DLR Group’s work at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History is a completed, multiphase transformation rather than a standalone replacement building. The $150 million project, which broke ground in June 2021 and reached its grand opening in December 2024, links decades of additions into a more coherent campus, adds a new Visitor Hall and more than two acres of outdoor visitor areas, and reorganizes interpretation around connected natural processes. The architecture uses flowing forms, water references and a glacially inspired façade to make Northeast Ohio’s geology legible before visitors even enter.

A campus assembled over decades became one visitor experience

The museum’s physical problem was cumulative: buildings and additions had arrived at different times, leaving a collection of structures that did not read as a single public institution. DLR Group’s assignment was therefore to overhaul the existing campus while adding substantial new space. The firm describes the result as a “multiphase renovation and iconic addition,” while completion-era coverage describes a transformed project of more than 375,000 square feet. Those descriptions refer to related but not necessarily identical scopes, so the figures should not be treated as a simple before-and-after calculation.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History and DLR Group announced the $150 million expansion when construction began on June 24, 2021; the firm’s announcement was published June 30, 2021 (DLR Group groundbreaking announcement). The museum announced its grand opening for December 13, 2024, and Architectural Record reports that construction wrapped that month (museum opening announcement; Architectural Record project coverage).

Aspect What the sources establish about the earlier campus What the completed transformation adds or changes Qualification
Building area The museum and DLR Group describe an existing 217,250-square-foot facility in the 2024 certification announcement. That announcement and Architectural Record describe more than 375,000 square feet after the transformation; DLR Group’s project page lists 182,000 square feet. The 182,000-square-foot figure appears to represent a different project scope or reporting stage. It is not safe to subtract it from 375,000 square feet (DLR Group project page; DLR Group LEED announcement; Architectural Record).
Public arrival The prior arrangement consisted of accumulated additions rather than the new, clearly defined arrival described for the project. A new Visitor Hall establishes a front door for the transformed museum. The museum introduced the hall as a project milestone in October 2023 (museum Visitor Hall announcement).
Outdoor experience No comparable earlier acreage is stated in the cited project announcements. More than two acres of outdoor visitor areas are included. Area reported by DLR Group for the completed transformation (DLR Group LEED announcement).
Exhibit logic Traditional museum organization separated subjects by scientific discipline and time period. Galleries are organized around connected planetary and biological processes and their relevance to contemporary life. This is the museum’s stated interpretive approach, not a measurement of visitor response (Visitor Hall announcement; opening announcement).
Sustainability rating No earlier certification is identified in these sources. LEED v4 BD+C: New Construction Platinum certification. The museum and DLR Group describe it as the first U.S. museum to earn that certification; the claim is theirs and is deliberately limited to the United States (DLR Group announcement; museum announcement).

What physically changed for visitors

A recognizable arrival point

The new Visitor Hall gives the museum a legible starting point. Instead of asking visitors to decode a campus assembled through successive additions, the project presents an identifiable threshold from which the rest of the institution can be understood. The museum unveiled the hall in October 2023, naming Panzica Construction as its realization partner and Gallagher & Associates as the exhibit-design partner working with museum teams (museum Visitor Hall announcement).

DLR Group says the Visitor Hall is open to the public at no cost (DLR Group design commentary). That detail matters because the hall functions as more than a ticket checkpoint: it is the project’s civic-facing introduction and a way to encounter the institution even without planning a full gallery visit. Current admission rules, hours and exhibit availability can change, so the free-access statement should not be generalized to every museum space.

Indoor galleries connected to outdoor areas

More than two acres of outdoor visitor areas extend the project beyond enclosed galleries. The combination allows circulation to move between built exhibits and landscape rather than treating nature as something represented only behind glass. The sources establish the acreage and the existence of the outdoor areas, but do not provide a visitor-count study or quantified measure of how long people spend there; those performance claims should not be inferred.

Older additions read as a whole

DLR Group’s design work ties earlier building pieces into a more continuous composition. This is a renovation strategy as much as an expansion strategy: new construction supplies missing connections and a public face, while the existing museum remains part of the institutional story. The firm’s project description emphasizes the link between the older additions and the new architectural language (DLR Group project page).

Why the architecture looks like Northeast Ohio

Glaciers translated into form

The exterior is not an abstract shape chosen independently of place. DLR Group describes flowing forms and a glass-fiber-reinforced-concrete façade element that evoke glacial landforms. In Northeast Ohio, the region’s visible terrain was shaped by ice, deposited material and moving water; the building turns those processes into curves, folds and a surface that appears shaped rather than stacked.

The approach lets the façade perform an interpretive role before a visitor reaches an exhibit label. Its geometry suggests movement and erosion, while the material has the durability and moldability needed for a large civic envelope. DLR Group’s account connects the forms to glaciers, regional geology and water, and explains that the design was intended to align the exterior with the natural-history mission (groundbreaking announcement; design commentary).

Water as a connective idea

Water is treated as a regional system rather than a decorative motif. The project’s flowing lines and landscape connections support a reading of Cleveland’s environment as linked processes: ice alters land, land directs water, and water shapes habitats. That framing helps explain why the design does not imitate a single rock, animal or historical period. It is an architectural shorthand for change over time.

