How Erlöserkirche Unites Church, Day Care and Housing in Cologne

Completed in 2022, Erlöserkirche unites worship, childcare and apartments on Cologne’s Weidenpesch site. Harris + Kurrle’s design places a sculpted church at the corner, wraps secular uses around it and uses shared circulation to connect daily life with congregational space.

Erlöserkirche (Redeemer Church) in Cologne is a deliberately hybrid building: a sanctuary, congregational rooms, a day-care center and rental apartments occupy one sculpted structure rather than a campus of separate buildings. Completed in January 2022 in the Weidenpesch district, it places the church at the southwest corner of the site and wraps the secular uses around it.

The project emerged from the merger of Protestant congregations in Mauenheim and Weidenpesch. Its architecture addresses a practical question—how can a church remain open to ordinary neighborhood life?—without claiming that a building alone can reverse religious decline. The project is documented in Mary Pepchinski’s Architectural Record feature published June 22, 2023.

What Erlöserkirche is

Erlöserkirche is the new home of the Evangelical church community Köln-Mauenheim-Weidenpesch. Harris + Kurrle Architekten won the architectural competition launched in 2014, after the two congregations agreed to replace their former parish buildings with a shared facility.

The Weidenpesch church dated from 1951 and had been built partly with wartime rubble. It was considered unsuitable for renovation. The Mauenheim property was leased for development, while the larger, more accessible Weidenpesch site became the location for the new church. The site faces Derfflingerstrasse in north-central Cologne.

Rather than treating worship, childcare and housing as unrelated commissions, the architects designed one compact building. The sanctuary and bell tower occupy the prominent southwest corner. Day-care rooms and apartments fill the north and east portions, making the church the visible anchor while the income-producing and community uses remain physically attached to it.

Why the congregations chose a hybrid program

The initial brief combined a sanctuary and congregational rooms with a day-care center and 13 market-rate rental apartments. Apartment income was intended to help finance construction, giving the congregation a way to support its worship space through an everyday urban use.

This arrangement also changes what a church can be during the week. A sanctuary may host services only at particular times, but apartments and childcare create continuous occupation. The design therefore had to accommodate different degrees of privacy, noise and access while keeping the programs legible as parts of one institution.

Cost pressure altered the original program. The planned parking garage was removed, one story was eliminated, and four of the 13 apartments were cut. The sanctuary ceiling was lowered as well. These changes did not turn the project into separate buildings; they required the same unified idea to be compressed.

How the building is organized on its site

Harris + Kurrle describe a “single, unified form” in which the different parts of the program are wrapped around the church. The resulting mass is a compact, sculpted cube with a carved-out center. That void creates a public route linking Derfflingerstrasse with a narrower street on the west side.

The church and bell tower sit at the southwest corner, where they are easiest to see from the principal street. The five-story residential section faces a rear garden below grade, while the day-care and other communal functions occupy the north and east sides. This orientation lets the building present a civic face to the street and a more protected setting to residents and children.

Circulation is shared rather than split into completely independent addresses. Congregants, tenants and day-care users encounter one another in ordinary movement through the building, while the sanctuary remains identifiable as the spiritual center. The arrangement is a spatial strategy, not evidence that every user shares every room or activity.

Clinker brick gives the concrete structure a tactile identity

The reinforced-concrete building is clad in sand-toned clinker brick. At entrances, the masonry receives textured basket-weave treatments that make the points of arrival readable by touch and shadow as well as by outline. The brick keeps the large volume visually calm while giving close-up views a dense, hand-scaled texture.

Religious references are understated. A bas-relief cross appears on the west facade, and loaves-and-fishes motifs are worked into the south elevation. These signs do not turn the building into a literal icon; they provide small clues within an otherwise contemporary facade.

Window placement distinguishes the programs. The sanctuary, bell tower and principal circulation areas have windowless elevations, creating a sense of enclosure and giving the church a solid presence at the corner. Vertical windows mark the other functions, allowing the daycare and apartments to read as inhabited parts of the same composition.

Inside the sanctuary: acoustics, daylight and inherited glass

The sanctuary measures 40 feet wide by 45 feet long and rises to 18 feet at its highest point. Inclined wall and ceiling planes were positioned to distribute speech from the central altar, so the room’s geometry supports a service in which spoken words must reach the congregation without relying solely on amplification.

