EXAIR’s No Drip spray nozzles use the compressed-air supply as the shutoff signal. According to EXAIR, closing the air supply causes an internal seal to stop liquid flow, so liquid is not left feeding the nozzle after atomizing air is turned off. The product family then branches into internal-mix and external-mix designs, with different viscosity guidance, spray patterns, flow options, fittings and pressure arrangements. Choosing correctly means matching the nozzle to the liquid, coverage area, atomization goal and available air and liquid supplies—not simply choosing the smallest fitting.

How do EXAIR dripless spray nozzles stop liquid flow?

In a conventional atomizing arrangement, liquid can continue moving toward the orifice after air is closed. That residual feed can produce drops at the tip or allow liquid to drain while the process is paused. EXAIR describes its No Drip feature as a positive liquid shutoff connected to the compressed-air supply. When air is shut off, the nozzle seals the liquid passage.

EXAIR’s catalog states: “When the compressed air supply is shut off, the no drip nozzle positively seals off the flow of liquid eliminating the cause of drips.” This is the manufacturer’s operating description, not an independently measured test result. The official product pages use the same basic explanation: the nozzle stops liquid flow when compressed air is shut off. Neither the cited pages nor the catalog establishes a universal zero-drip result for every liquid, pressure, temperature or installation.

The practical sequence is therefore different from merely closing a liquid valve downstream:

  1. Air supplied: compressed air is available to atomize the liquid and operate the nozzle’s shutoff mechanism.
  2. Spraying: liquid and air are delivered through the selected mixing arrangement and discharged in the specified pattern.
  3. Air removed: the internal shutoff engages and blocks the liquid path, according to EXAIR’s description.

That linkage makes the air command a single process event: removing atomizing air also commands the liquid shutoff. It does not, by itself, tell you how fast a particular system depressurizes, whether liquid remains downstream of the seal, or how the nozzle behaves with a fluid outside the manufacturer’s stated range. Those details must be checked against the selected model and the process plumbing.

Internal-mix versus external-mix atomizing nozzles

The key design distinction is where the two streams meet. Internal-mix models combine air and liquid inside the nozzle. External-mix models bring the streams together outside the nozzle. EXAIR uses that distinction to describe different viscosity capabilities and adjustment methods.

Characteristic Internal-mix No Drip External-mix No Drip
Where streams mix Inside the nozzle Outside the nozzle
EXAIR viscosity guidance Liquids up to 300 cP Liquids above 300 cP
Feed arrangement Pressurized liquid and pressurized air are required Both air and liquid sides are pressure-fed
Adjustment Use the specified model’s flow and pattern options Air and liquid can be adjusted independently
Typical emphasis in EXAIR descriptions Fine mist, dust control, lubrication and protective coatings before packing Pattern and volume flexibility, including localized, narrow-band and wide-area application

The 300 cP dividing line is EXAIR’s product-family guidance, not a universal engineering rule for every atomizing nozzle. Viscosity changes with temperature and formulation, and a fluid’s solids content, surface tension and chemical compatibility can affect performance. Treat the value as a selection boundary for these EXAIR families and confirm the actual fluid conditions with the manufacturer.

When an internal-mix model makes sense

An internal-mix nozzle is the straightforward choice when the liquid is within EXAIR’s stated limit of up to 300 cP and the installation can provide pressure on both feeds. EXAIR describes these models as producing fine atomization by combining the streams in the body of the nozzle. The internal-mix family includes multiple patterns and flow options, so the viscosity check is only the first filter.

For a painting line, an internal-mix configuration can be considered where a fine mist is useful for coating or dust-control work and where the liquid supply is already pressure-fed. For lubrication or a protective coating applied before packing, the same family page identifies those uses, but the correct material, flow and pattern still depend on the process.

When an external-mix model makes sense

External-mix nozzles are the option EXAIR describes for liquids above 300 cP and for installations where independent air and liquid adjustment is valuable. Because the streams meet outside the nozzle, an operator can tune the two supplies separately rather than treating atomization and liquid delivery as one fixed blend.

This arrangement is useful when a coating’s viscosity or required liquid volume changes during a job, but the pressure-fed requirement remains. Independent adjustment does not remove the need to verify the model’s pressure range, connection size and compatible materials.

Which no-drip spray nozzle pattern should you choose?

Pattern selection should start with the shape and distance of the target, then move to liquid volume and the desired coating weight. EXAIR describes three broad pattern choices for its external-mix family:

Pattern EXAIR’s described use Choose it when
Round Higher liquid volumes on a localized or irregular area The target is a spot, contour or uneven surface rather than a straight band
Narrow-angle flat fan Heavier coating over a narrow band The work area is a confined strip and you want concentrated coverage
Wide-angle flat fan Higher volume over a wider area, such as a conveyor line The target spans a broad, moving width and overlap must be limited

Internal-mix models also have several pattern and flow choices, including fine-mist applications. Do not infer that a pattern name alone specifies a spray angle, droplet-size distribution or flow rate; those values belong to the individual model documentation.

