How Ellen Van Dusen and Her Siblings Turned a Hand-Built Sullivan County Cabin Into a Pattern-Filled Retreat

Ellen Van Dusen and her brothers turned a structurally neglected Sullivan County cabin into a colorful family retreat through careful repairs, hand-painted motifs, computer-generated tile, and materials rooted in local history.

A decades-old cabin in Sullivan County, New York, became a highly personal family retreat after designer Ellen Van Dusen, her brothers Dave and Henry, and their parents repaired its structure and layered it with painted patterns, found materials, and furniture connected to the property’s history. The project is as much a lesson in collaborative renovation and paint technique as it is a home tour.

A cabin with history—and serious repair work

The house sits in Sullivan County, New York, in New York’s Catskills region. Postwar artist and textile designer Anthony Ballatore hand-built it over decades. His nature-inspired fabrics for Jack Lenor Larsen are held in the Cooper Hewitt collection, so the building already carried a strong connection to pattern and landscape before the Van Dusen family arrived.

Ellen first encountered the property through her brothers, who had rented from her in Brooklyn. When the siblings decided to buy a country house together, they say the choice was immediate. “We all immediately knew it was the one,” Ellen Van Dusen says.

The romantic description of a hand-hewn cabin should not obscure the practical condition they inherited. The kitchen had little infrastructure, the roof required replacement, and portions of the floor also needed to be replaced. One room had been built directly on dirt without a foundation. Those conditions made the project a structural renovation before it could become a decorating exercise.

Ellen’s father runs Van Dusen Architects, and her parents designed the kitchen cabinetry and built furniture for the house. The siblings had grown up doing renovation and do-it-yourself projects in Washington, DC, which gave the family a shared vocabulary for making, repairing, and revising a space. Their goal was not to erase the cabin’s rough origins but to make it dependable enough for frequent use while preserving its handmade spirit.

Why pattern became the organizing idea

The family treated paint, tile, textiles, and objects as parts of one visual language. Instead of choosing a single neutral backdrop and adding color only through accessories, they put pattern directly on walls and floors. Ellen describes the intention this way: “We wanted to bring the spirit of our childhood house into this one.”

That statement explains why the decoration feels collected rather than showroom-coordinated. Painted surfaces recall childhood projects; stones gathered from the property become cabinet hardware; a locally sourced tabletop and Hudson River bricks connect the interior to its region. New furnishings can therefore sit beside inherited or found elements without making the cabin feel like a period reconstruction.

Pattern also helps distinguish rooms in a house meant for several generations and overlapping activities. A strong motif can give a small room an identity without adding furniture, while textiles soften the hard surfaces needed in a heavily used country house. The result is exuberant, but the exuberance is distributed: leaves in one area, faux wood grain in another, and a geometric tile composition in the bathroom rather than one repeated print everywhere.

How the family used sponge painting

One of the most accessible techniques in the cabin is a sponge-painted leaf motif. The family applied the pattern themselves, making the walls part of the family story rather than commissioning every decorative finish. Architectural Digest’s October 2025 coverage also identifies the sponge-painted bedroom as a defining feature.

The published account does not specify the paint colors, sponge type, recipe, or number of coats used in the cabin. If you want to adapt the idea, treat the following as a controlled way to test the technique—not as a reconstruction of the family’s exact materials.

  1. Prepare the surface. Repair holes, remove dust and grease, and apply a sound base coat. A patchy wall will show through a translucent sponge layer.
  2. Choose a low-contrast pair. A base color and a motif color that are close in value produce a quiet, textile-like effect; a larger difference makes every leaf more graphic. Test both on the actual wall because lighting changes the relationship.
  3. Draw a repeat. Cut or sketch a simple leaf shape and decide how it will turn, overlap, and stop at corners. A repeat that is too regular can look stamped, while completely random placement can lose the sense of a pattern.
  4. Load the sponge lightly. Dab off excess paint before touching the wall. Several light impressions are easier to control than one saturated mark.
  5. Work in sections. Keep a wet edge for the background if you are adding a glaze, but let each motif set enough that it will not smear when adjacent leaves are added.
  6. Step back frequently. View the wall from the doorway and from the room’s normal seating position. Small marks that look delicate up close can become dense when repeated across a whole wall.
  7. Protect the finish where necessary. In a bedroom, a durable interior wall paint may be sufficient. Kitchens, mudrooms, and bathrooms need a finish rated for their moisture and cleaning demands.

