approach preserves the character of the home while solving the problems your particular animal actually creates.

What “pet-friendly” should mean in a real home

Pet-friendly design is a set of decisions, not a single product category. A home for an elderly dog has different requirements from a home for a young cat that climbs, scratches and hides. A long-haired animal changes your cleaning routine; a puppy changes your access plan; a large dog may need more traction than a small, agile one.

The American Animal Hospital Association advises viewing rooms from a pet’s perspective, securing hazards and managing access while an animal learns household rules. That makes safety part of the design brief rather than an afterthought.

Interest in this approach is measurable, but the figures must stay tied to their surveys. Houzz’s 2024 U.S. Pets & the Home Study surveyed 1,165 pet owners on Houzz: 48% said pets were a priority in renovation decisions, 34% considered pet-friendly products or materials, and 22% considered pet-specific design or function such as a bed or feeding station. Houzz’s separate 2024 UK study, based on more than 1,600 respondents, found 53% prioritizing pets, 29% considering pet-friendly products or materials and 28% considering pet-specific design or function. Those are different U.S. and UK samples, not a single worldwide rate.

As Houzz staff economist Marine Sargsyan put it in the U.S. announcement, “Whether selecting pet-friendly materials or incorporating built-in feeding stations and cozy nooks, homeowners are designing spaces that prioritize the needs of all family members, including pets.”

Begin with a behavior and safety audit

Before ordering flooring or repainting, observe how your animal uses the house for several days. Note where claws catch, where fur collects, which route becomes slippery, where accidents occur and which furniture your pet already prefers. Include seasonal patterns such as muddy entries or wet coats.

Map movement and access

  • Mark the main routes between sleeping, eating, drinking and outdoor areas.
  • Identify thresholds or smooth stretches where an older or large-breed pet loses traction.
  • Decide which rooms are always open, occasionally open or off-limits. Temporary gates can support that plan while training is underway.
  • Locate cords, chargers, medications, breakable objects and small decor that a curious animal can reach.
  • Check every plant against reliable pet-safety guidance before bringing it into a reachable room.

Design for the individual animal

A cat that scratches the sofa needs a sturdy, appealing scratching surface placed near the behavior, not merely a decorative object hidden in another room. AAHA recommends scratchers with varied textures, shapes and sizes, positioned near high-traffic areas. A dog that chews may need approved chew outlets and closer supervision during the learning period. A nervous animal may benefit from a quiet retreat rather than a busy, central bed.

Choose flooring by the problem it solves

No source establishes a universally best floor, and no floor is guaranteed to be scratch-proof or slip-proof. Compare the surface with the room’s use, your cleaning habits and the animal’s mobility.

Option or addition Useful qualities Questions to settle before choosing
Tile Often selected for straightforward cleanup and a hard-wearing surface; can be used throughout a home when comfort and traction are addressed. Will the finish feel cold or uncomfortable for resting? Do pets need runners for grip? How will grout be cleaned?
Luxury vinyl plank Discussed by designers as a practical option in some pet households and available in styles that coordinate with painted walls. What does the manufacturer specify for cleaning and moisture? How will the surface perform on your pet’s main running route?
Rugs or runners AAHA recommends them to improve traction on slippery floors, especially for older or large-breed pets. Can the rug lie flat, stay put and be cleaned after an accident? Is the weave likely to snag claws?
Existing flooring retained Avoids unnecessary replacement when the current floor is safe and serviceable. Can you improve the route with runners, gates or furniture placement instead of remodeling?

Designer Sarah Sham described using only tiled flooring in her own home “to allow for good grip.” That is her personal design choice, not a recommendation that tile works for every household. If your pet struggles on a smooth floor, test a runner in the actual route before committing to a whole-room change. Secure its edges and inspect it regularly for curled corners.

Make upholstery and soft furnishings easier to live with

AAHA advises durable, snag-resistant fabrics or high-quality covers. The right upholstery still depends on your animal’s claws, coat, stain pattern and tendency to chew. A tightly woven textile may behave differently from a loose boucle under the same cat, while a washable cover may be more useful than a theoretically tougher fabric that cannot be cleaned at home.