A ceiling light shaft draws attention toward a cross. The controlled top light makes the vertical symbol a focal point without filling the room with uniform brightness. On the south wall, a stained-glass window by Gabriele Wilperts projects colored patterns across the angled surfaces; the changing patches of color become part of the room’s atmosphere rather than a picture viewed only head-on.

Stained-glass panels from a predecessor church were reused in the vestibule and foyer. Their placement connects the new building to the congregations’ earlier places of worship while keeping the main sanctuary’s interior focused on its new geometry.

What the budget changes reveal

The revisions show which parts of the brief were most vulnerable when costs rose. A parking garage disappeared first, reducing the amount of infrastructure that would have been hidden from the street. The building also lost one floor and four apartments, shrinking the revenue-producing component from the originally planned 13 units. Lowering the sanctuary ceiling reduced volume in the most symbolically important room.

Those compromises matter because the project was conceived as a financial as well as architectural hybrid. Apartments were not an afterthought; they were intended to help pay for the church. Removing units potentially reduces that support, while the retained daycare and housing still keep the building active beyond worship hours. The published $12.7 million figure should be read as the amount reported for the completed project, not as a current construction estimate or a cost independently recalculated for another currency.

How the building is used in everyday life

The Architectural Record feature describes shared circulation and routine contact among day-care children, tenants and congregants. Local people reportedly look inside, ask for tours and show curiosity about a church that exposes more of its life to the neighborhood than a closed parish compound would.

Pastor Susanne Zimmermann describes the intended character as “surrounded by life.” She also says, “This church hasn’t changed only the streetscape. Its radiance has changed people too.” Those statements express a pastoral perception, not a measured social-impact result.

Sunday evening open devotional sessions extend the building’s use beyond a conventional service. According to the feature, participants may discuss, meditate or simply experience the space. The format allows people with different levels of religious commitment to enter without prescribing one mode of participation.

Can architecture address declining religious participation?

The project is introduced through the question of whether new architecture can offset dwindling participation in organized religion and foster spirituality in everyday life. That is a framing question, not a statistic established by the project report. No named study in the feature measures attendance, conversion, neighborhood cohesion or other social outcomes at Erlöserkirche.

What the building can demonstrate is more specific: it can place religious space in daily proximity to childcare, housing and public movement. A passerby can see signs of occupation; a tenant can share an entrance sequence with congregants; a child-care schedule can keep the address active on weekdays. These conditions may make contact easier, but they do not prove that participation has increased.

Design lessons from Erlöserkirche

Make the sacred room the anchor, not an isolated annex

Locating the church at the southwest corner gives the sanctuary and bell tower civic visibility. The secular uses support the building’s scale and economics without concealing what the address is.

Use circulation to create contact without erasing boundaries

Shared routes allow ordinary encounters, while the differentiated window patterns and the sanctuary’s enclosed elevations preserve distinct atmospheres. A hybrid building works through calibrated overlap rather than total mixing.

Let material carry identity at more than one distance

The sand-toned clinker reads as a unified skin from across the street. Basket-weave passages, relief motifs and reused stained glass reward closer attention, giving visitors physical and historical cues without depending on a monumental sign.

Design the room for its central act

In the sanctuary, inclined planes, a focused light shaft and colored reflections all reinforce worship around the altar and cross. The room is not merely an empty multipurpose hall; its geometry is tuned to speech, attention and changing daylight.

Plan for financial revision while protecting the concept

The removed garage, lost story, fewer apartments and lowered ceiling show that a strong organizing idea can survive reductions, but every cut changes performance or revenue. A project team should identify which spatial and income components are structurally essential before construction budgets tighten.

Why Erlöserkirche matters as a Cologne case study

Erlöserkirche does not offer a universal formula for church renewal. It is a particular response to two congregations, one accessible urban site and a brief that linked worship to childcare and housing. Its importance lies in making those relationships architectural: one form, one address, shared movement and a church placed where the neighborhood can see it.

The project also records the limits of that ambition. Market-rate apartments were reduced, a parking structure and floor were removed, and the sanctuary became lower than first planned. The completed building is therefore both an ideal of integration and a document of negotiation.

For readers looking for a hybrid church building in Cologne, Erlöserkirche is best understood as an experiment in adjacency rather than a proven social program. Its brick cube, carved public passage, carefully tuned sanctuary and mixture of users show how architecture can create opportunities for contact. Whether those opportunities produce lasting religious or social change remains an open question beyond the evidence reported for the project.