The value of sponge painting is its tolerance for slight variation. Hand-applied leaves do not need to be perfectly identical; the variation is what keeps the surface from looking like a manufactured wallpaper panel. The technique is also repairable: a damaged section can be repainted and the motif extended over it, provided you keep a record of the colors and placement.

The faux-bois pattern adds a different kind of handmade illusion

In another area, the siblings hand-painted a faux-bois, or false-wood, pattern. Faux bois imitates grain, knots, and the directional movement of timber without requiring actual wood boards. In this cabin, it reinforces the building’s rustic identity while making the decorative intervention unmistakably contemporary.

For a practical version, begin with a smooth, opaque base coat. Once it is dry, use a narrower brush, comb, or graining tool to pull darker lines through a still-workable glaze. Vary the pressure and spacing; real grain is not a set of parallel stripes. Keep the pattern aligned with the architectural surface—vertical on a door, for example, or following the length of a panel—so the illusion supports the room’s proportions.

Do not confuse the cabin’s hand-painted treatment with a claim that its walls are wood or that a particular commercial graining kit was used. The feature names no product list. The important design decision is the contrast between a familiar rustic reference and the evidence of a person’s hand.

A computer-generated idea became bathroom tile

Henry Van Dusen, a computer programmer, made a website that generated the Tetris-like layout used for the bathroom tile motif. This is a notable counterpoint to the hand-painted walls: the family used code to create a geometric composition, then translated that logic into a physical surface.

The account does not publish the generator’s address, tile dimensions, color palette, or installation specifications. For anyone adapting the concept, the useful sequence is to generate or draw a modular grid first, then test the arrangement with paper or a scaled digital mock-up before ordering tile. Check that the pattern can accommodate corners, plumbing penetrations, niches, and grout joints. A layout that looks balanced as a rectangle may become awkward when a wall is interrupted by a door or fixture.

Tile also changes the maintenance calculation. Unlike a painted motif, it is not easily altered after installation, and the grout becomes part of the pattern. Confirm substrate preparation, waterproofing, and the tile’s suitability for the intended wet area with the installer. The Van Dusen project demonstrates the expressive potential of a generated pattern; it does not establish a universal installation method.

Repair and reuse came before decoration

The renovation’s order matters. A replacement roof protects every finish below it. Rebuilt floor sections and a proper foundation address safety and movement before cabinetry, paint, or tile are installed. The sparse kitchen likewise needed infrastructure, not simply a new color scheme.

  • Investigate structure and water first: roof, drainage, framing, floors, and the room built on dirt.
  • Plan utilities and work zones: the kitchen’s limited infrastructure had to be resolved before cabinetry and appliances could be finalized.
  • Make permanent surfaces sound: stabilize walls and floors before applying decorative paint or tile.
  • Only then compose the pattern: choose where a motif will survive wear, cleaning, and future repairs.

The family’s approach also shows why reuse can be more meaningful than buying a matching set. Stones collected on the property and from the local shop Crystal Connection became cabinet pulls. A dining tabletop was made from a local tree felled by lightning. Bricks dredged from the Hudson River appear at the fireplace, and doors from a 16th-century Spanish monastery add another layer of history. These are reported elements of this house, not a checklist that every cabin needs to copy.

