Yes—but as a primer, not a complete outdoor-metal finish. Dulux Quit Rust All Metal Primer is identified in the available technical material as the preparation coat in a larger system. For bare steel, a historical Dulux specification calls for one coat of Quit Rust All Metal Primer followed by two topcoats of Weathershield Matt Acrylic. The metal still has to be cleaned, old coating must be sound, and rust must be removed before priming.
That evidence does not verify today’s Australian formulation, packaging, stock status or label directions. Treat the documented sequence as historical system guidance, then follow the instructions on the current can and technical sheet sold in your region.

What Quit Rust does in an outdoor metal system
Quit Rust All Metal Primer belongs between prepared metal and the decorative weather-resistant paint. Its job is to provide a suitable bonding and corrosion-resistance layer so the finish coat is not applied directly to vulnerable steel or another difficult substrate. It is therefore different from a stand-alone exterior topcoat: primer alone is not the documented final appearance or weathering system.
The retrieved sources identify the product as a primer used with metal coating systems. A 2015 architectural specification placed it beneath Aquanamel Gloss on several metal categories, while a separate New Zealand catalogue describes a water-based product for new or weathered common metals and makes adhesion and corrosion-resistance claims. Those descriptions show how the product has been specified; they are not independent test results and do not replace the current local label.

The clearest documented system: bare steel
The strongest process evidence is a Dulux Weathershield Matt technical sheet, version 6.0, approved 13 January 2012 UTC. For bare steel, it states:
“On bare steel apply one coat of Dulux Quit Rust All Metal Primer followed by 2 topcoats of Dulux Weathershield Matt Acrylic.”
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
That is a specific primer-and-topcoat system, not a universal instruction for every metal object or every current product version. The sheet is old, and the retrieved material does not establish that the same formulation, number of coats or topcoat remains the current Australian recommendation. Before painting, compare the product names and directions on your current cans with the system you intend to use.
What the historical sequence means in practice
- Prepare the bare steel. Remove rust, dirt, dust, grease, loose coating and flaking paint. The surface must be clean before primer is applied.
- Apply one primer coat. The historical sheet specifies one coat of Dulux Quit Rust All Metal Primer on bare steel.
- Apply two compatible topcoats. The named finish in that sheet is Dulux Weathershield Matt Acrylic, applied as two topcoats.
- Allow the current label to control timing and conditions. The retrieved evidence does not provide a current drying time, recoat interval, spread rate or weather limitation, so do not substitute figures from memory.
Preparation determines whether the paint lasts
Primer cannot stabilize rust scale, grease or a peeling layer underneath it. The historical Weathershield sheet requires a surface that is thoroughly clean and free of dirt, dust, grease, loose or flaking paint. It also says to check adhesion of existing paint with an X-cut and tape method. These are preparation requirements from that older sheet, so confirm the exact method and any newer restrictions on the current coating label.

Remove active rust before priming
A New Zealand Roof & Trim product listing says steel and wrought iron should have all rust removed before applying Quit Rust Metal Primer. Because that listing is New Zealand information rather than a verified current Australian label, use it as supporting context, not as a substitute for local directions. In practical terms, remove loose rust and corrosion products until the remaining surface is firm, then remove the resulting dust and residue.
Check an existing painted surface
If the metal is already painted, do not assume the old film is a suitable foundation. Look for lifting edges, blisters, chalking, cracks and areas that move when scraped. The historical sheet’s X-cut-and-tape adhesion check is designed to reveal whether the existing coating is attached well enough to remain. Any unsound material should be removed, followed by cleaning of the exposed substrate.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not hide contamination under primer
Oil, grease and airborne dirt can prevent adhesion even when the metal looks visually clean. The older sheet specifically names grease, dust and dirt as contaminants to remove. Use the cleaning method required by the current label, let the surface become suitable for coating, and avoid touching prepared metal with dirty hands or tools.
Bare, galvanised and non-ferrous metals are not the same job
“Outdoor metal” covers substrates with different surface chemistry and previous coatings. A process that is documented for bare steel should not automatically be transferred to zinc-coated steel, aluminium, brass, copper or tin plate.