Evaluate a fabric sample against four tests

  1. Claws: Run a fingernail lightly across the weave and ask whether a claw could catch. This is an observation, not a guarantee of performance.
  2. Hair: Hold the sample vertically and see whether the coat brushes off or embeds in the texture. Choose a color that makes routine hair less visually overwhelming if frequent vacuuming is unrealistic.
  3. Stains: Read the care label and confirm which cleaning methods are allowed before buying a sofa or chair.
  4. Comfort and use: Make sure the fabric remains comfortable for people and that a cover can be removed without making the furniture awkward to use.

Training and placement matter as much as the textile. Put an approved scratching surface or chew outlet near the furniture your pet targets, reward the preferred behavior and limit unsupervised access during the learning phase. Covers can protect a high-use seat, but they supplement—not replace—training and supervision.

Integrate pet zones instead of adding clutter

A useful pet zone gives an animal a predictable place to eat, sleep, hide, scratch or get cleaned. It does not need to be a dedicated room. A low-use corner, the end of a mudroom, a niche beside existing cabinetry or a space under a counter can work when ventilation, access and cleaning are practical.

Feeding and water

Keep bowls on a surface that tolerates splashes and can be wiped without damaging adjacent cabinetry or painted walls. Leave enough clearance for the animal to turn comfortably, and avoid placing food where a swinging door or busy walkway will cause repeated interruptions. A built-in feeding station can look intentional, but a freestanding setup is easier to move if your pet’s habits change.

Rest and retreat

Choose a bed or hideaway appropriate to the animal’s size and mobility. Place it where the pet can withdraw without being trapped, and avoid forcing a shy animal into the loudest circulation path. For dogs learning crate use, AAHA describes gradual crate training with positive reinforcement; the crate should be introduced as a safe place, not used as punishment.

Wash and entry area

If your layout permits, place towels, brushes and cleaning supplies near the entrance used after walks. A wash area can be integrated into a mudroom or utility space, but it should have enough room for safe handling and a floor that can be cleaned according to its care instructions. Keep supplies secured from pets and children.

Cat climbing and scratching

Reported projects include cat rooms with climbing, scratching, lounging, hiding and sleeping areas. You do not need a dedicated cat room to borrow the idea: combine a stable vertical perch, a hiding spot and a sturdy scratcher in a room your cat already uses. Position scratchers near high-traffic areas and inspect their stability as they wear.

Use paint and wall finishes strategically

Paint is where a pet-friendly plan can support the character of the home without pretending that walls are immune to damage. Start by identifying the locations most likely to show nose marks, muddy splashes, food residue or repeated contact: the entry, feeding wall, hallway corners and the area beside a bed or crate.

Select for maintenance, not a blanket “pet-proof” claim

Choose a wall finish that the manufacturer identifies as washable or cleanable for the intended room, and keep the care instructions with your project records. Test the proposed color and finish on a sample board in the actual light. A pale wall may make fur and dirt more visible; a deep color may reveal dried water marks or touch-up differences. Neither choice is universally superior.

Protect vulnerable edges

  • Use a narrow, cleanable zone behind feeding bowls rather than relying on a full-room repaint after every spill.
  • Keep beds and crates slightly away from corners so fur and moisture do not remain trapped against the wall.
  • Plan touch-up access before installing built-ins. A removable panel or reachable edge is easier to maintain than a sealed cavity.
  • Coordinate trim, doors and cabinetry so the areas that receive the most contact can be cleaned without scrubbing delicate decorative details.

Good preparation still matters: repair existing dents, allow new coatings to cure as directed and keep pets away from wet or uncured surfaces. Paint can reduce visual wear and simplify routine cleaning, but it cannot correct a slippery floor, an unsafe cord or an animal that has no suitable outlet for scratching.