Furniture and finishes mix contemporary pieces with local references

The interior combines Ellen’s Dusen Dusen textiles with contemporary furniture and the older materials. The feature names Dacor appliances, Decotone Surfaces laminate counters, vintage stools, HAY and Orior sofas, Kartell tables, a Travess Smalley rug, Fireclay tile, Bruno Rey chairs, and assorted lighting and decorative pieces. Their inclusion should be read as a reported inventory from the 2025 home tour, not as a current shopping list: prices, stock, dimensions, and product specifications were not verified.

Element Role in the cabin What is established
Dacor appliances Kitchen equipment Named in the feature; current models, pricing, and availability are not stated.
Decotone Surfaces laminate counters Kitchen work surfaces Reported as part of the kitchen; exact color and specification are not stated.
Dusen Dusen textiles Bedding and towels Ellen’s home-goods line; the feature identifies its textiles in the house.
HAY and Orior sofas; Kartell tables Seating and occasional furniture Named furnishings in the reported inventory; current stock is not stated.
Travess Smalley rug; Bruno Rey chairs Softness and dining/seating Identified in the home tour; prices and dimensions are not stated.
Fireclay tile Tile surfaces, including the patterned bathroom treatment Named in the feature; the exact tile series and installation details are not stated.

Because the cabin contains both bold pattern and irregular historic materials, visual consistency comes from repetition of ideas rather than identical products. Color and motif can recur in textiles, walls, and tile while wood, stone, brick, and metal retain their different textures.

A layout designed for togetherness and privacy

The siblings did not plan only for photographs or occasional holiday meals. Dave Van Dusen explains the acoustic and social goal: “We can play music at full volume in one room and not disturb people in another.” That comment points to a floor plan that supports simultaneous use—conversation, music, cooking, and retreat—without forcing everyone into one shared space.

For a similar renovation, map activities before choosing finishes. Put louder uses where doors, distance, or changes in floor construction can buffer them. Give bedrooms and reading areas a route that does not pass through the main gathering zone. Pattern can reinforce those distinctions: a more animated treatment can identify a social room, while a quieter repeat can make a sleeping space feel separate without abandoning the overall palette.

Landscape extends the interior’s connection to place

Ben Sigerson worked on the landscaping and planted native species, including a Franklin tree. He describes its bloom as follows: “It produces a big yellow and white flower that looks like a fried egg.” The planting is not an afterthought; it links the cabin’s nature-inspired visual language to the site outside the windows.

Native planting also has practical implications for a retreat that may not receive daily maintenance. Select species suited to the local soil, light, moisture, and winter conditions, and confirm availability with a regional nursery or extension service. The Franklin tree is a reported feature of this property, not a guarantee that it will thrive on every site.

What this cabin can teach a painter

The project offers several transferable principles without requiring a replica:

  • Use one high-effort motif at a time. A painted leaf wall, faux-bois surface, or geometric tile field can anchor a room; the remaining finishes can support it.
  • Let handwork remain visible. Slight variation gives a repeated mark character, but deliberate spacing and a test panel keep the result controlled.
  • Match technique to wear. Reserve delicate painted effects for walls that can be cleaned gently, and use tile or a tougher coating where water and abrasion are unavoidable.
  • Borrow from the site. Local stone, salvaged brick, or a fallen tree can provide texture and provenance that a new decorative object cannot reproduce.
  • Design for the household’s sound and movement. A successful retreat accommodates different activities at once, not just a single styled view.

The most distinctive feature of the Sullivan County cabin is not any single sofa, tile, or paint effect. It is the combination of serious repair, family labor, computational experimentation, and materials tied to the landscape. Ellen, Dave, and Henry Van Dusen made a retreat that acknowledges Ballatore’s handmade legacy while adding their own patterns and memories.

What the published account does not establish

The October 13, 2025 feature, listed in the November 2025 issue archive, does not provide a renovation budget, square footage, project timeline, paint brands or colors, tile dimensions, or a complete construction specification. Product prices and availability can change, and the named furnishings should not be treated as verified current purchasing options. Those limits do not diminish the design lesson: the cabin’s character comes from sequencing structural work, choosing patterns with intention, and making room for family participation.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