| Substrate | Evidence involving Quit Rust | Preparation decision | Topcoat evidence | Current-label status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bare steel | Historical Dulux Weathershield Matt sheet specifies one coat of Quit Rust All Metal Primer. | Remove rust and contaminants; ensure any retained coating is sound. | Two topcoats of Weathershield Matt Acrylic in that historical system. | Historical directions; verify current Australian instructions. |
| Zinc-coated or galvanised metal | A 2015 architectural specification lists Quit Rust in a low-VOC system for zinc-coated metal. | Use the current label’s preparation method for zinc; do not copy bare-steel assumptions. | Aquanamel Gloss is listed in that dated specification. | Dated specification, not proof of a current interchangeable system. |
| Shop-primed or red-oxide-primed ferrous metal | The same 2015 specification includes these categories. | Test adhesion and condition of the existing primer; remove unsound areas. | Aquanamel Gloss is listed in the specification. | Dated project evidence only. |
| Aluminium, brass, copper or tin plate | The 2015 specification lists these non-ferrous metals in a Quit Rust system. | Follow substrate-specific cleaning and adhesion directions on the current product label. | Aquanamel Gloss is listed in the specification. | Do not treat the specification as current manufacturer packaging guidance. |
The table shows that the named primer has appeared in specifications for several substrates. It does not show that one preparation routine, coat count or topcoat is suitable for all of them. Galvanised steel may retain zinc coatings that require a different cleaning or adhesion approach; aluminium and copper also present different surfaces from bare ferrous steel. Confirm compatibility before starting rather than relying on the product name alone.
How to choose the compatible topcoat
The topcoat supplies the visible colour and the exterior weathering layer. In the historical bare-steel example, that topcoat is Weathershield Matt Acrylic. In the 2015 project specification, Aquanamel Gloss is the listed finish for the zinc-coated, shop-primed ferrous and non-ferrous systems. Those are separate documented systems, not evidence that either finish can be swapped freely into the other.
Check four items on the current labels:
- Whether the primer is approved for your exact substrate and existing coating.
- Whether the topcoat is listed as compatible with that primer.
- Whether the system is water-based, solvent-based or requires a specified transition coat.
- How many primer and finish coats, and what recoat conditions, the current manufacturer instructions require.
Do not infer a coverage rate, drying time, service life or corrosion-performance number from the historical material; none of those figures is established here.
Water-based information and what it does—and does not—prove
ProductSpec NZ describes Quit Rust All Metal Primer as water-based and intended for new or weathered common metal surfaces, with adhesion and corrosion-resistance claims. That is catalogue information from New Zealand, not verified current Australian packaging. It can help explain why the product is presented as a general metal primer, but it is not proof of the current Australian formulation, performance testing or availability.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision path before opening the can
- Identify the substrate. Decide whether you have bare steel, weathered painted steel, galvanised or zinc-coated metal, shop-primed ferrous metal, aluminium, brass, copper or tin plate.
- Identify the existing film. If paint or factory primer remains, inspect it for peeling, chalking, rust breakthrough and poor adhesion.
- Read the current local label. Confirm that the exact Quit Rust product is intended for the substrate and location. The retrieved evidence does not verify current Australian stock or pack directions.
- Prepare mechanically and cleanly. Remove rust and loose material, remove grease and dust, and complete any adhesion check required by the current instructions.
- Confirm the system. Match the named topcoat, coat count and recoat conditions to the current primer and finish documentation.
- Test an inconspicuous area when compatibility is uncertain. A small trial can reveal adhesion or appearance problems before the whole structure is coated; it does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using primer as the final exterior paint
Symptom: The surface is left in a primer finish with no documented weathering topcoat. Correction: Use the compatible exterior topcoat specified for the current system. In the historical bare-steel example, the primer is followed by two Weathershield Matt Acrylic topcoats.
Painting over flaky rust or loose paint
Symptom: The new coating lifts because the weak layer remains underneath. Correction: Remove loose corrosion and unsound coating, then clean the substrate before priming.
Applying bare-steel instructions to galvanised metal
Symptom: Adhesion is poor on a zinc-coated surface even though the same number of coats was used. Correction: Stop treating the surface as bare steel. Use the current zinc-specific preparation and compatibility directions.

Mixing systems because the products have similar names
Symptom: A primer from one documented system is paired with a topcoat from another without confirmation. Correction: Check the current technical sheets or contact the manufacturer with the exact product names and substrate.
Assuming New Zealand catalogue information is an Australian label
Symptom: A regional claim is used to justify a local application, finish or availability statement. Correction: Treat the New Zealand catalogue as contextual information and follow the current Australian packaging and technical documentation.

The available evidence establishes that Quit Rust All Metal Primer has been used as part of outdoor metal coating systems, including a historical bare-steel sequence with one primer coat and two Weathershield Matt Acrylic topcoats. It also establishes that a 2015 specification placed the primer in systems for zinc-coated, shop-primed ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
It does not establish the current Australian formulation, current pack sizes, retailer stock, precise directions for every Quit Rust variant, current coat counts, drying times, coverage, lifespan or quantified corrosion performance. Those details can change by product revision and region. Check the can and current technical documentation before purchasing or applying the paint.
Bottom line for outdoor metal
Dulux Quit Rust is a sensible choice only when it is used as the primer in a compatible, substrate-specific system. For bare steel, the clearest documented route is preparation, one coat of Quit Rust All Metal Primer and two compatible exterior topcoats, as described in the historical Weathershield Matt sheet. Galvanised, shop-primed and non-ferrous metals need their own preparation checks. Remove rust and failing paint first, verify the current local instructions, and never assume that primer alone is the finished outdoor coating.