How to select an EXAIR No Drip nozzle step by step

  1. Identify the liquid at operating conditions. Record viscosity in centipoise at the temperature at which it will be sprayed, along with solids, additives and any corrosive components. Use EXAIR’s up-to-300 cP guidance for internal-mix models and above-300 cP guidance for external-mix models as a starting point, not as a substitute for a compatibility review.
  2. Decide whether the process needs internal or external mixing. Choose internal mixing when the fluid falls within the stated range and a fixed, fine-atomizing arrangement suits the job. Consider external mixing when the fluid is more viscous or when separate air and liquid adjustment will help operators control the process.
  3. Map the target area. Measure the width, length and shape of the surface. A round pattern is aimed at localized or irregular areas; a narrow fan concentrates material on a band; a wide fan spreads volume across a larger width such as a conveyor.
  4. Set the liquid-flow objective. Define the required application rate, coating weight or wetting level before comparing models. The EXAIR families include different flow rates, so selecting by pattern alone can produce too much or too little liquid.
  5. Check both supply systems. Confirm that the plant can deliver the required air pressure and liquid pressure at the nozzle while other equipment is operating. Internal-mix models require pressure on both feeds; EXAIR describes external-mix models as pressure-fed on both sides as well.
  6. Match the connection. Verify thread type, nominal size and gender against the plumbing and manifold. EXAIR lists multiple connection sizes. A model that has the desired pattern is not a drop-in replacement if its fitting does not match the existing line.
  7. Verify materials and chemistry. The cited EXAIR families use stainless-steel construction; the internal-mix page specifies Type 303 for its cited construction. The sources do not establish chemical compatibility for every paint, solvent, rinse or additive, so obtain confirmation for the actual process fluid before installation.
  8. Confirm the exact model documentation. Check the current product page for the model’s pressure, flow, pattern, connection and material data. EXAIR’s catalog gives a minimum operating air pressure of 30 PSIG (2.1 bar) for 1/4- and 1/2-NPT nozzles, but that catalog is older than the current product pages. Treat 30 PSIG as a catalog specification to verify, not a universal requirement for every size or model.
  9. Plan the shutoff command. Because the No Drip action is tied to compressed air, decide which valve or control signal will remove air at the end of a spray cycle. Make sure operators understand that changing the air command also changes the liquid-shutoff state.

Connections, pressure and installation checks

EXAIR offers several connection sizes and flow configurations, so the fitting on the nozzle should be treated as a specification rather than an assumption. The catalog’s 30 PSIG (2.1 bar) minimum applies in its wording to 1/4 and 1/2 NPT nozzles. It does not establish a minimum for every other size, and it does not prove that a supply will maintain that pressure at the nozzle under flow.

  • Read the selected model’s current air-pressure and liquid-pressure requirements.
  • Check whether pressure is measured at the regulator, at the manifold or at the nozzle inlet; pressure losses in tubing can make those readings different.
  • Use the specified thread and sealing method for the model, and avoid forcing a mismatched fitting.
  • Confirm that the liquid line, air line and control valve are rated for the process pressure and fluid.
  • After installation, verify that the selected pattern reaches the target without striking guards, nearby equipment or unintended surfaces.

These checks are especially important when replacing a nozzle on an existing line. A nozzle with the same nominal connection can still have a different flow demand or pressure requirement.

Applications EXAIR identifies for the family

EXAIR lists painting, coating, rinsing, cooling, quenching, wetting, humidification and dust control among the applications for its No Drip atomizing nozzles. The internal-mix page additionally identifies lubrication and applying protective coatings before packing. Those examples describe intended use categories, not a guarantee that one model will suit every formulation or production speed.

For painting and coating, pattern width and liquid flow determine how many passes or how much overlap an operator needs. For rinsing, cooling, quenching or wetting, the important question may be delivered volume rather than the finest mist. Humidification and dust control can favor fine atomization, but room airflow, exhaust and safety controls remain separate system-design issues.

Concrete model example: AN2040SS

EXAIR lists model AN2040SS as a “1/4 FNPT No Drip Int Mix Narrow Angle Round Atomizing Nozzle.” The name identifies several selection details at once: a 1/4-inch female NPT connection, internal mixing, a narrow-angle round pattern and the No Drip feature. The product page says the model stops liquid flow when compressed air is shut off.

AN2040SS is an example, not a default recommendation. Before specifying it, compare its flow and pressure requirements with the liquid viscosity, target size, available air and liquid supplies, material compatibility and the rest of the installation. Other EXAIR models may provide a different pattern, connection or flow rate that better fits the same process.

What the published evidence does—and does not—establish

The manufacturer’s pages and catalog establish the operating concept, product categories and selection distinctions described above. They do not provide an independent laboratory study showing a percentage reduction in waste, a quantified savings figure or a universal guarantee that no liquid can remain anywhere in a connected line after shutoff. Do not use an unverified savings percentage in a specification or business case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They also do not establish chemical compatibility for every paint, solvent, rinse or coating. Stainless-steel construction, including Type 303 on the cited internal-mix page, is useful information but not a complete compatibility decision. Ask EXAIR to review the actual fluid and operating conditions, and verify the current model documentation before committing the nozzle to production.