Architecture in service of the collection

Sonia Winner, the museum’s president and chief executive officer, described the intent this way: “As a leading cultural institution and a champion of a better future for both humans and the planet, the Museum’s new architecture reflects its mission. Through our partnership with DLR Group, our transformation aligns the exterior of our building with the exhibits within. It is architecture in service of our natural world.” (DLR Group LEED announcement)

How the exhibit strategy changed

From categories to systems

The redesigned exhibits move away from a sequence based primarily on time periods or scientific disciplines. Instead, the museum says they are organized around connected planetary and biological processes. A visitor may therefore encounter relationships among climate, geology, water, life and human activity rather than completing isolated stops labeled “geology,” “biology” or “paleontology.”

This is a change in explanatory structure, not merely a rearrangement of cases. Discipline-based galleries are efficient for cataloging collections, but natural systems do not respect those boundaries. A process-based plan can show how one force affects another and why a regional observation belongs in a global story. The museum explicitly says the redesigned exhibits are intended to make those forces relevant to contemporary life (Visitor Hall announcement; opening announcement).

Contemporary relevance without abandoning natural history

Connecting exhibits to present-day life does not turn the museum into a general science center. The institution remains a natural-history museum; the difference is that its specimens and evidence are arranged to illuminate living systems and planetary change. That choice gives the new architecture and the new interpretation a common premise: both show nature as dynamic, connected and locally observable.

Timeline, partners and delivery

Date Milestone What it established
June 24, 2021 Groundbreaking Construction began on the $150 million expansion, according to DLR Group’s announcement dated June 30, 2021 (source).
October 13, 2023 Visitor Hall announcement The museum presented the new hall as a project milestone and identified Panzica Construction and Gallagher & Associates as key delivery partners (source).
December 5, 2024 LEED announcement DLR Group announced LEED v4 BD+C New Construction Platinum certification for the transformed museum (source).
December 13, 2024 Grand opening The museum invited the public to explore the reimagined exhibits and announced the completed transformation (source).
December 2024 Construction completion Architectural Record reports that the multiphase, 375,000-square-foot project wrapped construction that month (source).

The partner list clarifies how many kinds of work had to be coordinated. DLR Group shaped the architectural transformation; Panzica Construction was identified for realizing the Visitor Hall; and Gallagher & Associates worked with museum teams on exhibit design. The museum’s own staff remained part of the interpretive process, which is important in a project where building circulation and scientific storytelling were developed together.

How to read the project’s size and cost figures

The $150 million figure

$150 million is the reported cost of the expansion announced in 2021 and reiterated in completion-era communications. It should be read as the project’s reported expansion cost, not as a price-per-square-foot calculation or a universal measure of every design, exhibit and operating expense. Neither the museum nor DLR Group supplies a separate construction-cost breakdown in the cited announcements.

Why 182,000 and 375,000 square feet both appear

DLR Group’s project page lists 182,000 square feet. Its December 2024 certification announcement says an existing 217,250-square-foot facility was reimagined to more than 375,000 square feet, and Architectural Record also reports a 375,000-square-foot project. Because the sources use different descriptions and reporting contexts, the 182,000-square-foot entry may refer to a defined portion of the work rather than the entire completed campus. The defensible statement is to report each figure with its source and avoid claiming that the project added exactly the difference between them (project page; certification announcement; Architectural Record).

What the acreage does and does not mean

“More than two acres” describes outdoor visitor areas in DLR Group’s account. It does not establish the total site area, the size of planting beds, or the proportion open at any particular season. Those distinctions matter when comparing museum landscapes, so the acreage should remain tied to the phrase “outdoor visitor areas.”

What the LEED Platinum certification signifies

The completed museum earned LEED v4 BD+C New Construction Platinum certification. The museum and DLR Group describe it as the first U.S. museum to earn that certification. That wording is narrower than calling it the first museum anywhere, and it preserves the geographic and rating-version limits stated by the project sources (DLR Group announcement; museum announcement).

Platinum is the highest level in the LEED rating system, while “v4 BD+C New Construction” identifies the applicable version and project category. The sources do not publish energy-use reductions, carbon savings, water-use data or post-occupancy measurements. Certification therefore documents the design and construction standard achieved; it should not be converted into an invented percentage of operational improvement.

Why this transformation matters as museum architecture

The project’s significance lies in alignment. The campus organization, the exhibit narrative and the exterior language all address connection: old and new buildings are joined; indoor galleries open toward outdoor areas; exhibits link planetary and biological processes; and the façade evokes the forces that shaped the region. Treating those moves as one strategy is more informative than describing the work as a large addition with attractive curves.

It also offers a practical model for institutions that have grown in stages. A museum does not necessarily need to erase its earlier buildings to become coherent. By establishing a new arrival, clarifying circulation and giving the whole campus a shared environmental story, DLR Group and the museum made accumulated construction legible as a single public experience. The Cleveland project demonstrates that expansion can be interpretive work: the building itself explains why the collections belong together.

Bottom line

DLR Group overhauled the Cleveland Museum of Natural History by coordinating renovation, expansion, landscape and exhibit planning into one completed transformation. The $150 million project broke ground in 2021 and opened in December 2024 with a new Visitor Hall, more than two acres of outdoor visitor areas, process-based exhibits and a glacially and water-inspired architectural language. Its reported area varies by source and scope, but the consistent outcome is a museum campus that presents Northeast Ohio’s natural systems as connected rather than compartmentalized.
