At Fish River Station in Australia’s Northern Territory, a bespoke Crimsafe Ultimate Patio Enclosure turned a roof-and-floor shelter into a screened ranger accommodation building. The design was intended to keep the open-air character of the station while improving resistance to insects, wildlife and harsh weather; the available project accounts do not independently measure comfort, energy savings or indoor temperatures.
From an open shelter to usable ranger accommodation
Fish River Station is a remote property in the Northern Territory that serves as a meeting ground for local communities and employs First Nations Rangers from the Daly River area. Crimsafe Commercial describes it as approximately 3,500 kilometres from Adelaide and part of Australia’s national reserve system. Those details come from the manufacturer’s project account, rather than an independent distance survey. Crimsafe’s Fish River Station case study provides the project context.

The Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation (ILSC) sought to restore and upgrade the existing ranger accommodation. Its brief was not simply to replace the structure with a conventional enclosed building. The project aimed to improve living conditions while retaining original features where practical, and to keep the accommodation suitable for Rangers working on country.
Stan Bond’s project account says the existing building had a floor and roof but no walls. That arrangement supplied shade and shelter from rain, yet left the occupants exposed to insects, animals and the conditions of the outback. UniSA Design Construct brought Stan Bond into the process to develop an enclosure that could form walls without converting the building into a fully solid or glazed box.
The resulting solution used Crimsafe Ultimate Patio Enclosure screens around the whole building. The screen walls allowed the project to preserve the open structure’s visual and ventilated character while creating a defined accommodation envelope.

Why screening suited the Fish River brief
Airflow without leaving the building open
Both the manufacturer and installer describe airflow as a central benefit of the screen enclosure. A mesh wall can admit moving air where a solid wall would restrict it, which is particularly relevant in a hot, remote setting. In this project, airflow was a design objective rather than a published, measured result: no source reports indoor temperatures, air-change rates, thermal-comfort surveys or energy use at Fish River Station.

A barrier against insects and wildlife
Project descriptions also identify resistance to insects and other animals as a reason for the screen selection. Enclosing the perimeter with security mesh was intended to let Rangers occupy the building without leaving every opening exposed to mosquitoes, flies, snakes or other wildlife. The sources describe the intended protection and the product’s stated capabilities; they do not provide a species-by-species exclusion study or a long-term maintenance assessment for the station.
Some daytime privacy
Stan Bond says the screens provided a degree of daytime privacy. Mesh can interrupt direct views while remaining visually lighter than a solid wall, although privacy depends on lighting, viewing angle, distance and what is happening inside or outside the enclosure. The project material does not quantify an opacity level or claim privacy after dark, when interior lighting can make a screened space more visible from outside.
What was specified and how it was delivered
- Brief and site: ILSC identified the need to improve the existing ranger accommodation while preserving useful original features.
- Design development: UniSA Design Construct worked with Stan Bond to devise an enclosure for a building that originally had a roof and floor but no walls.
- Product specification: UniSA specified Crimsafe Ultimate Patio Enclosure screens, according to Crimsafe Commercial.
- Full perimeter enclosure: Stan Bond describes screens wrapping the entire building, with no solid walls or glazing around it.
- Fabrication: Crimsafe says the panels were fabricated to precise measurements for the remote installation.
- Transport and installation: The finished screens were transported to the site, and Crimsafe describes installation as a joint effort involving UniSA students and Fish River Rangers.
This sequence matters because the installation was not a standard retail patio upgrade. It required site-specific measurement, fabrication, transport planning and coordination with people who would use and maintain the accommodation. The sources do not publish panel dimensions, fixing schedules, installation duration, freight costs or a maintenance interval.

Crimsafe’s commercial case study lists performance figures for its screening products. They are manufacturer claims and must not be read as measurements taken from the Fish River building.