Build safety into the layout

AAHA’s pet-proofing guidance translates directly into design details:

  • Hide or protect electrical cords, especially along sleeping and climbing routes.
  • Move breakable decor above the pet’s reach or secure it so a tail, paw or climbing cat cannot knock it down.
  • Check the safety of every reachable plant before installation.
  • Use temporary gates to control rooms while a new pet learns boundaries.
  • Add runners where slippery flooring creates a mobility risk, and keep them flat and stable.
  • Provide cats with sturdy scratchers in multiple textures and forms rather than trying to prohibit scratching altogether.

Safety products should match the hazard and the animal. A gate must fit the opening and withstand the pet’s behavior; a cord cover must not become a chew target. These tools support supervision and training rather than replacing them.

Plan each room without sacrificing style

Entry and hallway

Prioritize a cleanable landing zone, secure storage for leashes and towels, and traction along the route to the outside. Paint the wall most exposed to wet coats in a finish you can maintain, and keep decorative objects out of tail height.

Living room

Give the pet a legitimate resting place so the sofa is not the only comfortable option. Keep a scratching post or chew outlet close to the furniture your animal targets. Choose upholstery after checking claws, hair, stains and cleaning instructions, then coordinate the color with the wall rather than hiding the furniture under permanent covers.

Kitchen and dining area

Separate feeding from the busiest foot traffic where possible. Protect the wall and floor around bowls, secure food storage and use a gate during cooking if your pet crowds hot surfaces or dropped food.

Bedroom

Make access intentional. If the pet sleeps in the room, provide a bed that does not block exits and select textiles that can be cleaned. If the room is off-limits, establish that boundary consistently with a gate or closed door while training.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bathroom, utility room and laundry

These rooms can house wash supplies, litter equipment or towels, but secure detergents and small objects. Confirm that the floor remains safe when wet and that the pet cannot become trapped behind an appliance or door.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Record behavior: Photograph scratched corners, fur-heavy zones, accident spots and slippery routes over several days.
  2. Set boundaries: Decide which rooms require gates, closed doors or supervised access during training.
  3. Fix immediate hazards: Secure cords, move breakables, check plants and stabilize rugs before cosmetic work.
  4. Test small areas: Place a runner, fabric sample, bed or scratcher in the intended location and observe whether the pet actually uses it.
  5. Choose surfaces: Compare flooring and upholstery for cleanability, snag resistance, traction, comfort, room suitability and maintenance.
  6. Prepare for painting: Protect floors, remove or secure pet items, follow the coating’s preparation and curing directions, and keep animals out until the area is safe.
  7. Install pet zones: Add feeding, resting, scratching and wash functions only where they improve daily routines and remain easy to clean.
  8. Reassess: After a few weeks, move or replace items that are ignored, unstable or creating a new hazard.

Budget and trade-offs to expect

The most economical solution is often targeted rather than total: a runner on a dangerous route, a gate at one doorway, a cover on one chair, or a washable wall treatment in the entry. Replacing every floor or commissioning custom cabinetry may be appropriate for a major renovation, but the available reporting does not establish typical project costs, lifecycle savings or a universal return on investment. Costs described in individual 2025 project coverage are examples of those specific homes, not standard prices.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by appearance alone

Problem: A dramatic floor or loosely woven fabric looks right but catches claws or shows every spill. Correction: Test samples against the animal’s actual behavior and read cleaning instructions before ordering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming one material suits every pet

Problem: A solution that works for a calm cat is applied to a large, older dog with poor traction. Correction: Recheck grip, comfort, access and room use for each animal.

Hiding the pet’s approved outlet

Problem: A scratcher or bed is placed where the pet never goes, while the sofa remains convenient. Correction: Put the approved item near the high-value behavior and reward its use.

Relying on a product instead of a plan

Problem: A gate, cover or cord protector is treated as permanent supervision. Correction: Match the product to the hazard, inspect it and continue training and monitoring.

Creating a beautiful but inaccessible pet station

Problem: Bowls, litter supplies or grooming tools are hidden so deeply that cleaning is skipped. Correction: Preserve enough clearance to reach, wipe and refill every component.