Crimsafe’s separate testing information reports a 4.2-tonne result in a balustrade-panel load test against a stated 1.4-tonne test requirement, and separately reports 62% UV filtering for Tensile-Tuff mesh. Those are company statements about the described products and tests, not evidence of the Fish River installation’s actual loads, UV exposure or service life. They are therefore not used as project outcomes here.
Fire and weather compliance needs a whole-building view
The 44 m/s debris figure is easy to misread. Crimsafe’s case-study wording ties the BAL FZ rating to use with a compliant window system. A screen panel cannot, by itself, certify an entire accommodation building for a bushfire attack level. Windows, doors, frames, roof elements, penetrations, fixings and the surrounding construction must also satisfy the applicable requirements.
For a remote project, the practical question is not only whether a mesh product has a published impact claim. Designers also need to confirm the relevant Australian standards, the site’s bushfire and wind exposure, the supporting structure, and how every opening is detailed. The Fish River sources do not publish a project certification package, engineering calculations or a statement that the completed building achieved a particular BAL classification.
Remote-site logistics were part of the design
Fish River’s location changes the risk profile of a screen installation. Components had to be made away from the site, checked against precise measurements and transported a long distance before the installation team arrived. A measurement error that might be corrected quickly in an urban project could require another freight movement and a new site visit in the outback.

Crimsafe’s account says fabrication and installation involved both UniSA students and Rangers. That shared effort is significant in a project intended to serve a local community: the people who would occupy the accommodation were involved in putting the enclosure in place. It also underlines why a bespoke commercial job should be planned around access, handling, tools, weather windows, storage and local skills rather than treated as a catalogue purchase.
Questions a similar project should settle before fabrication
- Have all openings, posts, roof lines and floor edges been measured and checked by the fabricator?
- How will panels and frames be packed, protected and lifted during transport?
- What road access, vehicle size, unloading area and secure storage are available at the site?
- Who will inspect the structure after freight and before fixing?
- Which local personnel will be involved in installation, future cleaning and repairs?
- How will insects, dust, salt, moisture and wildlife affect screens, tracks, seals and fasteners?
None of these project-management details is published for Fish River, but they are the practical consequences of the fabrication-and-transport approach described by Crimsafe and Stan Bond.

Stan Bond reports that the project won the National Security Screen Association’s 2019 Best Commercial Installation award. The AGWA Design Awards Magazine 2019 records Stan Bond SA as the national winner in the NSSA Best Installation—Commercial category and names the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation as the client.
The award supports the project’s recognition as a commercial installation; it does not establish measured thermal performance, a particular wind rating for the completed building or a guaranteed service life. Those questions require project records or independent testing that the published accounts do not supply.

This is a design comparison, not a product-versus-product test. The Fish River documentation does not provide comparative measurements against a conventional wall, glass enclosure or another screen system.
What the Fish River case establishes—and what remains unknown
Established by the project accounts
- The project is at Fish River Station in the Northern Territory and serves local communities, including First Nations Rangers from the Daly River area.

Keeping those boundaries clear prevents a successful architectural case study from being turned into an unsupported guarantee for every remote accommodation project.
Lessons for architects and project owners
- Start with the existing building: Retaining a roof and floor can preserve shade, character and embodied work, but the new enclosure must solve the exposure problems that made the original arrangement unsuitable.
- Specify the outcome, not only the material: Airflow, insect control, wildlife resistance, privacy and fire performance are different requirements. Each needs its own detail and acceptance criteria.
- Carry compliance through adjacent elements: A screen rating that depends on a compliant window system cannot be separated from the frames, openings and supporting structure around it.
- Design the freight plan early: Remote fabrication and delivery should influence panel sizes, packaging, lifting points, inspection and contingency planning before manufacture.
- Include the people who will use the building: The reported involvement of Rangers and UniSA students shows how installation can be connected to local participation rather than treated as a distant, one-way delivery.
- Separate claims from measurements: Manufacturer figures can inform specification, but site comfort, energy use, durability and wildlife exclusion need project-specific verification.
Fish River Station demonstrates how a custom screen enclosure can give an otherwise open outback structure walls while preserving its connection to the surrounding environment. Its strongest lesson is methodological: match the enclosure to the site and occupants, then verify the building-level performance instead of assuming that a product claim describes the finished project.
